The Role Of Gut Bacteria

Many types of bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract are pathogenic, but the human gut also houses certain bacteria that are beneficial to digestion because they help to break down complex carbs and synthesize vitamins, such as vitamin B12. “Good” bacteria aid the immune system by processing toxic contaminants in the GI tract, which helps prevent food- and waterborne illnesses.

When disease-causing bacteria take up residence in the mucosal layers of the stomach, small intestine and colon, a healthy community of beneficial microorganisms can keep the pathogen population in check. Maintaining a healthy microbiome encourages the “good” bacteria to compete for resources with pathogens, which prevents further colonization of the “bad” bacteria.

According to an analysis published in October 2017 in Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, approximately 50 percent of people are infected with H. pylori, and the rate of infection is estimated to be much higher in developing countries. This bacterium spreads easily via saliva and contaminated water, but not everyone who is infected develops gastritis. Diet may be a key factor in promoting the colonization of “good bacteria” and hindering the spread of pathogenic bacteria.

The first probiotic on the list is my personal favorite, the one that cured IBS for me and my mom, among many other problems.

The Physicians Choice probiotic contains 60 billion CFUs coming from 10 different probiotic strains.

One of my favorite things about this probiotic is the fact that it is physician-approved, as well as the fact that the capsules have a patented acid-resistant technology that ensures all the healthy bacteria make it down to your gut, without it being destroyed by your stomach acid.

The added prebiotic blend is another great addition, as it improved the effectiveness of the probiotics.

The recommended daily dosage according to the instructions is a single capsule per day, ideally 30 minutes before breakfast with lots of water.

Its also worth mentioning that this probiotic is free of GMOs, dairy, soy, gluten, wheat and eggs its 100% organic.

Why Do You Need Probiotics

How much time do you have? Jokes aside, there are countless health benefits of probiotics. One of the most obvious advantages of probiotics is their ability to keep the microbiome in balance. Let’s break it down.

When you get sick, there is an uptick in the amount of pathogenic, or bad, bacteria hanging out in your digestive tract. Probiotics help knock out the bad bacteria and restore a healthy ratio of good to bad bacteria within the gut.

But that’s just the beginning. “We know that the gut microbiome affects multiple body systems including the digestive system, immune system, endocrine system and central nervous system,” says Kristy Del Coro, RDN, a Maine-based registered dietitian and co-founder of the Culinary Nutrition Conference.

Research has already shown that gut health likely:

When taken for a long time, painkillers like diclofenac and ibuprofen can lead to ulcers in the stomach and duodenum. But the risk of this happening can be clearly reduced by also taking medication to protect your stomach.

Many people who have osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis regularly take non-steroidal in order to reduce pain or inflammation in the joints. Commonly used NSAIDs include acetylsalicylic acid , ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen.

One disadvantage of these medications is that they often cause stomach and bowel problems when taken for several weeks or months. Stomach ulcers or duodenal ulcers may develop as a result. These ulcers are collectively known as peptic ulcers. The duodenum is the first part of the intestine just behind the stomach.

NSAIDs reduce the production of the hormone prostaglandin. One of the things prostaglandin does is increase the production of gastric mucus and substances that neutralize stomach acid. If there is too little prostaglandin, the stomach lining becomes more susceptible to damage from stomach acid. It can then become inflamed, and eventually ulcers may develop.

The Right Probiotics For Your Stomach Problems And More

You’ve probably heard that probioticsthe active cultures in some yogurts, for exampleare good for your health. But not all probiotics are created equal. Here’s what you need to know to boost immunity, soothe itchy skin, quell an upset stomach, and more.

Michelle Klawiter was nine days into a course of antibiotics for a sinus infection when the gut pain hit. Bloody diarrhea quickly followed. The 42-year-old secretary and mother of three in Chandler, Ariz., had developed a nasty intestinal infection, the kind that sometimes occurs when antibiotics kill your bodys good bacteria along with the bad and lower your defenses to other invaders.

Doctors prescribed a series of increasingly potent antibiotics to try to knock out the new bad bug, Clostridium difficile , but nothing worked. Her tummy troubles turned into antibiotic-associated colon inflammation.

And even after three months, sometimes the pain and cramping was so bad I thought I would pass out, Klawiter says. Having lost 20 pounds and feeling unable to cope at her job in a small office with two bathrooms, she quit. RELATED: The Best Foods for an Upset Stomach

The nightmare ended only after Klawiter tried a probiotic that her gastroenterologist had read was effective against C. diff. Klawiter found the over-the-counter product, called Florastor, at her drugstore. Within a week, she recalls, I was eating normally again.

What Are The Symptoms Of Stomach Ulcers In Horses

What Are The Symptoms Of Stomach Ulcers In Horses?

