Living With Colitis And Training As An Olympic Athlete
2016 Olympic discus athlete Brett Morse shares his experiences of training and nutrition whilst dealing with Ulcerative Colitis. Ulcerative Colitis is one the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease and affects more than 146,000 people in the UK alone. Brett explains how he gets the right nutrients for his training regime while managing this condition.
What is your daily training routine?At present I am training one to two times a day, six days a week. These are split into weightlifting, throwing, running, throwing specific and rehabilitation sessions to achieve maximum results.
What does a daily meal plan look like?As I am trying to build muscle and increase my power output, it is essential that I take in enough daily calories to fuel my training. I also need to eat carbohydrates in the morning and around training sessions as glycogen is the crucial fuel for fast twitch muscle fibre. My typical daily meal plan looks like this:
Meal 1 60g gluten free oats with water, three whole eggs and three eggs whites.
Meal 2 Cottage cheese, JBC BCAA
Meal 3 Brown rice, chicken/salmon/turkey and vegetables.
Meal 4 Protein bar, two pieces of fruit, JBC BCAA
Meal 5 White rice, salmon/turkey/chicken and vegetables
Pre workout Creatine, JBC BCAA, 20g protein
Intraworkout JBC BCAA, JBC Pro Complete
Post workout Creatine, JBC BCAA, 50g protein, 30 gummy sweets
Meal 6 Three egg whites, chicken/fish/turkey, vegetables
Meal 7 Cottage cheese or peanut butter.
Will Smoothies Help Me Lose Or Gain Weight
Lots of IBD patients use smoothies to sneak in added calories when theyre not feeling well. Including small amounts of healthy plant fats, such as avocados, nut butters, and coconut oil, add calories and nutrients without too much bulk. Plus, lots of folks find drinking is easier than eating when appetites are poor.
Ive worked with IBD patients who eat 2-3 homemade smoothies daily, in addition to their meals, to promote weight gain and boost intake of healing nutrients. Be careful not to drink a smoothie right before mealtimes because all that fluid in your belly might make it hard for you to eat.
If youre looking to lose weight, then you might choose a highly nutritious vegetable smoothie as a meal or snack replacement.
Whatever you do, be careful to make or choose combinations low in sugar, and include a healthy protein if the smoothie is taking the place of a meal.
Ulcerative Colitis: Let’s Talk
Colitis, Ulcerative Colitis, and Crohn’s are often used interchangeably – but in reality, they explain three different conditions. Colitis is the general inflammation of large intestine lining . It is synonymous with Irritable Bowel Disease and encompasses multiple conditions. Ulcerative Colitis: is a specific digestive issue, identified by ulcers on your large intestine.

Is Ulcerative Colitis A Genetic Condition
One of the most significant risk factors for Ulcerative Colitis is family history. Scientists believe that individuals inherit genes that put them at risk for Ulcerative Colitis. At some point in life, environmental factors trigger the immune systems to attack the large intestine and the disease sets in.
Researchers estimate that between 10 and 25 percent of people with Ulcerative Colitis have an immediate family member with IDB. It is also believed that if one parent of a child has IBD, the child has a two percent risk of also developing IBD at some point in life. If both parents have IBD the risk for the child increases. Ulcerative Colitis is also more prominent in individuals who have more distant relatives that suffer from Ulcerative Colitis. Research also indicates that in individuals with a family history of Ulcerative Colitis, the age of disease onset tends to be earlier.
More specifically, studies have been conducted on both identical and fraternal twins who have Ulcerative Colitis. If one twin has Ulcerative Colitis, their identical twin will also have Ulcerative Colitis about sixteen percent of the time, while their fraternal twin will have Ulcerative Colitis about four percent of the time.
Despite all these statistics, it is important to note that most individuals with Ulcerative Colitis do not have a family history of IBD.

