Benefits And Uses Of Cbd For Ulcerative Colitis

What’s all the buzz about CBD oil? | Just The FAQs

One study mentioned that CBD may help prevent colitis by reducing the colonâs inflammatory response.

Results of a 2021 study suggested that cannabis products, particularly those containing CBD and tetrahydrocannabinol , may benefit patients with ulcerative colitis.

However, the study involved a limited number of patients, and there may be a need to conduct additional clinical trials for more conclusive results.

An animal study showed that administering CBD before inflammation occurs may prevent inflammation from happening. The same study mentioned that taking CBD after inflammation sets in may help reduce inflammation.

Another study, published in the British Journal of Pharmacology, determined the effects of CBD and THC on rats with colitis. Results showed that combining CBD and THC may help reduce inflammation in the subjects.

Although the study was conducted on animals, results may provide a helpful reference for future human studies on CBDâs potential to help manage ulcerative colitis.

Another study showed that CBD may interact with the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma receptors located outside the ECS.

The PPAR-gamma receptor is found in the colon and adipose tissues and helps regulate glucose metabolism and fatty acid storage.

Researchers may find interest in the interaction between CBD and the PPAR-gamma receptors to determine CBDâs potential as a remedy for inflammatory bowel diseases .

Interactions With Other Medications

If you take the anticoagulant warfarin , CBD may raise the level of the blood thinner circulating in your body. This increases the risk of bleeding complications.

CBD may increase the levels and activity of other medications, too. Be sure to talk with your doctor before taking CBD and other medications.

Unlike THC, which carries a long list of potential side effects, CBD appears relatively safe for most adults. Some possible side effects include:

Some common dietary changes include:

  • limiting certain fruits and vegetables, such as prunes, that can increase stool output
  • increasing food rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon, which can help reduce inflammation
  • reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption
  • eating several smaller meals throughout the day, rather than two or three large meals

To learn what foods may trigger your IBD flare-ups, keep a food diary to track what you eat and when you have digestive troubles.

Other lifestyle adjustments include regular exercise and not smoking.

Thc & Cbd May Alleviate Abdominal Pain & Cramping

THC is also a well-known muscle relaxant which can be used to stop the painful muscle contractions going on in the intestinal tract with IBD. This lowers abdominal cramping pain and improves motility in the digestive tract resulting in less bloating, constipation, cramping, and feelings of fullness .

CBDalso modulates the sensation of pain by stopping certain neurons from firing.

This occurs between secreted endocannabinoidsand their receptors. While endocannabinoids have been shown to indirectlyaffect opioid receptors, its important to remember that endocannabinoids workwithin their own systems and do not interfere with other pain regulatingsystems. This is why THC and CBD do not have the same addictive qualities asmorphine .

Thereâs lots of interest in medical marijuana and CBD to help manage a variety of conditions and symptoms such as pain, nausea, and trouble sleeping. If you or a loved one is struggling with ulcerative colitis and its symptoms, you might wonder if or CBD could help with those.

Itâs useful to understand the difference between marijuana and CBD. Marijuana comes from a plant that people sometimes use for recreational or medicinal purposes called Cannabis sativa. It contains two main active ingredients: THC and CBD .

Itâs the THC in marijuana that gives you a high. If you buy CBD products, they come from a cannabis cousin of marijuana called hemp. There shouldnât be much if any THC in your CBD. So CBD might make you feel tired or make your mouth feel dry, but you wonât get high from taking it.

How I Consume It Now

Iâve come a long way since my slew of questions during my very first dispensary trip.

In the past few years I have experimented with different types of products and I will say that the gummies and liquid tinctures are my favorite. Theyâre simply the easiest to track the dosage.

During a flare-up, I take 2.5 milligrams of 3:1 CBD:THC in the morning when I wake up and 5 mg of 1:1 CBD:THC at bedtime. When Iâm in remission and healthy I take 2.5 mg of 3:1 or 1:1 at bedtime.

I personally donât like the feeling of being high, so I either take a higher dose at bedtime so that I sleep well and donât really feel the high, or I take a very small amount in the morning at a ratio thatâs much higher in CBD than THC.

You can choose the ratio that best fits how you want to feel. For healing and pain management, the higher the CBD the better.

You still want THC present, though, so that the CBD will work most effectively. If youâre highly sensitive to any amount of THC or trying it for the first time, I suggest taking it in the evening before bed so you can function properly during the day.

