Abdominal ultrasound is not used for the diagnosis of stomach ulcer but it helps in ruling out other causes of abdominal pain or to help detect presence of fluid in the abdomen which may result from perforation of the stomach.

Other investigations that may be asked for may be used in getting the physiological condition of the individual or help rule out other disease conditions.

Here Are Some Simple But Effective Home Remedies For Gastritis:

1. Freeze It OutTake a glass of ice cold water, put two tablespoons of sugar, stir it really well and gulp it down. Repeat the process if you have to. This remedy is a quick fix and my personal favourite. A glass ice cold water helps to stabilise the body fluids. It is believed that cold water calms down the throat and chest burning. Therefore, drink a full glass of cold water and take a small walk. The acid rushing up to your throat will subside slowly.

2. Nothing Like CoconutGet tender green coconut water and keep sipping it till your pain subsides and you can make it a habit to drink it every day too. But be sure the coconut water is not tangy as that can cause acid reflux. Coconut water is rich in fibre, which is why it helps aid digestion and prevents the re-occurrence of acidity. Moreover, coconut water is known to cool the lining of the stomach, which further reduces the burning sensation.

Esophagitis Causes And Risk Factors

Causes

Esophagitis is caused by an infection or irritation in the esophagus. An infection can be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or diseases that weaken the immune system. Infections that cause esophagitis include:

Candida. This is a yeast infection of the esophagus caused by the same fungus that causes vaginal yeast infections. The infection develops in the esophagus when the body’s immune system is weak, such as in people with diabetes or HIV. It is usually very treatable with antifungal drugs.

Herpes. Like candida, this viral infection can develop in the esophagus when the body’s immune system is weak. It is treatable with antiviral drugs.

Irritation leading to esophagitis can come from any of the following:

  • GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease
  • Mint

Can Gerd Lead To Esophageal Cancer

GERD, or gastrointestinal reflux disease, is a common disorder that causes heartburn. If youre like many people with GERD, you may be curious about a possible connection to esophageal cancer. While esophageal cancer is a very uncommon complication of GERD, it is still important to become familiar with the potential effects of your condition and keep tabs on any changes in your health.

What Causes Esophageal Cancer

Throat cancer

We do not yet know exactly what causes most esophageal cancers. However, there are certain risk factors that make getting esophageal cancer more likely.

Scientists believe that some risk factors, such as the use of tobacco or alcohol, may cause esophageal cancer by damaging the DNA in cells that line the inside of the esophagus. Long-term irritation of the lining of the esophagus, as happens with reflux, Barretts esophagus, achalasia, Plummer-Vinson syndrome, or scarring from swallowing lye, may also lead to DNA damage.

Cancer is caused by changes in the DNA inside our cells. DNA is the chemical in each of our cells that makes up our genes which control how our cells function. We usually look like our parents because they are the source of our DNA. But DNA affects more than how we look.

Some genes control when cells grow, divide into new cells, and die.

  • Certain genes that help cells grow, divide, and stay alive are called oncogenes.
  • Genes that help keep cell division under control or cause cells to die at the right time are called tumor suppressor genes.

Cancers can be caused by DNA mutations that turn on oncogenes or turn off tumor suppressor genes. This leads to cells growing out of control. Changes in many different genes are usually needed to cause esophageal cancer.

The DNA of esophageal cancer cells often shows changes in many different genes. However, its not clear if there are specific gene changes that can be found in all esophageal cancers.

How Common Is Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer is not common, although it ranks among the 10 most common cancers in the world. The number of new cases of this type of cancer is about 4.2 per 100,000 people in the U.S. The number of new cases is estimated to have been 17,290 in 2018, with the number of deaths estimated at 15,850 people.

The five-year survival rate for people diagnosed with this type of cancer was 19.2% for 2008-2014. There were about 47,284 people with esophageal cancer in the US in 2015, according to estimates.

How Is A Peptic Ulcer Treated

Some peptic ulcers heal on their own. But if you donât treat them, the ulcers tend to come back.

