- If you have strictures, it is especially important to avoid nuts, seeds, beans and kernels.
- Avoid foods that may increase stool output such as fresh fruits and vegetables, prunes and caffeinated beverages. Cold foods may help reduce diarrhea.
- If you have lactose intolerance, follow a lactose-free diet. Lactose intolerance causes gas, bloating, cramping and diarrhea 30 to 90 minutes after eating milk, ice cream or large amounts of dairy. A breath hydrogen test may confirm suspicions of lactose intolerance.
- If you have oily and foul-smelling stools, you may have fat malabsorption. Treat fat malabsorption by following a low-fat diet. Discuss these symptoms with your doctor or nutritionist.
- Smaller, more frequent meals are better tolerated and can maximize nutritional intake.
- If your appetite is decreased and solid foods not tolerated well, consider taking nutritional supplements .
Meals For Ulcerative Colitis With My Personal Recipe Examples
Eating for ulcerative colitis isnt about complexity. Its about simple foods and simple meals.
Its about foods that are whole and close to their natural, unprocessed state.
Its about calming the immune system down.
Its about the right fundamentals repeated with consistency and refined over time.
What are the fundamentals?
Eat meat, vegetables and fruit.
No nuts or seeds.
No nightshade vegetables .
And no cheating with junk foods or any other food that doesnt fit an autoimmune diet template!
This is the basic Paleo or Primal eating model modified specifically for autoimmune disease and more specifically for ulcerative colitis.
Dried Pineapple And Coconut Dates
Dried fruits and coconut dates are available at most grocery and health food stores.
High in sugar and not for those who arent well-healed, dried fruits can be a welcome sweet treat in an otherwise strict Paleo-AIP food plan.
Treat them like candy and eat them sparingly when you need a treat.
Dried fruits are loaded with carbs and sugar. They can trigger diarrhea or a flare-up. Too much of these, especially the pineapple, can really get you into gastrointestinal discomfort.
Some dried fruits may not work for you at all. Test them individually and be careful.
What Side Effects Of Ibd Can Cause Malnutrition
There are several reasons why people with IBD may be at risk for malnutrition. The following list includes some side effects that contribute to malnutrition.
- Inadequate food/fluid intake may by caused by nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite or altered taste sensation
- Increased losses â intestinal inflammation during acute flares results in increased protein losses, losses from fistula fluids, diarrhea and bleeding
- Increased nutritional needs â inflammation or infection increases metabolic requirements
- Malabsorption with Crohn’s disease may be caused by severe intestinal inflammation, resection of small intestine and medications, such as prednisone and sulfasalazine
Rule Number 3 Eliminate Gluten And Dairy Generally
Gluten, or more specifically gliadin, stimulates zonulin production that in turn increases intestinal permeability, AKA Leaky Gut.
This increased gut permeability makes us more susceptible to an autoimmune response.
This post isnt meant to be a science lesson, but you can check this study out if you want to learn a little more about the process itself.
Noteworthily, several studies have also found that the casein protein in dairy behaves similarly to gluten / gliadin in our guts, and may also promote leaky gut.
This would explain why coeliacs often show cross-reactivity to many dairy products.
And to be very plain for a second, pretty much everyone whos been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis or Crohns disease has experienced gluten and/or casein being problematic at least on occasion.
^ That very basic fact is important.
Its important to add though, that not all dairy is created equal.
In fact, certain types of fermented dairy have actually been shown to improve serum zonulin levels and may help to improve leaky gut. See here.
And we could also muddy the water even more and say that other lectins and lectin-like proteins can also cause issues..
But, Im here to give you the broad brush strokes and attempt to simplify things.
So to keep it basic
Stay away from dairy and gluten and youll be off to a good start.

Rule Number 7 If In Doubt De
Whilst most of the time consuming the skins and seeds of plant foods is not an issue, especially when you are not in a flare, if youre in doubt it can be a good idea to avoid them.
The skins and seeds are where most of the lectins & anti-nutrients , and other troublesome compounds are found.
Note that not all lectins are created equal and some are very well tolerated.
In fact, a lot of troublesome compounds in plants convey health benefits to humans through their hormetic effect.
That being said, if in doubt, remove.
The same rule applies to nuts.
If in doubt, and certainly if youre in a flare, remove.
What Blender Is Best For Making Smoothies
For most people, any old blender will do. But, if you have GI symptoms or plan to add whole nuts, seeds, or raw fruits or vegetables with thick skins and/or seeds then you might need a high-speed blender. A high-speed blender, like a Vitamix, will really pulverize those tough-to-digest nuts, skins, and seeds.

This is a common pitfall for many people.
Your tolerance to certain foods is commonly dependent on the serving size, not on the food itself.
If you are unsure of what a sensible serving size is, you can start with 0.5-0.75 cups of the given food.
