Its one thing to know which foods are nutritious for you, but another to safely consume them. As one MyCrohnsAndColitisTeam member put it, The hard part is getting your nutritional requirements in with limited choices. Practicing meal planning and preparation techniques can be helpful to ensure adequate nutrition.
Members often share creative ways theyve found to incorporate nutritious foods into their diet safely. I made some pureed green sauce with greens, anchovies, garlic, and EVOO to add to roasted veggies and soups, said one. I have a Nutri Ninja. It purees my fruits and veggies, so I eat lots of smoothies with almond milk and Activia yogurt added, shared another.
It may also be helpful to purchase meal replacements, such as protein shakes, to keep your weight up. One member had a tip for weight gain: I increase the recipes that use lots of natural fats olive oil, coconut oil, coconut cream, avocado and I might increase my red meat. All of those make me feel super healthy.

A study published in March 2019 in the journal Frontiers in Immunology reported that short-chain fatty acids, such as butyrate, which are produced by the good bacteria in the GI tract, have an anti-inflammatory effect in the intestines. You can find foods that produce short-chain fatty acids in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Administration Of A Bronze Tomato
We recently demonstrated that the administration of a murine chow enriched with 1% of dried Bronze tomato was able to prevent/delay the intestinal damage induced by DSS administration using WT C57Bl/6 mice . However, we did not determine whether the Bronze tomato dietary supplement was able to exert beneficial effects in the context of an ongoing intestinal inflammation. Here, we explored the effects of nutritional intervention in a model of spontaneous progressive ulcerative colitis. WT and Winnie mice were fed for 2 weeks with 1% control or bronze tomato-enriched diets. Figure 1A shows the experimental setup. Administration of the enriched diets did not alter the weight of WT and Winnie mice nor their colon weight and length . Morphological analysis of the explanted colon did not reveal differences between Control and Bronze treated mice .

While these gas causing vegetables are frequently behind flatulence problems, there are other potential causes such as certain fruits that cause gas, wheat gluten, poor protein digestion, sugar alcohols, excess fructose and especially the lactose in milk and a long list of other foods.

Water And Other Fluids
The risk of dehydration is ever present with IBD because of chronic diarrhea. Kidney problems can also result when the amount of fluids entering the body doesnt keep up with the amount leaving it. Even when you dont have symptoms, its a good idea to prioritize water.
Aim for: At least eight 250-ml glasses of water or other fluid every day. Some acidic juices, such as pineapple or tomato, may irritate your digestive tract, so stick to clear fluids whenever possible and avoid carbonated beverages, which can contribute to bloating. The polyphenols in green tea may help to reduce diarrhea.

What Can You Eat

Beer And Wine: Beer especially is a very gassy beverage, and wine is something that you can drink only if you know that it wont adversely affect you. Even so, water is probably the best choice for a beverage.
Ulcerative Colitis Medications& Surgery
The goal of all ulcerative colitis treatment is to reduce colonic inflammation. The most effective drugs or medicines for this purpose are the salicylates, which are related to aspirin.
When aminosalicylates do not work, corticosteroids are used. A third type of anti-inflammatory drug known as immunomodulators are also used, but it may take weeks or months for these drugs to work.
The latest technology in the treatment of ulcerative colitis is the use of biologic drugs, which target the bodys immune system in order to help heal ulcerative colitis.
Biologic therapy must be given intravenously every few weeks, and involves administering antibodies that are directed at the molecules produced by the immune system that cause inflammation.
Inspired by low incidence of UC in developing countries, there are ongoing clinical studies into the possibility that the pig whipworm may be useful as ulcerative colitis treatment because some scientists theorize that worms in the colon change the immune response and consequently reduce inflammation in the process. 42% of UC patients in one study saw their symptoms improve after eating pig whipworm eggs for three months.

Eating When You Are In Remission
While theres no cure for UC, you may experience periods of remission. During this time, youll be symptom-free and your UC wont interfere with your daily life.

What If Youve Had Surgery For Uc
