What A Stomach Ulcer Feels Like

If you have a stomach ulcer, the most obvious and common symptom will be stomach pain. This pain can be either dull or burning and is often felt between the belly button and breastbone.

You can feel the pain from a stomach ulcer at any time, but it may be more obvious when your stomach is empty. You may also experience discomfort when you eat or drink, and that painful sensation can last for minutes or even hours.

Beyond pain, stomach ulcers can also cause other symptoms, including:

  • Bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Weight loss

In some cases, an ulcer can perforate or tear, a situation known as a bleeding ulcer. When this happens, you may also experience nausea, blood in your stool or dark stools, back pain, and blood in your vomit. A perforated ulcer, which occurs when the ulcer burns through the stomach wall, is considered an emergency and typically requires prompt surgical treatment.

Causes Of Stomach Ulcer

  • Stomach ulcers are caused by bacteria called helicobacter pylori. You can also get ulcer from too much intake of aspirin, ibuprofen and other non steroidal anti-inflammatory.
  • They are often treated by the use of antibiotics and other medications that help to reduce the production of stomach acids.
  • Usually, the stomach produces a thick mucus coat to control the effect of pepsin on the stomach lining. When this process is disturbed, the lining of the stomach becomes exposed to this acid and develops sores.
  • Food helps to flush out some of these acids, because it is used to breakdown the food into the bloodstream. However, upon digestion, these acids become active again.

Common Warning Signs Of Ulcers

What Causes Stomach Ulcers and How Carafate Treat Stomach Ulcers?

Ulcers are a common medical issue that affects about one in ten people in America. They occur when acid in the digestive tract eats away at the inner surface of the esophagus, stomach or small intestine. The acid can create a painful open sore that may bleed. You can get them anywhere on your body for any reason, but the most common form of ulcers occur in your stomach.

Although there is no single cause for an ulcer, many factors can increase your risk of stomach ulcers including painkillers, excessive drinking of alcohol and smoking tobacco. Luckily, ulcers are easy to treat once you recognize the symptoms of them. Here are five common signs of a stomach ulcer:

Abdominal Pain: A burning sensation may occur in your stomach. The pain will come and go in waves and is often accompanied by bloating. Many may confuse this feeling with acid reflux or other similar diseases. If the abdominal pain starts after you eat, keeps you up at night, and lasts a prolonged period it might be an ulcer.

Nausea: Due to the imbalance in your digestive system, mild to severe nausea may occur, either first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, or after eating. Because of nausea that will occur, rapid weight loss also comes in conjunction with it as well.

Bloating: A feeling of heaviness and fullness can occur in the stomach, usually the same feeling you get after drinking a full glass of water.

Jeffina

Hello everyone Im new to e group and found out yesterday during endoscopy that I have a small ulcer.

I am under investigation for symptoms of IBS and more recently this year Ive had several attacks that me and my GP were convinced were gallstones. I had a gallbladder ultrasound that was all clear but the pain continued so I ended up seeing a gastroenterologist about it. He though I may have coeliac disease but found the ulcer during the examination.

The he attacks I get are severely painful, to the point I can barely breathe or speak during them and I have a fairly high pain threshold so Im now confused if this is he true cause. I go back and see the doctor in a couple of weeks. Lanzoprazole in the meantime.

Thank you.

The most common stomach ulcer symptom is, not surprisingly, stomach paintypically, a dull, burning sensation in the mid-abdominal area. Because ulcers are literally sores in the lining of the stomach or small bowel, pain classically presents in relation to acid secretion in the intestines, says Rusha Modi, M.D., gastroenterologist and assistant professor of clinical medicine at Keck Medical Center in California. The pain usually peaks between meals and at night, when acid has been secreted into the stomach but theres no food to act as a buffer. Taking antacids can temporarily relieve the pain, but odds are it will keep coming back until the ulcer is treated by a professional.

Because the ulcer is being perpetually doused in acid, stomach pain can often be paired with chronic heartburn and regurgitation . Other symptoms, such as bloating, burping, or feeling perma-full, may not be far behind, says Ravella. If taking an OTC antacid only relieves symptoms temporarily, or they seem to strike no matter what you eat, you may want to discuss this with your physician.

Peptic ulcer disease – causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, pathology

Most stomach ulcers are caused by infection with H. pylori. Therefore, a main part of the treatment is to clear this infection. If this infection is not cleared, the ulcer is likely to return once you stop taking acid-suppressing medication. For more information, see the separate leaflet called Helicobacter Pylori.

What Happens After Treatment

A repeat gastroscopy is usually advised a few weeks after treatment has finished. This is mainly to check that the ulcer has healed. It is also to be doubly certain that the ‘ulcer’ was not due to stomach cancer. If your ulcer was caused by H. pylori then a test is advised to check that the H. pylori infection has gone. This is done at least four weeks after the course of combination therapy has finished.