What causes stomach ulcers in horses? Up to 90 percent of racehorses and 60 percent of show horses, as well as non-performance horses and even foals are affected by equine gastric ulcers. These are the result of the erosion of the lining of the stomach due to a prolonged exposure to the normal acid in the stomach.

What to do if you suspect your horse has ulcers? If you suspect your horse may have ulcers seek advice from your vet, as medication to reduce acid production and allow the ulcers time heal may be required initially.

Will horse ulcers heal on their own? Most ulcers in the equine stomach occur at the interface between the glandular and non-glandular portions of the stomach. Ulcers in the stomach can heal on their own, over time, but factors like stress and metabolic status can inhibit healing ability.

What Are Probiotics Exactly

Probiotics are living microorganisms that naturally exist in the GI tract and also occur in some foods. Contrary to popular belief, probiotics are bacteria and/or yeast, not whole foods. That is, certain foods contain probiotics, but they aren’t probiotics themselves.

Probiotics are considered the “good” kind of bacteria. That’s because they confer countless health benefits, like improved digestion and immunity, per Harvard Health Publishing.

The gut naturally houses both good bacteria probiotics and bad bacteria, such as C. Diff, a bacterial strain that induces severe diarrhea and inflammation in the colon.

The gut typically contains some 100 trillion bacteria, according to Harvard Health Publishing.

That sounds like a lot, right? But here’s the thing: “Although the digestive tract naturally produces probiotics, it’s beneficial to also consume more foods naturally rich in probiotics to increase your levels and the variety of strains of the good bacteria in the gut,” explains Rebecca Ditkoff, RDN, a New York City-based registered dietitian who specializes in digestive health. More on that in a minute.

Probiotics Help Stomach Ulcers

How Long Does It Take For A Stomach Ulcer To Heal?

Results from an animal study from Hong Kong suggest that people with stomach ulcers may benefit from probiotics and speed up their recovery. The report, published in the European Journal of Pharmacology, looked at the effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, one of the most extensively studied strains of probiotics, on gastric ulcer induced in rats. In this study, we demonstrate for the first time that a probiotic strain L. rhamnosus GG is capable of accelerating gastric ulcer healing, wrote lead author Emily Lama from the University of Hong Kong.

Stomach or peptic ulcers are defined as a small hole or erosion in the gastrointestinal tract. Most stomach cancers are caused by Helicobacter pylori bacteria, with some studies already showing that probiotics may have benefits against these types of bacteria. According to statistics from the US National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, peptic ulcers affect 14.5 million Americans.

The new research, if it can be reproduced in humans, suggests that probiotics may also offer benefits for people already suffering from stomach ulcers. Lama and coworkers used acetic acid to induce ulcers in rats and the animals were then given L. rhamnosus GG intragastrically for three days. It was observed that the probiotics successfully colonized in the stomach lining, especially around the ulcer.

What Are Probiotics And Why Would You Need Them

Among the estimated 100 trillion microbes living in your gut, there are some really helpful bacteria. They break down stuff like fiber into nutrients that your body then uses for energy and as a weapon against everything from cardiovascular disease to cancer.

Bottom line

The pro in probiotics refers to good bacteria that you can ingest as food or in tablet form, among other methods. If the good bacteria survive the journey through your digestive system into your gut, they will settle in and colonize it, eventually driving out the bad guys.

H2 Blockers: Effectiveness Depends On Dose

The studies on H2 blockers mainly looked at the drugs famotidine and ranitidine. These studies lasted up to one year. Both drugs were shown to prevent peptic ulcers, but their effectiveness greatly depended on the dose taken. When taken at lower doses, the medications only reduced the risk of duodenal ulcers. When taken at higher doses, they effectively prevented both stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers:

  • Without an H2 blocker, 36 out of 100 people developed an ulcer.
  • With an H2 blocker, 15 out of 100 people developed an ulcer.

In other words, higher doses of H2 blockers prevented peptic ulcers in 21 out of 100 people.

The effective doses in the trials were 40 mg twice daily for famotidine and 300 mg twice daily for ranitidine. These medications were also well tolerated at higher doses. Side effects such as headaches, diarrhea or constipation may occur, though.

Can Probiotics Treat Other Gi Issues

Studies show that probiotics help with symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease. But more research to form a standard treatment goes on.

Research into whether probiotics may help people with Crohnâs disease is less clear. The studies have been small, and we need more research into what types of probiotics might work. Because of this, doctors aren’t likely to recommend probiotics to people with Crohnâs disease.

Medication To Prevent Ulcers

Various medications can lower the risk of getting a peptic ulcer. These include, in particular, drugs called proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers. Both of these types of drugs reduce the production of stomach acid. In Germany, the most commonly used PPIs are omeprazole and pantoprazole. The H2 blocker that is normally used is ranitidine.