They can erode the blood vessel wall in your stomach or small intestine. The ulcers also can eat a hole through the lining and get infected. Or they can cause swelling, which may block food from moving from your stomach into your small intestine.

If H. pylori is the culprit, your doctor may prescribe a mix of antibiotics to kill it. If aspirin and other NSAIDs are behind the ulcer, you may need to cut down on them, stop taking them altogether, or switch to another pain reliever.

Your doctor may also give you antacids to fight stomach acid, or prescribe medicine to lessen the acid your body makes. Prescription drugs called cytoprotective agents can help protect the lining of the stomach or small intestine so the ulcer can heal.

How Is Esophageal Cancer Classified

Can Stomach Ulcers Lead to Stomach Cancer?

Most cancers are grouped by stage, a description of the cancer that aids in planning treatment. The stage of a cancer is based on the location and depth of the tumor the involvement, if any, of the lymph nodes and the degree that the cancer has spread, if at all, to other tissue and organs.

In addition to staging the cancer, tumors may also be graded. Grading is a way of rating a tumor based on how much its cells look and act like normal cells. Tumor grading can also tell the doctor how fast the tumor is growing. Tumors with almost normal-looking cells that grow slowly are called low-grade tumors. Tumors with very abnormal-looking cells that divide rapidly are called high-grade tumors. High-grade tumors are more likely to spread than low-grade tumors.

Can Stomach Ulcers Just Go Away

Some ulcers follow a chronic pattern of healing temporarily on their own and then returning. This might happen if the factors contributing to your ulcer, such as NSAID use, smoking and alcohol, are temporarily reduced and then resumed. You wont completely heal your ulcer until you eliminate the cause, whether that is chronic NSAID use, H. pylori infection or an overactive stomach. Even after successful treatment, you can get another ulcer.

Contraindications And Use In Pregnancy

BPP may cause upper GI disorders such as dysphagia, esophagitis, and esophageal or gastric ulcer. Oral BPP should not be used in patients with serious esophageal disease. Other contraindications include hypocalcemia, renal insufficiency, osteomalacia, and hypersensitivity to any component of the product.5,912

Risedronate and alendronate are classified as pregnancy category C. At least two of the parenteral BPP, pamidronate and zolendronic acid, are rated pregnancy category D.5 Regarding the oral formulations, there is a theoretical risk of fetal harm, predominantly skeletal, if a woman becomes pregnant during or relatively soon after completing a course of a BPP.9 BPP should be avoided during pregnancy and lactation, and used only when the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to both mother and fetus. A pharmacovigilance study performed in England that involved 11 916 patients reported 2 pregnancies associated with alendronate therapy: in one patient the drug was taken during the first trimester, and in the other it was stopped 2 months before conception. In both cases, the mother and baby were normal.16

A recent systematic search on the risks and safety of BPP revealed 51 cases of exposure to BPP before or during pregnancy . None of them described any skeletal abnormalities or other congenital malformations in the infants.17

Injury To The Esophagus

Pharyngeal Cancer

Lye is a chemical found in strong industrial and household cleaners such as drain cleaners. Lye is a corrosive agent that can burn and destroy cells. Accidentally drinking a lye-based cleaner can cause a severe chemical burn in the esophagus. As the injury heals, the scar tissue can cause an area of the esophagus to become very narrow . People with these strictures have an increased risk of squamous cell esophageal cancer, which often occurs many years later.

Am I At Risk For Esophageal Cancer

There are two main types of esophageal cancer: squamous cell cancer and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus. Squamous cell cancers occur most commonly in individuals who smoke cigarettes, use tobacco products and drink alcohol. In addition, African Americans are also at increased risk of developing this type of cancer. This cancer is also very common in many areas in Asia. The frequency of squamous cell cancer of the esophagus in the United States has remained the same. Another cancer, adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, occurs most commonly in people with GERD. It is also very common in Caucasian males with increased body weight. Adenocarcinoma of the esophagus is increasing in frequency in the United States.

