Distinction From Arterial Ulcer

What Are Arterial Ulcers? Arterial Ulcer Treatment

A venous ulcer tends to occur on the medial side of the leg, typically around the medial malleolus in the ‘gaiter area’ whereas arterial ulcer tends to occur on lateral side of the leg and over bony prominences. A venous ulcer is typically shallow with irregular sloping edges whereas an arterial ulcer can be deep and has a ‘punched out’ appearance. Venous ulcers are typically ‘wet’ with a moderate to heavy exudate, whereas arterial ulcers are typically ‘dry’ and scabbed. The skin surrounding a venous ulcer may be edematous and there may be evidence of varicose veins the skin surrounding an arterial ulcer may be pale, cold, shiny and hairless. Both venous and arterial ulcers may be painful, however arterial ulcers tend to be more painful, especially with elevation of the leg, for example when in bed.

Can You Prevent Venous Insufficiency

If you have a family history of venous insufficiency, there are steps you can take to lessen your chances of developing the condition:

  • Dont sit or stand in one position for long stretches of time get up and move around frequently.
  • Dont smoke and if you do smoke, do everything you can to quit.
  • Maintain a healthy body weight.

Take these steps to prevent the development of venous leg ulcers, especially if you are at a higher risk. Also, if an ulcer does develop, talk to your doctor right away.

What Types Of Venous Disease Cause Venous Stasis Ulcers

Chronic venous insufficiency is a common cause of valve dysfunction. It occurs when your valves are damaged or too weak to do their job.

Other venous ulcer causes include:

  • High blood pressure , which damages blood vessel walls.
  • Venous obstruction, a vein blockage thats sometimes due to blood clots.
  • Venous reflux, when blood flows backward through weak or damaged valves.

What Are Venous Stasis Ulcers

Commonly located on the ankle or calf, venous stasis ulcers are painful and red in color but may be covered with a yellow, fibrous tissue and an irregular border.

Drainage and discharge are possible with venous stasis ulcers. This type of ulcer is common in patients with a history of leg swelling or varicose veins.

Venous Hypertension / Insufficiency

Venous Stasis Ulcers Treatment · Vein Treatment Center NYC · Top ...

The most common cause of poor healing on the lower leg is venous hypertension. You may also hear it referred to as venous insufficiency, venous reflux or venous disease. Venous means anything related to our veins. Blood is pumped from our heart to the rest of our body through our arteries and returns to our heart through our veins. It is then propelled back to our heart by our heart pumping. Our leg and foot muscles help this along by circulating blood as we walk and move our ankles. This is why standing a lot or sitting with our legs down for long periods may stop a wound from healing.

Our veins contain one-way valves to stop the blood falling back towards your feet. These valves can become weak or damaged. When this happens, our veins become so swollen that blood is forced into the tissue of your skin. This makes our skin swollen, fragile and unable to heal as normal.

You might also notice that your ankles are swollen, that there is brown staining on your legs or that your wound is leaking.

To help our veins work better and to control any swelling, compression therapy is an essential part of any treatment plan.

Does Cleaning Venous Leg Ulcers Help Them To Heal

Background

Leg ulcers are open skin wounds that develop below the knee, usually because blood flow is poor in the lower leg. This can occur because of blockages, for example when small blood clots form in the veins. It can also happen when the valves in the veins that prevent blood from flowing backwards stop working properly. Poor blood flow damages the skin and tissue, and creates venous leg ulcers.

Ulcers are unsightly and may become painful or infected. On average, ulcers take from six to nine months to heal. However, some ulcers can take years to heal, and a small number never do. Once ulcers have healed, they can reoccur.

The main treatment for venous leg ulcers is to use bandages or stockings that compress the leg , to increase blood flow in the veins. It is also thought to be important to clean the wound. Different types of cleaning solutions can be used, including: normal saline water antiseptics detergents or disinfectants .

Cleaning solutions can be applied to the ulcer using a swab , a syringe with a needle, or a spray canister. Ulcers can also be bathed in the cleaning solution, using a basin or bucket, or during a shower. Cleaning can cause discomfort, and may be painful.

Wound Won’t Heal? How do we treat Venous Ulcer?

Venous ulcers dont heal on their own. The longer you live with them, the greater the likelihood of permanent tissue damage. The damage can spread or cause infections that can become life- or limb-threatening, such as gangrene.

In severe cases, it may be necessary to surgically remove your affected limb. Timely care from an experienced wound care provider significantly lowers this risk.

ABSTRACT: Venous ulcers, also referred to as venous stasis ulcers , are the most common cause of ulcerations that affect the lower extremities. These types of ulcers are experienced by an estimated 1% of the U.S. population. The incidence of VSUs is most prevalent among the elderly population and is also ubiquitous in patients with a medical history of edema in the legs, long-standing varicose veins, or blood clots in either the superficial or the deep veins of the legs. VSUs generally occur in the lower extremities, especially along the medial distal ankle. In general, treatments for VSUs include compression therapy, local wound care and debridement, various types of wound dressings, antibiotics for infected wounds, the use of pharmacologic agents such as pentoxifylline, aspirin, calcium channel blockers, and topical corticosteroids when warranted, as well as surgery and other forms of adjunctive therapy.

Venous ulcers, also referred to as venous stasis ulcers , are perceived to be the most common cause of ulcerations affecting the lower extremities and can be severe and debilitating in nature.1-3 VSUs affect an estimated 1% of the U.S. population and are responsible for more than 80% of lower extremity ulcerations.1-3 Statistics also report that an estimated 2.5% of patients admitted to long-term care facilities have VSUs.4

  • Age peripheral circulation becomes less efficient with old age.
  • Varicose veins the one-way valves that stop blood from travelling backwards in the vein stop working. The pooling of blood stretches and distorts the vein.
  • Cigarette smoking tobacco is known to constrict the vessels of the circulatory system.
  • Arterial disease vein problems are more likely if the person already has other diseases of the arteries.
  • Certain disorders these include diabetes and arthritis.
  • Pressure sores bed-bound people are at risk of pressure sores, which are areas of damage to the skin caused by constant pressure or friction.

Causes Of Leg And Foot Ulcers

What is a leg ulcer? Dr. Salti explains.

Veins have internal valves that prevent the backward flow of blood. Since the pumping action of the heart is weakest in your feet and lower legs, these valves are essential for one-way movement of blood, assisted by your leg muscles as you walk and function throughout your day.

When you dont have sufficient movement, such as when you have a job that requires long hours in sitting or standing positions, the valves take on more than their share of the blood burden, and some may begin to fail due to the backward pressure of circulation.

Blood begins to pool, and it can leak out into surrounding tissue. When it reaches the skin, it begins to cause problems that eventually lead to venous ulcers.
