Metabolic Health And Cardiovascular Disease

Greater than one-third of the worlds adult population is now classified as overweight or obese and approximately 25% meets criteria for the metabolic syndromea clustering of different metabolic abnormalities including abdominal obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension., Obesity and the metabolic syndrome are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and all-cause mortality and, worldwide, represent a major public health burden, with safe and effective therapies urgently required.

Acute consumption of EVOO specifically has also proven beneficial in terms of several cardiometabolic markers of health. Findings from a randomized control trial of 30 participants with impaired fasting glucose levels showed that 10g of EVOO added to meals was associated with a reduction in blood glucose, triglyceride, apolipoprotein B-48, and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 activity levels and a significant increase in insulin and glucagon-like peptide 1 levels in the peripheral blood.

Specific Carbohydrate Diet For Uc

Similar to the low FODMAP diet, the SCD restricts certain carbohydrates from a personâs diet to help reduce gastrointestinal symptoms. It is a grain-free, low sugar, and low lactose diet.

It theorizes that people do not fully digest complex carbohydrates and therefore they remain in the gut. These carbohydrates cause an overgrowth of bad bacteria in the small intestine, leading to inflammation.

Studies on the SCD are still in their early stages, but anecdotes support its effectiveness. Research from a 2016 study showed 33% reported remission within 2 months after starting the SCD. Almost half of the people were in remission within 6â12 months of starting the diet.

Foods allowed in the SCD include:

  • meats, or substitutes without additives
  • shellfish
  • juices with no sugar or additives

Foods to avoid include:

  • cereals, bread, and pasta
  • baked goods that use grain-based flour

In addition, a person cannot eat anything processed and canned, including most processed meats. Other prohibited foods include:

  • certain legumes such as chickpeas and bean sprouts
  • seaweeds and their byproducts
  • all milk and milk byproducts with high lactose, including sour cream, ice cream, and commercial yogurt
  • candies and chocolates

Virgin Olive Oil May Prevent and Treat H. pylori Stomach Infections

Feb. 13, 2007 — Olive oil may be good for your stomach as well as your heart.

A new Spanish study suggests virgin olive oil may help prevent and treat H. pylori infections, which are responsible for millions of cases of gastritis and peptic ulcers each year.

Preliminary laboratory tests show the antioxidant compounds found in virgin olive oil are effective against several strains of H. pylori bacteria, which infects the lining of the stomach.

Researchers say these results must now be replicated in humans. But if future studies confirm the findings, incorporating virgin olive oil into your diet may help treat or prevent painful stomach ulcers.

Extravirgin Olive Oil & The Intestines

Your large and small intestines are essential for digesting your food and getting the nutrients throughout your body. Eating extra virgin olive oil in place of less healthy oils can improve the efficiency of your intestines. Olive oil also encourages your intestines to absorb more of the vitamins and minerals from the foods you eat, which makes it beneficial for individuals suffering from digestive disorders, reports the 2004 study in Gracas y Aceites.

New research is also showing that polyphenols in extra virgin olive oil may help balance the bacteria in our digestive tract slowing the growth of unwanted bacteria. On this list of polyphenols are: oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol and ligstroside. Some of these polyphenols are specifically able to inhibit the growth of the Helicobacter pylori bacterium the bacterium that leads to stomach ulcers and other unwanted digestive problems. Yet another category of polyphenols called secoiridoids, continues to be a focus in research on prevention of digestive tract cancers.

Supplements And Other Lifestyle Changes To Try

Besides diet and medicine, there are a few other therapies that could be helpful for people with ulcerative colitis.

Dr. Singh suggests focusing on adequate sleep and reducing stress to prevent flares. One of the most common causes of flare can be stress, so stress reduction is probably the best medicine I talk about when I see patients, he says.

There is also limited research surrounding the use of certain supplements and probiotics as a therapy for IBD, but more evidence is needed before recommendations are made12,13.