The hormone-like drug misoprostol is sometimes used too, although less often. One of the things misoprostol does is increase the production of gastric mucus, which helps protect the stomach wall. In Germany, misoprostol is available as a combination drug together with the painkiller diclofenac.

The Best Probiotic Foods

“The gut microbiome is literally and figuratively the core of overall health, so eating foods that are good for the microbiome is good for your health,” Del Coro says.

Probiotics naturally occur in some fermented foods, but, they can also be added to foods. “Different groups of probiotic bacteria and yeasts you may see on food labels include Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Saccharomyces boulardii,” Del Coro says.

These foods have naturally occurring probiotics:

Some easy ways to incorporate these foods in your diet are to use yogurt instead of mayo for homemade tuna or chicken salads, throw sauerkraut or kimchi on top of grain bowls and salads and add miso to salad dressings and sauces, Del Coro says.

“Just remember to consume probiotics raw,” Del Coro says. “The cooking process kills the live beneficial bacteria in these foods.”

One more thing: If probiotics are new to you, start slow. “If you aren’t used to eating a lot of fiber and then load up on foods like kimchi and sauerkraut, you may experience increased gas or bloating,” Del Coro notes. Those with digestive issues like Crohn’s or IBS may also have trouble tolerating probiotic-rich foods.

The Probiotic Enema To Treat Uc

Yogurt, Probiotics and the Mini-Gastric Bypass

As unpleasant as it may sound, you can choose to directly apply probiotics to your colon via an enema.

The advantage is that the good bacteria dont have to go through the harsh environment of your digestive system to reach the colon. Around 60 percent dont survive that stomach acid waterslide.

More research is needed on the effectiveness of this treatment for UC, but one 2010 study called it a well-tolerated treatment alternative.

A 2011 study found that administering some strains with an enema in combination with oral medication may be beneficial for children with UC.

Ways Probiotics May Be Able To Ease Your Stomach Pain

Nowadays, stomach pain seems to affect nearly every person in the United States.

For some, its just a passing bout of discomfort.

For others, stomach pain is a debilitating condition that makes life nearly unbearable.

Whichever camp you fall into, theres a bit of hope on the horizon in the form of probiotics.

More and more studies are showing that probiotics can treat many different causes of stomach pain.

Lets take a quick look at 7 common stomach ailments and how probiotics may provide relief

How They Compare To Other Uc Treatments

The most common prescription medication for UC is mesalamine. This is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug . Several large studies looked at how well E. coli Nissle worked compared to mesalamine. They found that the treatments were equally effective against UC.

No studies have compared VSL#3 to mesalamine head-to-head, but experts think the probioticâs effects on UC are similar.

Food Sources Of Probiotics

Probiotics found in common food items are also a good source of healthy bacteria for your gut.

You never know which foods might trigger a UC flare though, so start out slowly and keep a food diary to record when you decide to introduce new items to your diet.

Some good probiotic-rich foods to try are:

  • Yogurt
  • Other fermented milk products such as kefir or Yakult a great source of calcium for the lactose intolerant
  • Sauerkraut
  • Other fermented foods you can make at home
  • Tempeh and miso , which are also good sources of protein

A lot of yogurts youll find in the grocery store are overheated during production, which kills healthy bacteria. To get the most from a yogurt, look for one that contains the live and active cultures seal and includes lactobacillus and/or Bifidobacterium.

Everyones UC triggers are different, and some of these recommended probiotic foods might be a no-go for you.

Mastica Benefits For Stomach Ulcers:

Lactobacillus Probiotic

One antibiotic alternative that we find works extremely well is known as mastica, or mastic gum. Mastica, derived from a Greek shrub, has been used since Roman times to treat stomach ailments of all kinds. Research shows that mastica supplements eliminate H. pylori, allowing patients to avoid the downsides of antibiotics, which include killing all stomach bacteria, including those that are absolutely necessary for good health. You can purchase mastica supplements at health food stores we recommend taking 500 mg twice daily, once in the morning and again in the evening for a minimum of 30 days. By then, the ulcer should be healed, but some people continue taking mastica just to be sure its gone.

In addition, be prepared to make some lifestyle changes. Smoking and drinking alcohol are off limits for ulcer patients, as are standard pain-relieving medications. Fortunately, there are far more healthy pain-relieving substitutes. White willow bark supplements are one option we suggest to our readers white willow bark is the original source of salicylic acid, the primary ingredient originally used in aspirin. But todays aspirin is made from synthetic ingredients and can cause serious stomach problems if taken on a daily basis, even at low doses. You can find white willow supplements in health food stores. We recommend one to two 400 mg capsules as often as needed.

Take good care.
