It is safe to take prednisone and budesonide together. Prednisone and budesonide are comparable in their effectiveness in treating Crohns disease. They have similar side effects, including increased appetite, moon face, mood swings, water retention, easy bruising, increased risk of infections, muscle weakness, insomnia, and fatigue.

Corticosteroids such as prednisone carry a higher risk of developing more serious side effects, including osteoporosis, cataracts, diabetes, adrenal insufficiency, Cushings syndrome, and avascular necrosis when taken for an extended period. Budesonide is often prescribed at the same time as other IBD medicines. This can include 5-ASAs , immunosuppressants and biologics . You will usually take the budesonide for a short time, to quickly control your symptoms whilst you are waiting for the other medicines to work. Then you will gradually reduce your dose of budesonide, allowing the other medicine, called a maintenance treatment, to take over and keep you in remission.

Budesonide can interact with other medicines this can cause the medicines to work differently, or can increase your risk of side effects with the budesonide. So it is really important you tell your IBD team if you are taking other medicines, including herbal treatments, over the counter medicines and complementary therapies.

Some medicines can block liver enzymes that normally break down budesonide, which can increase the amount of budesonide in your bloodstream, making side effects more likely. These include some anti-fungal medicines, and some antibiotics.

There is a chemical in grapefruit which can increase the amount of budesonide in your bloodstream. This can make side effects more likely, so it is best to avoid eating grapefruit, or drinking grapefruit juice, whilst taking budesonide.

Youll need to undergo a gradual reduction of your steroid dose to give your body time to start making its own steroids again.Some symptoms of secondary adrenal insufficiency are similar to those of Crohns and Colitis, and include:

The initial dosage of prednisone varies depending on the condition being treated and the age of the patient.

• It’s recommended that you take this medication with food.
• The starting dose may be from 5 mg to 60 mg per day, and often is adjusted based on the response of the disease or condition being treated.