What To Eat During An Ulcerative Colitis Flare
Research shows that nutrition cant cause or cure ulcerative colitis. There are no foods that can cause someone to develop ulcerative colitis, and there is no miracle diet that will cure people of the condition. However, good nutrition does play an important role in the management of ulcerative colitis symptoms, especially during a flare.
Ulcerative colitis flare-ups are uncomfortable and frustrating. Pain, bloating, cramping, fatigue, rectal bleeding, and diarrhea are common symptoms during flare-ups. Pregnancy and breast-feeding: If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, green tea in small amounts about 2 cups per day is POSSIBLY SAFE. This amount of green tea provides about 200 mg of caffeine. However, drinking more than 2 cups of green tea per day is POSSIBLY UNSAFE. Consuming more than 2 cups of green tea daily has been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage and other negative effects due to the caffeine content. Also, green tea might increase the risk of birth defects associated with folic acid deficiency. In women who are nursing, caffeine passes into breast milk and can affect a nursing infant. Dont drink an excessive amount of green tea if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Tired blood: Drinking green tea may make anemia worse.
Anxiety disorders: The caffeine in green tea might make anxiety worse.
Bleeding disorders: Caffeine in green tea might increase the risk of bleeding. Dont drink green tea if you have a bleeding disorder.
Heart conditions: Caffeine in green tea might cause irregular heartbeat.
Diabetes: Caffeine in green tea might affect blood sugar control. If you drink green tea and have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar carefully.
Diarrhea: Green tea contains caffeine. The caffeine in green tea, especially when taken in large amounts, can worsen diarrhea.
Glaucoma: Drinking green tea increases pressure inside the eye. The increase occurs within 30 minutes and lasts for at least 90 minutes.
Can Ulcerative Colitis Cause Me Constipation
Some individuals with Ulcerative Colitis experience constipation. No matter which symptoms you experience, learn how to prevent and treat your Ulcerative Colitis constipation before it affects your quality of life.
In general, Ulcerative Colitis causes inflammation in the large intestine and the rectum. When the inflammation associated with UC is concentrated in the rectum, you are likely to feel constipated. This happens because the inflammation in the rectum makes it difficult to pass stool out of your body. This form of Ulcerative Colitis is called proctitis. For individuals with proctitis, constipation may be accompanied by bleeding and a sense of urgency that are usually experienced with diarrhea. Youre Avoiding Certain Healthy Foods
It can be hard to eat a healthy diet or anything at all if youre experiencing abdominal pain, cramps, or nausea. But if youre not eating the right foods, you could be at risk of nutrient deficiencies, malnutrition, and unwanted weight loss.

Track The Good And The Bad
There’s no single diet that will help everyone with UC. The condition can also change over time, so your plan will need to be flexible, too. The key is to find what works for you.
To stay organized, keep a food diary. Use your smartphone or a small notebook to record what you eat and drink and how they make you feel, both good and bad. It takes a bit of time and patience, but it will help you track your condition and fine-tune your diet plan.
When you prepare your meals, don’t forget that a well-balanced diet gives you enough protein, whole grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables.
You might not be able to eat everything in the grocery store or on the menus at the restaurants you like. But try to focus on the ones that you can enjoy without triggering your symptoms. Some simple tweaks in your meal prep can make it easier to eat some foods, like steaming veggies or switching to low-fat dairy.
Some people follow a low-residue diet or low-fiber diet every so often, getting about 10-15 grams of fiber a day. That can help you go to the bathroom less often.

