Mutaflor Available for purchase in Canada however not in the United States, Mutaflor is a probiotic which contains the bacteria E coli Nissle 1917, which may be as reliable as mesalazine, a potent anti-inflammatory drug, in sustaining remission of ulcerative colitis.
How Do Probiotics Work Against Ulcerative Colitis
We often think of bacteria as dangerous and pathogenic . However, the human body naturally contains many types of bacteria and other microorganisms, such as yeasts. This mix of microorganisms is called our microbiome. The body needs several types of commensal bacteria to aid in digestion and stay in good health. These helpful bacteria fight off pathogenic bacteria that can cause illnesses. They also benefit us by producing B vitamins and vitamin K. Having a healthy balance of the right strains of bacteria is especially important for your gut, because these good neighbors aid digestion and help prevent food poisoning.
Because gut bacteria are so important to intestinal health, probiotics may be especially helpful in managing symptoms of ulcerative colitis. First, beneficial bacteria form a barrier in the intestinal tract that prevents harmful bacteria from reaching the colon walls. Second, probiotics encourage bacteria that thicken the mucus in the intestines. The thicker the mucus is, the better it protects the delicate colon tissues. Third, a healthy microbiome improves the overall health of the gastrointestinal immune system, increasing the production of helpful immune cells and reducing inflammation. These protective effects may also ease the symptoms of pouchitis, which occurs if the intestine becomes inflamed after surgery to remove tissue destroyed by ulcerative colitis.
Probiotics For Ulcerative Colitis: Are They Effective

Symptoms include pain, bloody stool, ongoing diarrhea, and fever. Probiotics live bacteria that can be part of your diet or taken as supplements may be able to ease these symptoms.

Where Can I Get Probiotics
There are countless types of probiotic products available and many strains of microorganisms that may be used in them. Two of the most common types of bacteria used are Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium.
You can get probiotics from a range of sources. You can find them in foods such as yogurt, kefir , and even sauerkraut.
You can also take them as supplements, in forms such as capsules, tablets, liquids, or gummies. Your local pharmacy likely has several options available.
If youre thinking of using probiotics, you should keep in mind that unlike prescription drugs, probiotic supplements are not regulated by the . This means the FDA doesnt check whether supplements are safe or effective before they go on the market.
If you would like guidance on finding a high-quality probiotic, talk to your doctor.
Prebiotics are carbohydrates that are the food for certain groups of bacteria. Consuming prebiotics can help boost the population of your own gut probiotics for this reason. Some natural sources of prebiotics include:
Which Probiotic Should I Take
Unfortunately there isn’t one probiotic that works for all. It is very individual as to whether probiotics will make a difference to you and depends on a number of factors including which type of IBD you have.
Probiotics can be expensive and there are dozens available to buy. They are all of varying quality and some are bought from a common distributor and rebranded by the company selling them. Some brands of probiotic do have clinical research available into their finished products in relation to IBD, but most do not.
Due to the cost of probiotics its worth spending some time doing research into them – such as the claims they make and the clinical research behind their product – before buying them. You may also find the experiences of other people with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis who use probiotics useful in making your choice.
The success you have with probiotics will be very individual and if you find that one product doesn’t work for you it doesn’t mean that none of them will. Unfortunately you may have to go through a process of trial and error to see if they are of benefit to you.
What are the different types of manufactured probiotics?
Manufactured probiotics available generally fall into three types:

Will Probiotics Cure My Ibd
No. Unfortunately there is currently no cure for IBD.
However, some people have found that some probiotics assist in alleviating some symptoms of their IBD. If you choose to take a probiotic it is recommended you do so alongside any other treatment you are undergoing and that you discuss taking it with your doctor before starting.
People who report success with probiotics have found a reduction in symptoms such as bloating, diarrhoea, fatigue, skin conditions and constipation. Probiotics are increasingly being recognised to help people who have irritable bowel syndrome. Many people with IBD suffer from IBS too.
The success rate varies from person to person and a probiotic that may produce results for one person may not do the same for another.
The Best Probiotics For Ibs: A Double
It certainly appears probiotics can help manage IBS, but only particular strains and mixtures.
Just keep in mind that they should not be used as a sole therapy.
In other words, probiotics are most effective in combination with current conventional treatments such as a medications , and before or after a low FODMAP diet.
Also note that they can be a double-edged sword what works fantastic for some may only make symptoms worse in others. It likely depends on your existing gut bacteria environment.
For this reason you should be willing to experiment with different strains and different brands. Where one type doesnt help, maybe another will.
The most clinically proven and recommended brands among gastrointestinal specialists are VSL#3, Symprove and Alflorex/Align, in no specific order. But as always, speak with your doctor before trying anything new.