The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn, a condition that 20 percent of American adults experience at least twice a week. Although these individuals are at increased risk of developing esophageal cancer, the vast majority of them will never develop it. In a few patients with GERD , a change in the lining of the esophagus develops near the area where the esophagus and stomach join. When this happens, the condition is called Barrett’s esophagus. Doctors believe that most cases of adenocarcinoma of the esophagus begin in Barrett’s esophagus.

What Causes Dyspepsia

Often, doctors can’t find a cause for the irritation to the stomach lining. Stomach ulcers or acid reflux can cause dyspepsia. If you have reflux, stomach acid backs up into your esophagus . This causes pain in your chest. Your doctor may do some tests to find out if you have an ulcer or reflux disease. Some medicines, like anti-inflammatory pain relievers, can cause dyspepsia.

How Acid Reflux Damages The Esophagus And Possible Complications

Esophageal Cancer | Risk Factors, Pathogenesis, Signs and Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment

How GERD May Damage the Esophagus

The acid regurgitation can lead to a condition called esophagitis. Esophagitis is characterized by inflammation of the esophagus that often leads to ulcers, scar tissue, erosions, and difficulty in swallowing that cause pain and discomfort and even more acid regurgitation.

The condition can be diagnosed by your doctor by conducting an upper endoscopy and biopsy. Treatment begins immediately once the diagnosis is conclusive and you test positive for esophagitis.

Complications of Untreated GERD and Esophagitis

GERD should be treated immediately it is suspected. When left untreated GERD and esophagitis will corrode the esophagus further causing damage such as:

  • Esophageal stricture this is narrowing of the esophagus caused by scar tissues from the effects of GERD. This constriction causes a great deal of pain and difficulty in swallowing and sometimes food is caught in the throat. This poses a great health risk and needs treatment as soon as possible.
  • Esophageal ringsthese are rings formed from abnormal folding of the tissue in the lining of the esophagus. These rings can constrict the esophagus causing difficulty in swallowing.
  • Barretts esophagusthis is a condition resulting from damage of the cells in the esophagus overtime. This damage causes the cells in the esophagus to become similar to the cells in the stomach lining. The condition usually has no symptoms and poses a risk of esophageal cancer.

Common Causes Of Esophagitis

First of all, the majority of cases of esophagitis are caused by the effects of gastroesophageal reflux.

The acidic fluid rises from the stomach up the esophagus. Therefore, it causes irritation in the tissues.

Some factors that may lead to this problem are:

  • Excessive consumption of alcohol and cigarettes,
  • Prolonged use of medication,

Unfortunately, this condition can cause several complications. These include:

  • Scarring or tightening of the esophagus,
  • Tearing of the tissue covering the esophagus,
  • Barretts Oesophagus, a condition which causes changes in the cells of the esophagus, which increases the risk of cancer.

Its important to get a stomach ulcer taken care of because without treatment, ulcers and H. pylori can cause:

  • bleeding from the ulcer site that can become life-threatening
  • penetration, which occurs when the ulcer goes through the wall of the digestive tract and into another organ, such as the pancreas
  • perforation, which occurs when the ulcer creates a hole in the wall of the digestive tract
  • obstruction in the digestive tract, which is due to swelling of inflamed tissues
  • stomach cancer, specifically

Symptoms of these complications can include those listed below. If you have any of these symptoms, be sure to call you doctor right away:

  • weakness

Sore throat: Causes, Symptoms and Health measures

Stomach ulcers happen when theres damage to the layer that protects the stomach lining from the acids in your stomach.

This is usually a result of:

  • an infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria
  • taking anti-inflammatory medicines , such as ibuprofen or aspirin particularly if theyre taken for a long time or at high doses

It used to be thought that stress or certain foods might cause stomach ulcers, but theres little evidence to suggest this is the case.

Stomach ulcers can affect anyone but are more common in people aged 60 or over. Men are more affected than women.