If youre having trouble getting enough nutrients in your ulcerative colitis diet, opt for eggs. Eggs are an excellent and healthy fats and are also gentle on the system due to our ability to digest them relatively easily, Armul notes. Look for eggs that are fortified with omega-3 fatty acids for even more nutritional benefits. Eggs are also rich in B vitamins, which convert food into energy, and the antioxidant selenium. The extract of P. americana Mill. was dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide and diluted with deionized water to prepare final concentration of 50 mg/mL stock solution. The sample was filtered through a 0.2 µm polyvinylidenefluoride syringe filter before being injected.
A Waters Alliance 2690 HPLC system linked with a photodiode array detector and JMS-T100TD mass spectrometer equipped with electrospray ionization source were used for chromatographic and mass spectrometric analysis. The chromatographic separation was carried out on the Waters Atlantis® T3 C18 column . The mobile phase consisted of acetonitrile and acidified water with 0.1% formic acid . The gradient condition of the mobile phase was 05 min, 0% 510 min, 0% to 10% 1015 min, 1% 1570 min, 1% to 60% 7071 min, 60% to 100% 7180 min, 100% as percent of solvent A. The injection volume was 10.0 µL. The flow rate was set at 1.0 mL/min and the column oven temperature was maintained at 25 °C and the detection wavelength was 280 nm. The conditions of MS analysis in the positive ion mode were as follows: scan range, m/z 501000 desolvating chamber temperature, 250 °C orifice1 temperature, 80 °C orifice 1 voltage, 80 V orifice 2 voltage, 10 V ring lens voltage, 5 V peak voltage, 1000 V detector voltage, 1900 V nitrogen gas flow rate, 1.0 L/min and 3.0 L/min .
The Measurement Of Total Flavonoid Content
The total flavonoid content was expressed as mg of total flavonoids per gram of the dried EEP after reacting for 15 min at room temperature by adding 100 L of 2% aluminium chloride hexahydrate to 100 L of each extract. The absorbance was detected by micromultiplate reader at 430 nm. The total flavonoid content was calculated from the standard curve of quercetin .

Food Prep And Meal Planning
Planning meals, snacks, and even your hydration efforts in advance gives you control over everything youll be consuming.
With preparation, you can avoid making quick decisions when youre hungry or thirsty that could result in a flare-up.
Taking the time to plan out your meals and read nutrition labels may take a couple of hours initially, but it can save tons of time throughout the week overall. Helpful steps include:
- buying ingredients in bulk
- cooking in batches
- preportioning your meals before storing them in the fridge or freezer, making them easier to reheat and eat
Not only will you have your meals prepared ahead of time, but youll also help limit food triggers, allowing you to feel better and be more productive overall. Buying and planning your snacks ahead of time is a good way to avoid reaching for trigger foods, too.
Additionally, because frequent diarrhea from UC can cause you to lose more fluid than you put into your body, planning water intake can help you avoid dehydration.
Constipation can be a symptom for some individuals, and their dietary needs may differ.
What Causes Ulcerative Colitis
The cause of ulcerative colitis is unknown but it is believed to be caused by a combination of several factors including an overactive immune system, genetics, and the environment.
- Overactive immune system: It is believed that in ulcerative colitis, the immune system is triggered to mistakenly attack the inner lining of the large intestine, causing inflammation and symptoms of ulcerative colitis.
- Genetics: Ulcerative colitis can run in families. The genetic link is not entirely clear but studies show that up to 20% of people with ulcerative colitis have a close family member with the disease.
- Environment: Certain environmental factors including taking certain medications , and eating a high-fat diet may slightly increase the risk of developing ulcerative colitis.
Physical or emotional stress and certain foods do not cause ulcerative colitis, however, they may trigger symptoms in a person who has ulcerative colitis.

Now you know how you can design your daily menu without having to stress about flare-ups. There are also other alternative remedies available that, along with your choice of food, can help alleviate the pain and discomfort. Heres what else you can do to pacify your colon.
Can Certain Foods Really Cause Inflammation
The link between what we eat and chronic inflammation in the body isnt fully understood. What is known is that there does seem to be some connection.
Lets jump into the science: The liver produces something called C-reactive protein as a response to inflammation in the body. In short, higher levels of CRP mean more inflammation, and certain foods have been shown to increase levels of CRP in the blood.
Now, the specifics of what foods cause this increase is somewhat up for debate, but its possible that things like processed sugar can trigger the release of inflammatory messengerslike CRPa sign that they may potentially be contributing to an inflammatory state.
On the other hand, foods like fruits and vegetables may help fight oxidative stress, which is a trigger for inflammation. Certain diets, like the Mediterranean diet, already include many foods that are considered to be anti-inflammatory such as whole grains, legumes, a rainbow assortment of fruits and vegetables, and fish.