Food Sources Of Probiotics
Probiotics found in common food items are also a good source of healthy bacteria for your gut.
You never know which foods might trigger a UC flare though, so start out slowly and keep a food diary to record when you decide to introduce new items to your diet.
Some good probiotic-rich foods to try are:
- Other fermented milk products such as kefir or Yakult a great source of calcium for the lactose intolerant
- Other fermented foods you can make at home
- Tempeh and miso , which are also good sources of protein
A lot of yogurts youll find in the grocery store are overheated during production, which kills healthy bacteria. To get the most from a yogurt, look for one that contains the live and active cultures seal and includes lactobacillus and/or Bifidobacterium.
Everyones UC triggers are different, and some of these recommended probiotic foods might be a no-go for you.
Many People Are Familiar With The Term Probiotics But What Are Prebiotics
Prebiotics are basically the metabolic fuel for probiotics. It’s a term that encompasses a number of mostly carbohydrates that are present in vegetables and grains, for instance in wheat, artichokes, legumes, etc. They are only partially digested by the human intestinal tract, so they reach the colon where they are fermented by bacteria. We have trillions of bacteria happily living in our colon, and they ferment these substrates. They’re happy with them, and so they thrive. The idea of taking prebiotics is that you can encourage the growth of good bacteria in the gut by providing them the food they like.

Patient information: See related handout on probiotics, written by the authors of this article.
Probiotics contain microorganisms, most of which are bacteria similar to the beneficial bacteria that occur naturally in the human gut. They are available over-the-counter or by prescription and in a variety of forms such as capsules, packets, or food supplements. Although most probiotics are available without a prescription, there may be an advantage to patients with prescription drug coverage because probiotics may be a covered benefit. Probiotics have been widely studied in a variety of gastrointestinal diseases, and one in five Americans takes probiotics for digestive problems.1 The most studied probiotics for human use belong to the Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, or Saccharomyces species.2 This article focuses on probiotic use in infants, children, and adults with GI conditions, and it excludes probiotics for non-GI diseases.
Vsl#3 Probiotic: Ulcerative Colitis And Ibs
VSL#3 is one of the strongest probiotics available at 450 billion bacteria per packet. To put this in perspective, Align, a probiotic promoted to help Irritable Bowel Syndrome , has only 1 billion bacteria per dose. The high concentration of good bacteria in VSL#3 may allow it to positively impact more serious and chronic conditions than other probiotics can.
Probiotics are good bacteria. Good bacteria have a number of purposes in the body. One of their big jobs is to reduce inflammation, a hyperactive immune response associated with allergies as well as with more serious illnesses like ulcerative colitis. At the same time, good bacteria prime your immune system to attack viruses. Probiotics seem to be associated with an all around reduction in bad immunity with a simultaneous increase in good immunity.
Reduced numbers of these friendly helpers may contribute to weakened immunity and allergies, as well as inflammatory GI tract illnesses like ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome.
Research with VSL#3 over the the last decade has shown that replenishing the gut with a high dose of good bacteria can often put people with inflammatory bowel disease into remission and keep them in remission. Researchers have also found a benefit for IBS with VSL#3

How Do I Tell Whats In A Probiotic
Probiotics must list on their labels whats in them, including the strains and any other ingredients added.
On a product, a probiotic strain should be listed as a long name followed by a series of letters, and sometimes numbers too. For example, Lactobacillus Rhamnosus GG, or Bifidobacterium lactis HN019.
The first part of the name is the genus. The second part of the name is the species and the letters and numbers at the end are the strain designation.
If you know what the name of each strain in the probiotic is you can link it to any research thats been done into the strain.
Some companies produce a Trademarked name for strains of bacteria in their products. This can be for marketing purposes and isnt an indication of one strain being better than another. If a product contains a Trademarked strain the packaging must still list the scientific name for the strain.
If a probiotic does not list the full name of the specific bacteria in the produce or they do not state how much of the bacteria is present in the product this is a sign to be wary.
Make sure the product contains at least the level of probiotics that was used in the research. These are shown as CFU on the bottle/packaging/website. Most successful probiotic research has used more than or equal to 109 CFU per dose so this is the amount of that bacteria needed to have the beneficial outcome shown in the study.
Where Is The Research On Prebiotics And Probiotics Headed
It’s interesting. There was a boom for years and then it died down quite a bit. From a laboratory standpoint, we don’t understand a lot about how the probiotics work. So I think the attention of scientists now is more focused on understanding the mechanisms of the interactions between these bacteria and the host, which are different between different individuals. Each one of us has a unique composition of intestinal flora. The same probiotics may have a different effect for you and me, because they interact with trillions of other bacteria, which are different for each person. So all of these nuances are going back to basic science before moving further to the clinical arena.
