Biologics are derived from natural sources, such as human or animal genes or microorganisms, and are designed to act on the immune system, specifically the parts that play key roles in fueling inflammation.
As inflammation is thought to be a cornerstone of the process involved in the manifestation of inflammatory bowel diseases, like Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis, they have proved to be very effective as treatment for certain patients, says Donald Tsynman, MD, a gastroenterologist at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
The fact that biologics target the activity of the patients own immune system is what sets them apart from some other medications for ulcerative colitis, Dr. Tsynman says.
What Does Having An Infusion Feel Like
Everyone is unique, experiencing pain and discomfort differently, so this is a hard question to answer. People report varying levels of discomfort at having a cannula inserted into their vein, some experiencing little or no discomfort at all. Most people dont feel anything when the medicine goes into their vein, although occasionally it can feel cool for a short time.
The build up to, and worry about having, an infusion can often be worse than the actual infusion itself. On top of that you might be concerned about the time it takes to have an infusion, the need to take time off work, or organise childcare. You may find it becomes easier after a few treatments, are more familiar with the routine, and know what to expect. Hopefully by then you will also be feeling better.

Today I will be focusing on what its like to receive an infusion of a biologic medication. When I first started dating my boyfriend I was receiving one biologic via infusion in Michigan and he was on another biologic and receiving it in Illinois where he lives. Ive had my infusions done at 3 different locations and have gone with him for his to a couple locations.
What is interesting about infusions is that it seems like regardless of the medication being received or the location there is a lot about the process that remains the same or very similar. With that said keep in mind that this is just a general post and experiences will vary slightly.
Currently Remicade, Entyvio, and Tysabri are the biologics that are approved to treat Crohnâs disease and ulcerative colitis in the US and can be administered by infusion. One drug on the horizon for the treatment of IBD will begin with an induction of an infusion and will then switch to self-injection after the initial infusion dose.

Can I Treat Ibd If I Am Pregnant Or Breastfeeding
Yes, but your doctor may change the type or amount of the medicine you take. Some medicines, such as methotrexate and thalidomide, cause birth defects and other health problems and should not be taken while you are pregnant or breastfeeding.31

If you stop taking your medicines and your symptoms come back , it may be difficult to get them back under control.31

No, Remicade isnt a form of chemotherapy. Remicade is a biologic, which means its made from living organisms. Specifically, Remicade is monoclonal antibody thats made from immune system cells in a lab. Monoclonal antibodies only block the activity of certain proteins in the body.
Chemotherapy, on the other hand, is a chemical drug that destroys rapidly growing cells throughout the body. Its typically used to treat cancer. Chemotherapy medications affect many types of cells and organs. This is different from the very specific actions of monoclonal antibodies, such as Remicade.
Tips For Infusion Day
Its been two years since I started getting my medication for my ulcerative colitis by infusion. I get my infusions every six weeks, which isnt quite often enough to completely get used to them. I still wake up early each infusion morning remembering I have an appointment and worrying Ill sleep through my alarm and miss it. But in the two years Ive been doing this, I have learned a few things along the way.
1. Bring things to do that you enjoy. Some infusions have lasted three hours, plus the time spent in the waiting room and waiting for the medication to arrive. Compared with that experience, the half-hour infusion usually flies by. But as with any doctors appointment, I never know how long Ill have to spend waiting around, and I like having multiple options to distract me. I usually bring something fun to read or download a couple of episodes of a show I like onto my iPad, and I make sure I have music or podcasts to listen to. Sometimes I even bring a coloring book. I rarely ever use all of these options, but it makes me feel better knowing I have them.
3. Drink lots of water beforehand. I cant believe it took me two years to figure this one out. Before every infusion, a nurse would spend what felt like an eternity poking around at my arm trying to find a good vein. Sometimes it would take more than one person to try putting in an IV. Since I started making a conscious effort to drink more water before my appointment, I havent had that problem.

How Do Doctors Treat Symptoms And Complications Of Ulcerative Colitis

- If you are getting Remicade ask your doctor about Rapid Remicade. There have been studies done that found that the standard 2 hour infusion can be done in half the time safely and successfully. I got rapid Remicade when I was on it and it shortened the infusion time by half!
- Bring things with you to occupy your time. I liked to bring my computer and headphones with me to keep me entertained. Many of the times I would work on blog posts for my website. Other ideas are: A book to read, coloring books, homework, your planner to organize your week, etc.
- Dress comfortable. When I was first on Remicade I used to wear my pajamas and sleep during my infusion because the IV Benedryl I was given as a pre-med would make me sleepy. I got used to it over time and could no longer sleep during infusions but I still liked to dress comfy unless I had somewhere to be afterward.
