Coronavirus Pandemic Update 62: Treatment with Famotidine (Pepcid)?

Conditions Treated By Famotidine And Omeprazole

Famotidine and omeprazole can be prescribed to treat GERD, duodenal ulcers, and stomach ulcers. Both medications are also FDA-approved to treat erosive esophagitis , or inflammation of the lining in the esophagus. Erosive esophagitis is often caused by GERD.

Prescription famotidine and omeprazole can also be used to treat hypersecretory conditions, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. These drugs can help reduce stomach acid caused by rare disorders.

Milk And Other Dairy Products

Some people may find that a cold, creamy cup of milk provides some temporary relief, but in reality it worsens the symptoms of a peptic ulcer.

Whole milk as well as many dairy products are high in fat that can aggravate your current symptoms. Also, the protein in milk may encourage the production of excess stomach acid that can make an ulcer worse.

Even drinking milk on a full stomach can make things worse. Along with whole milk, strong-flavored cheeses, cream and buttermilk should also be avoided.

Over-the-counter versions of famotidine and omeprazole can be used for the relief of occasional or frequent heartburn. Acid reflux, which occurs when stomach acid gets backed up into the esophagus, is a common cause of heartburn.

Omeprazole is FDA-approved to treat Helicobacter pylori, or H. pylori, infections. The bacteria that cause this infection attacks the stomach lining, which can result in peptic ulcers. Treatment includes omeprazole combined with an antibiotic like amoxicillin or clarithromycin.

Can I Use Famotidine Or Omeprazole With Alcohol

Famotidine should be avoided with alcohol. Drinking alcohol while taking famotidine can increase the risk of CNS effects like confusion or drowsiness. Omeprazole may be fine to take with alcohol in moderation. However, mixing medications with alcohol should be avoided when possible, especially if you notice an increase in side effects.

How Does Famotidine Work

Stomach acid is made by parietal cells, a type of cell found in the lining of the stomach. These cells contain several switches that help control when acid production is turned on or off. One switch is a protein called the H2 histamine receptor. When this protein is activated, parietal cells begin making more acid3.

Famotidine is a type of drug known as an H2 receptor antagonist or simply an H2 blocker. H2 blockers attach to the H2 histamine receptor, preventing it from turning on and blocking the parietal cells from creating extra acid3. Less acid in the stomach reduces the chances that acid reflux will occur.

Ive had a love and hate relationship with famotidine. Its very effective with relieving the symptoms and at first I used to get subtle side effects , but most recently whenever I take it, Ive been having horrible side effects. For two nights I took these, my anxiety levels were at an all time high, experienced very bad muscle spasms throughout my body, and had no sleep for both nights. Ive finally decided to stop taking it even though it relieves my symptoms instantly. Also, it confuses me how anxiety is labeled as a rare side effect but reading a lot of these reviews make it seem like it really isnt.

Herbal Helps For Ulcers

Numerous studies have found the anti-inflammatory herb licorice to be an effective anti-ulcer compound.16 Note, though, that glycyrrhizic acid, one of the primary active ingredients in licorice, can cause an elevation in blood pressure and in some individuals, salt retention, leading to rapid weight gain. Deglycyrrhizinated licorice is a form of the herb with the glycyrrhizic acid removed. Studies show it may be a successful anti-peptic ulcer agent without any known side effects.17

Aloe Vera inhibits H. pylori. The gel of this succulent herb serves as a moisturizing emollient that promotes healing and stimulates protein synthesis in tissues.18 Please, note that individuals with low thyroid levels should not take aloe vera internally on a regular basis.

A few more words about ginger. In his book, The Green Pharmacy, medical botanist, James Duke, mentions that ginger contains 11 anti-ulcer compounds. Both it and the herb chamomile are purported to be helpful in treating ulcers.19 Many naturopathic-oriented doctors recommend drinking two to three cups of strong chamomile tea each day for treatment of PUD.

A cautionary note: if you are taking any medications, be sure to consult with your pharmacist regarding any potential herb-drug interactions before using botanical agents.

