What The Research Says About Turmeric For Ulcerative Colitis
One early study of 50 patients, published in 2015 in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology & Hepatology, found that patients taking mesalamine and 3,000 milligrams of curcumin via capsules achieved remission faster than those taking mesalamine and a placebo.
Another study, published in December 2019 in the journal Phytotherapy Research, which included 70 patients, found that 1,500 mg of curcumin per day, along with drug therapy, was associated with improvement of symptoms and overall quality of life in patients with mild to moderate ulcerative colitis.
In a comprehensive review published in January 2020 in the journal Annals of Gastroenterology, researchers gathered and analyzed all the human trials done on curcumin and ulcerative colitis to date. They found that patients using curcumin along with mesalamine were, on average, three times more likely to experience an improvement in symptoms than those who took mesalamine alone.
While these and other studies have shown promising results for the treatment of ulcerative colitis when used with drug therapy, trials with a larger number of people are needed to establish a clear role for curcumin, says the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation.

In addition, certain diet changes may help shorten flares. Some tips to keep in mind:
- Keep a food and symptom journal during flares to identify bothersome foods. This also ensures that foods are not avoided without cause.
- Eat small, more frequent meals as opposed to 3 large meals in a day .
- Ask your doctor whether to limit fiber until symptoms pass. Eating a maximum of 10 grams of fiber per day may reduce irritation and lower the risk of intestinal blockage. Once you are in remission, gradually increase your fiber intake, depending on how much you can tolerate, until you reach the recommended daily intake of 2530 grams.
- Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Your Best And Worst Foods
Everyone is different, so you are the best judge of what you can and cant eat. Some foods may trigger flares for you, and some may not. No foods are proven to cause or worsen Crohns.
It may help to keep a diary of what you eat and how you react to it. Over time, the diary may allow you to pinpoint troublesome foods and drop them from your diet. A food diary will also help you and your dietitian check the quality of your diet.

What To Eat In Remission Of Symptoms
If you have eliminated some foods, it is important to reflect upon which ones have aggravated your symptoms and which have not. Could it be time to re-introduce the safe foods back into your diet? Here are some tips on how stay healthy and hydrated:
- Fibre- rich foods: oat bran, beans, barley, nuts and whole grains are rich in fibre. Nuts and wholegrains will be foods to avoid if you had recent bowel surgery such as an ileostomy, intestinal narrowing, stricture or if your doctor/nurse has advised you take a low residue diet.
- Protein: Meats fish, eggs, nuts and tofu.

The plant was identified by Dr. Seyed Mostafa Ghannadian a pharmacognosist at the Pharmacognosy Department of Isfahan School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.
