Mouth Sore Remedy #: Saltwater Rinse

Stomach Ulcer (Peptic Acid Disease) Medication â Pharmacology | Lecturio

Making a saltwater rinse can be a convenient solution for mouth sores.

Never put salt directly on an ulcer. Instead, make a saltwater rinse by combining one teaspoon of fine salt in one cup of warm water. Gargle and rinse your mouth with this solution for about 30 seconds, then spit it out. This can be repeated several times throughout the day.

These antacids can be used occasionally for acid indigestion or heartburn, or as a regular part of treatment of a stomach ulcer.

These medicines interfere with tetracycline and a number of other medicines. If you are using another medicine, take it 2 hours before or after these antacids.

Antacids with magnesium sometimes cause diarrhea, and those with aluminum may cause constipation.

Take an antacid when you have pain, often about an hour after meals. Or take before bedtime to prevent problems when you lie down. Chew 1 or 2 tablets, or drink 10 ml syrup. It is OK to use these 4 or 5 times a day, but if you have to take this much for several days in a row, you probably need a different treatment.

Common Types Of Antacids

Many different types of antacid are available. Some are sold under a brand name and others are named after their main ingredient. Brands include Gaviscon and Pepto-Bismol .

Ingredients to look for include:

  • aluminium hydroxide
  • calcium carbonate
  • sodium bicarbonate

Some antacids also contain other medicines, such as an alginate and simeticone .

Disease Spotlight: Ulcer Disease

Erosions in the lining of the stomach and adjacent areas of the GI tract are called peptic ulcer.

  • Ulcer patients present with a predictable description of gnawing, burning pain often occurring a few hours after meals.
  • Many of the drugs that are used to affect GI secretions are designed to prevent, treat, or aid in the healing of these ulcers.
  • Further research led many to believe that, because acid production was often normal in ulcer patients, ulcers were caused by a defect in the mucous lining that coats the inner lumen of the stomach to protect it from acid and digestive enzymes.
  • Treatment was aimed at improving the balance between the acid produced and the mucous layer that protects the stomach lining.

Nursing Implementation With Rationale

The nursing interventions for patients using antacids are:

  • Adequate drug absorption. Administer the drug apart from any other oral medications approximately 1 hour before or 2 hours after to ensure adequate absorption of the other medications.
  • Ensure therapeutic levels. Have the patient chew tablets thoroughly and follow with water to ensure that therapeutic levels reach the stomach to decrease acidity.
  • Perform diagnostic testing. Obtain specimens for periodic monitoring of serum electrolytes to evaluate drug effects.
  • Prevent imbalances. Assess the patient for any signs of acid-base or electrolyte imbalance to ensure early detection and prompt interventions.
  • Institute a bowel program. Monitor the patient for diarrhea or constipation to institute a bowel program before severe effects occur.
  • Ensure adequate nutritional status. Monitor the patientâs nutritional status if diarrhea is severe or constipation leads to decreased food intake to ensure adequate fluid and nutritional intake to promote healing and GI stability.
  • Provide patient support. Offer support and encouragement to help the patient cope with the disease and the drug regimen.
  • Educate the patient. Provide thorough patient teaching, including the drug name and prescribed dose, schedule for administration, signs and symptoms of adverse effects and measures to prevent or minimize them, warning signs that may indicate possible problems and the need to notify the health care provider immediately.

May Act As A Deodorant

Some anecdotal evidence shows milk of magnesia may be effective as a deodorant. Like with other topical uses of the substance, there haven’t yet been scientific studies done to quantify these results. Individuals say they’ve tried it and seen results, but the reason for these results and if they were related to the milk of magnesia is unknown. Most individuals who have used milk of magnesia as a deodorant say they did so after dealing with strong body odor that was not helped by many different brands and extra-strength deodorants with different ingredients.

To try milk of magnesia as a deodorant, individuals should first put a small amount into a cup. They should allow the liquid to evaporate from the cup for several days until they’re left with a paste rather than a thin liquid and then apply a thin layer under the arms. There have been hundreds of individuals claiming they have seen significant results when placing milk of magnesia on their underarms. Whether it works on other areas that commonly accrue body odor or not isn’t currently known.

Sodium Bicarbonate Bicarbonate Of Soda Baking Soda

Sodium bicarbonate should be used only occasionally for stomach upset with heartburn or acid indigestion. Do not treat chronic indigestion or ulcers with it. Although it helps at first, sodium bicarbonate causes the stomach to produce more acid, which soon makes things worse. As an occasional antacid, mix ½ teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate with water and drink it.

Alka-Seltzer is a combination of sodium bicarbonate and aspirin. If you have an ulcer, the aspirin in it will make the ulcer worse.

Persons with heart disease or with swelling of the feet or face should not use sodium bicarbonate or other products that contain sodium.

How Are Ulcers Diagnosed

Your healthcare provider may be able to make the diagnosis just by talking with you about your symptoms. If you develop an ulcer and youre not taking NSAIDs, the cause is likely an H. pylori infection. To confirm the diagnosis, youll need one of these tests:

Endoscopy

If you have severe symptoms, your provider may recommend an upper endoscopy to determine if you have an ulcer. In this procedure, the doctor inserts an endoscope through your throat and into your stomach to look for abnormalities.

H. Pylori tests

Tests for H. pylori are now widely used and your provider will tailor treatment to reduce your symptoms and kill the bacteria. A breath test is the easiest way to discover H. pylori. Your provider can also look for it with a blood or stool test, or by taking a sample during an upper endoscopy.

Imaging tests

Less frequently, imaging tests such as X-rays and CT scans are used to detect ulcers. You have to drink a specific liquid that coats the digestive tract and makes ulcers more visible to the imaging machines.