Ulcerative Colitis Frequently Asked Questions

One of the effects of extra virgin olive oil on the hepato-biliary system or a healthy digestive system is that it is a cholagogue, ensuring optimal bile drainage and full emptying of the gall bladder. Another effect is that it is cholecystokinetic, i.e. it stimulates the contraction of the gall bladder, which is extremely helpful in the treatment and prevention of disorders of the bile ducts. It stimulates the synthesis of bile salts in the liver and it increases the amount of cholesterol excreted by the liver.

In short, owing to its beneficial effect on the muscle tone and activity of the gall bladder, extra virgin olive oil stimulates the digestion of lipids, because they are emulsified by the bile, and it prevents the onset of gallstones. This points to a healthy digestive system.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil For Ulcerative Colitis

We received an email from Graham in England, who has been using extra virgin olive oil to help heal his ulcerative colitis. He takes it on an empty stomach, 3 times a day. And it is very important that you use a clean and potent brand of extra virgin olive oil . I wanted to let you read his story, along with complete dosing instructions, in case you would like to try it.

I also wonder how this same protocol would work using raw coconut oil instead of, or, along with the olive oil?

Graham writes: Here are a few of the main reasons why I believe it is so effective/protective for UC:

1) Kills some nasty bacterias like Helibactor Pylori.

2) Oleocanthal is a natural low dose anti inflammatory which also helps with pain relief around the body.

3) Its fatty acids have proven wound healing properties.

4) Speeds up digestive transit time. Every time I quit smoking my normal BMs ground to a halt. I experienced bloating and reduced BMs for a few weeks. Followed by the nastier UC symptoms and inevitable multi daily BMs and blood!

Cultivation Of Olive Oil

How Extra-Virgin Olive Oil Is Made In Greece | Regional Eats

The olive tree is native to the Mediterranean basin. Wild olives were collected by Neolithic peoples as early as the 8th millennium BC. The wild olive tree originated in Asia Minor or in ancient Greece. It is not clear when and where olive trees were first domesticated. Archeological evidences have shown that olives were turned into olive oil by 6000 BC and 4500 BC in Palestine.

Until 1500 BC, eastern coastal areas of the Mediterranean were most heavily cultivated. Evidence also suggests that olives were being grown in Crete as long ago as 2,500 BC. The earliest surviving olive oil amphorae date to 3500 BC , though the production of olive oil is assumed to have started before 4000 BC.

Olive trees were certainly cultivated by the Late Minoan period in Crete, and perhaps as early as the Early Minoan. The cultivation of olive trees in Crete became particularly intense in the post-palatial period and played an important role in the island’s economy, as it did across the Mediterranean. Recent genetic studies suggest that species used by modern cultivators descend from multiple wild populations.

Lisa Simon, RD, a registered dietitian in London, says theres a wide variety of healthy fats and we should encourage more people with Crohn’s disease to eat foods such as avocados, nuts and seeds, tahini, and extra-virgin olive oil.

When factoring in good fats, aim to get in omega-3 fatty acids , as well. Theyre in fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and tuna, as well as in walnuts and flax seeds. They can also be taken as supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids are believed to have anti-inflammatory effects on the body.

Virgin Olive Oil Good For Stomach

Researchers say previous studies show that other natural products rich in a class of antioxidants known as phenolic compounds — such as red wine, green tea, and cranberry juice — may inhibit the growth of H. pylori.

But until now the antibacterial properties of olive oil havenât been evaluated.

They say virgin olive oil is unique because it is one of very few edible vegetable oils with high phenolic content.

In the study, published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, researchers used laboratory experiments to simulate conditions found in the human stomach in order to evaluate olive oilâs ability to fight H. pylori bacteria.

Researcher Conception Romero and colleagues of the University Hospital of Valme, in Seville, Spain, found that the healthy phenolic compounds in virgin olive oil remained stable for hours in simulated acidic conditions of the stomach.

These phenolic compounds also had a strong antibacterial effect. The results of the lab studies showed olive oilâs phenolic compounds were effective against eight strains of H. pylori, including three that are resistant to some antibiotics.