Famotidine and omeprazole are two common drugs that can be used to treat a number of digestive problems. Whether you are experiencing a duodenal ulcer or symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease , your healthcare provider may recommend a drug like famotidine or omeprazole. These drugs work in similar ways to decrease acid production in the stomach. Although theyre usually found over the counter , famotidine and omeprazole can also be prescribed by a doctor.

Antacids like Tums are often tried first before starting on something stronger like an H2 blocker, such as famotidine, or a proton pump inhibitor , such as omeprazole. Fortunately, famotidine and omeprazole are generic medications that are widely available. While they are both considered acid reducers, they differ in how they work and how theyre used.

How Do I Take Dgl

Could a Popular Heartburn Medicine (Pepcid) Treat Coronavirus?

The standard dosage for DGL in acute cases is two to four 400 mg.* chewable tablets between or 20 minutes before meals. For more mild chronic cases or for maintenance the dosage is one to two tablets 20 minutes before meals. Taking DGL after meals is associated with poor results. DGL therapy should be continued for at least 8 to 16 weeks after there is a full therapeutic response.

It appears that in order to be effective in healing peptic ulcers, DGL must mix with saliva. DGL may promote the release of salivary compounds which stimulate the growth and regeneration of stomach and intestinal cells. DGL in capsule form has not been shown to be effective.

Warnings For Other Groups

For pregnant women: There havent been enough studies done in humans to show if famotidine poses a risk to a human fetus. Research in animals has not shown a risk to the fetus when the mother takes the drug. However, animal studies dont always predict the way humans would respond.

Talk to your doctor if youre pregnant or planning to become pregnant. This drug should only be used in pregnancy if clearly needed.

For women who are breastfeeding: Famotidine may pass into breast milk and may cause side effects in a child who is breastfed. Talk to your doctor if you breastfeed your child. You may need to decide whether to stop breastfeeding or stop taking this medication.

For seniors: The kidneys of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, more of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk of side effects.

For children:

  • Famotidine may be used in children with peptic ulcer disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease .
  • This drug hasnt been studied in children under 18 years of age for the treatment of pathological hypersecretory conditions or reducing the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence.
  • Famotidine tablets are not recommended for use in children weighing less than 40 kg . This is because the strengths of these tablets are greater than the recommended dose for these children. For these children, consider using another form of famotidine .

Pepcid Reviews, Price, Coupons, Where to Buy Pepcid ...

I’m 25 years old. My doctor told me I had stomach ulcers 5 months ago. been using famotidine tablets 20mg once everyday since. I skip a dose and def feel the acid and pain return within a day. This has helped me but I’m not convinced I’m healing… I sometimes eat spicy because I love spicy food but it’s only around once or twice a month. I don’t drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes anymore. I’m not convinced it’s healing my ulcers very fast or if at all but it does take care of the acid and steady pain I have without it. No side effects accept maybe a little stomach growling if I haven’t eaten. Best part is it’s cheap and you can buy it over the counter. Prilosec did absolutely nothing for me. Going to try Nexium and Pepto Bismal Next.

Getting The Most From Your Treatment

  • A course of treatment can vary in length depending upon the reason why you are taking famotidine. You could be asked to take the tablets for a few weeks or for several months. Keep any appointments that you have booked with your doctor so that your progress can be checked.
  • Some people say that certain foods make their symptoms worse. Foods and drinks that have been suspected of this include peppermint, tomatoes, chocolate, spicy foods, hot drinks, coffee and alcoholic drinks. If it seems that a food is aggravating your symptoms, try avoiding it for a while to see if your symptoms improve. Also, try avoiding eating large meals, as these can make your symptoms worse too.
  • If you are overweight, this puts extra pressure on your stomach and encourages the symptoms of acid reflux. Losing some weight and eating a healthy balanced diet may help you.
  • Smoking increases the amount of acid produced by the stomach and may make your symptoms worse. If you are a smoker, speak with your doctor or pharmacist about how to quit.
  • If you buy any medicines ‘over the counter’, always check with a pharmacist that they are safe to take alongside your other medicines.