How Is An Ulcer Diagnosed

Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms. They may do an endoscopy. This procedure involves inserting a thin, flexible tube attached to a camera down your throat and into your stomach. Your doctor will test your blood, breath or stool for H. pylori. They also can test a sample of your stomach lining. Your doctor also will ask you if you regularly take aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicines.

Signs You May Have A Peptic Ulcer

Peptic ulcers, or stomach ulcers, are breaks or holes in the lining of the stomach. An ulcer in the first part of the intestines is known as a duodenal ulcer. An ulcer in the stomach is known as a gastric ulcer. If you think you may have an ulcer, you should see a gastroenterologist. Gastroenterologists are specialists in the diagnosis and treatment of peptic ulcers. Here are 5 signs you may have a peptic ulcer. 1. Burning pain- The most common peptic ulcer symptom is a burning sensation or gnawing pain in the middle of your abdomen. The pain may come and go for several days or weeks. Even though discomfort may be mild, peptic ulcers can worsen if they arent treated. Taking antacids can relieve the discomfort, but it will keep coming back until the peptic ulcer is treated by a doctor.

2. Nausea- The symptoms of peptic ulcers may include nausea. Nausea is a feeling of sickness with an inclination to vomit. Nausea has many possible causes. Some common causes of nausea include appendicitis, infection, reactions to some medicines, migraines, food poisoning or intestinal blockage.

If Your Ulcer Was Caused By An Anti

Peptic Ulcer

If possible, you should stop taking the anti-inflammatory medicine. This allows the ulcer to heal. You will also normally be prescribed an acid-suppressing medicine for several weeks. This stops the stomach from making acid and allows the ulcer to heal. However, in many cases, the anti-inflammatory medicine is needed to ease symptoms of arthritis or other painful conditions, or aspirin is needed to protect against blood clots. In these situations, one option is to take an acid-suppressing medicine each day indefinitely. This reduces the amount of acid made by the stomach and greatly reduces the chance of an ulcer forming again.

What Are The Complications Of Peptic Ulcers

Ulcers can cause serious problems if you dont get treatment.

The most common problems include:

  • Bleeding. As an ulcer wears away the muscles of the stomach or duodenal wall, blood vessels may be hurt. This causes bleeding.
  • Hole . Sometimes an ulcer makes a hole in the wall of your stomach or duodenum. When this happens, bacteria and partly digested food can get in. This causes infection and redness or swelling .
  • Narrowing and blockage . Ulcers that are found where the duodenum joins the stomach can cause swelling and scarring. This can narrow or even block the opening to the duodenum. Food cant leave your stomach and go into your small intestine. This causes vomiting. You cant eat properly.

What Causes Stomach Ulcers & Am I At Risk

Youve probably watched a TV show before where an overly stressed character says, I think I have an ulcer. Ulcers are a fairly common type of gastrointestinal health condition, affecting nearly 4 million people each year in the United States. But what causes stomach ulcers?

Eric JacksononDecember 27, 2021

The first important thing to note is that not all ulcers are stomach ulcers. Ulcers can occur anywhere on or in the body and are open sores or raw areas. Ulcers affecting the GI system are whats known as peptic ulcers.

You can have two different types of peptic ulcerduodenal ulcer, which affects part of the small intestine, and gastric ulcer, which affects the lining of your stomach. Gastric ulcers are commonly referenced as stomach ulcers.

Signs And Symptoms Of Stomach Ulcers

Symptoms of stomach ulcers may be different for each person, and some people may not have any symptoms at all. Most people feel pain, but not every stomach ulcer causes stomach pain. The most common signs and symptoms of a stomach ulcer are:

Stomach pain

The first indication that you might have a gastric ulcer is a burning feeling in your abdomen. Typically, you can feel this pain somewhere between your breastbone and belly button.

Normally, gastric ulcers cause pain while food is still in the stomach, so while youre still eating or soon afterwards. If you experience pain when your stomach is empty, like in the middle of the night, you may have a duodenal ulcer. It is a different type of peptic ulcer that occurs in the upper small intestines, rather than in the stomach.

Indigestion

Apart from stomach pain, you may also experience indigestion or heartburn. These symptoms can cause you to feel bloated or to burp more than normal.

Nausea

Nausea is another symptom of peptic ulcers. If your ulcer tears, it can start bleeding. This can cause you to feel especially nauseated and you may vomit up blood.

Loss of appetite

Having an ulcer can cause you to lose your appetite or not feel hungry. You may also feel full even though youve only eaten a small amount of food. These symptoms can cause you to lose weight quickly and unexpectedly.