But what will CBD do if you dont have this disease? Will it make your immune system weak in your colon allowing you to contract whatever disease comes through your digestive tract? In another rodent model study, they might have found the answer.

In this rodent study, they found that the mice that weren’t given experimental colitis didnt have the same reaction to CBD that those who had the disease. The mice that did have ulcerative colitis and were treated with CBD showed to have a reduction in certain proteins that came down to match the healthy subjects. Their mast cell levels were also reduced to match their healthy counterparts, and the study reaffirmed the possibility that CBD could be used as a preventative treatment.

Tissue Preparation For The In Vitro Studies And The Methods Employed For Measuring Motility

The most inflamed segment of the distal colon was cut longitudinally into four strips one of which was frozen and stored at 70°C for assessment of MPO activity and the remaining three strips were used in motility studies.

Longitudinal muscle strips were placed in 30 mL organ baths and maintained in oxygenated Krebs solution at 37°C. The tissue was suspended in the bathing solution by threads. One end of the tissue was attached to a hook at the bottom of the bath and the other end to an isometric tension transducer .

In experiments with electrical field stimulation , the tissue was attached to a hook between two parallel platinum wire electrodes. Electrical stimuli were delivered by a Harvard Apparatus 6002 stimulator .

An initial load of 1 g was applied. The tissues were left to equilibrate for at least 30 min before experiments were commenced. Wet and dry tissue weights were determined and amplitude of contraction was calculated per gram of dry weight. This normalization procedure was used because of the presence of oedema, as well as possible morphological changes of the smooth muscle layers in the inflamed colon as reported by Wells et al. .

The experiments were recorded with a MacLab data acquisition system .

Cbd Oil For Crohns Disease And Ulcerative Colitis

Its critical to pick a form of CBD that is most helpful for your condition if you decide to utilize it for ulcerative colitis or Crohns disease. CBD can be found in oil drops, capsules, edibles, vapes, and topical products each has its bioavailability, targets different ailments, and is intended for various modes of administration.

CBD oil is one of the most popular forms of CBD because it is nearly always well-tolerated, easy to take, and provides relief for a wide variety of symptoms and conditions. CBD oil can be taken orally using a sublingual CBD tincture placed under the tongue, or it can be added to food or drinks. In addition, CBD can be applied topically to the skin in the form of a lotion, oil, cream, or balm.

Capsules and edibles are also popular forms of CBD. Capsules are easy to take and provide relief for an extended period, while edibles offer a tasty way to consume CBD. However, it is essential to remember that edibles can take a long time to take effect , so they are not the best choice if you need immediate relief.

Vapes and topical products are less commonly used forms of CBD, but they can be very effective. Vaping CBD provides the fastest relief of any method, but it is not suitable for everyone. Topical products are best used to target specific body areas, such as inflamed joints or muscles.

C4 Healthlabs Review: CBD Oils That Achieve Results

The very first time I tried THC and CBD for my ulcerative colitis, I started with a tropical-flavored gummy. This can be one of the easiest ways to control the dosing, especially for newbies. And yes, they were as delicious as they sound.

I waited until 2 hours before bed. This way I was at home, in a controlled environment, and able to notice how the gummy made me feel.

The result? I felt very calm and never felt the high that I expected. Plus, I had the most amazing night of sleep!

Since I did feel super calm and relaxed, I knew that I needed to keep it as a nighttime ritual rather than during the day or at work, at least until I built up a better tolerance for it.

What The Research Tells Us

Two recent systematic reviewsone including patients with active Crohns and the other including patients with active ulcerative colitis looked at the effect of cannabis cigarettes and cannabis oil on outcomes such as disease remission or activity, inflammation, side effects, and quality of life.

When reported on, neither review found that cannabis cigarettes or cannabis oil induced remission in patients with active disease or helped with inflammation . In both Crohns and ulcerative colitis, cannabis cigarettes led to a reduction in disease activity , but in Crohns patients, this was accompanied by an increase in mild side effects such as memory loss, drowsiness, confusion, dizziness, and trouble concentrating . Cannabis oil produced potentially meaningful increases in quality of life in both types of IBD , but in patients with ulcerative colitis, this strategy was associated with mild to moderately severe side effects such as headache, tiredness, dizziness, nausea, and trouble concentrating .

So, what should patients and caregivers affected by Crohns and ulcerative colitis make of these findings?

If youre considering using cannabis or cannabis oil to treat your Crohns or ulcerative colitis, reach out to your health care provider to help you navigate the potential harms and benefits and factor in where the current evidence lies.
