Will Rice Bran Make A Horse Hot
Rice bran can be part of the extra-fat-source for EPSM horses that balk at being fed large amounts of oil, although you have to watch the starch levels in these horses. It can be a good grain substitute for horses that get too hard to handle on grains or get digestive upset but still need a dense source of calories.
Can Bran Cause Colic In Horses
Bran is believed to have a laxative effect in people, but to get the same effect in a horse, youd have to feed huge amounts of it-more than he could eat. Some horses do produce softer stools the day after eating bran, but this probably reflects brans tendency to irritate the lining of equine intestines.
Is Rice Bran Or Wheat Bran Better For Horses
The choice of wheat vs. Even though wheat bran actually beats plain rice bran for available calories, the majority of rice bran products contain added fat, so they are more calorie dense. Both are palatable to most horses, but some horses may be put off by the very fine particle size in some wheat brans.

Is Rice Bran Good For Horses With Ulcers
Introduce a high-fat supplement, such as stabilized rice bran, in lieu of larger amounts of starch. Stabilized rice bran reduces acid secretion and increases output of prostaglandins that help protect the stomach lining Allow pasture turnout as much as possible, even if a grazing muzzle needs to be used and.
What Is Heat Stabilization And Why Is It Important
During stabilization, rice bran is subjected to intense heat and pressure that inactivate fat-destroying enzymes. Stabilization eliminates the possibility of rancidity and does not alter the nutritional content of the rice bran. The unique stabilization process used by Kentucky Performance Products to produce Equi-Jewel ensures its freshness.

What Feed Is Best For Horses With Ulcers
Feed long-stemmed hay at a minimum of 1-1.5% of body weight throughout the day, and make sure straw does not make up more than 25% of the total forage in the diet. When feeding concentrate, also providing alfalfa hay might help buffer the effects of gastric acid and reduce the number of ulcers that form.
Rice Bran And Metabolic Diseases
According to the University of Minnesota Equine Center, replacing carbohydrate calories with rice bran and its useful fat is helpful for quarter horses and draft breeds that are especially susceptible to polysaccharide storage myopathy which is characterized by the “abnormal accumulation of the normal form of sugar stored in muscle as well as an abnormal form of sugar in muscle tissue.â
Carbohydrates appear to worsen polysaccharide storage myopathy and by replacing carbohydrate calories with s form of fat such as rice bran, improved up to half of affected horses.

Things To Consider When Selecting A Rice Bran
While most references to rice bran actually refer to stabilized rice bran, the availability of unstabilized rice bran leads to some confusion.
Unstabilized rice bran spoils very quickly, in under a week if exposed to heat or in humid climates.
Quality rice bran products will indicate the percentage of free fatty acids as evidence of stabilization, and most will explicitly state the rice bran has been stabilized.
Stabilization isnt the only consideration. The best rice bran for horses is also fortified with calcium. Calcium is helpful to buffer stomach acid and prevent ulcers.
Unfortified rice bran, even stabilized rice bran, contains more phosphorus than calcium.
Fortifying stabilized rice bran with calcium produces a more favorable ratio, which is especially important for growing horses to slow the rate of growth and allow for correct skeletal and joint formation.
If your horse is a finicky eater, you may need to consider the form of rice bran you offer. Rice bran comes in a pelleted form, and it is also available as a meal.
Mealed rice bran can be mixed in with feed, used as a feed topper, or mixed with water to create a mash.
Remember, its important to always consult an equine veterinary professional before introducing any new food into your horses diet especially if your horse has a pre-existing medical condition.
Should I Incorporate Equi
Sure. Research has shown that young horses fed low-starch diets have less likelihood of developing orthopedic problems such as osteochondritis dissecans. When young horses are supplemented with Equi-Jewel, the amount of starch consumed is reduced, yet they still consume sufficient calories to grow and thrive.

Better Methods For Preventing Colic
If a bran mash doesnt actually do anything to prevent impaction colic, what does?
Especially in winter, hydration is critical. Ensure your horse is drinking plenty of fresh, warm water. Free access to quality forage is ideal for gut health and also helps provide the energy horses need to stay warm. Encourage movement, which is important to gut motility. My Stud Horse Loses Condition During The Breeding Season Got Any Suggestions
Depending on a stallions book, he may be utilizing a tremendous amount of energy covering mares during the breeding season. Along with the energy it takes to breed, some stallions become anxious and overly active, which causes additional weight loss. Equi-Jewel is a calorie-rich supplement that provides stallions with the additional low-starch energy they need to meet the demands of the breeding season. Equi-Jewels high-fat, low-starch calories reduce the hormone spikes that can cause additional excitability. By supplementing with Equi-Jewel, you can reduce the levels of starchy grains you feed and protect your stallion from the digestive upsets related to grain overload.

The Trouble With Bran Mashes
Though your horse may relish a nice, warm bran mash from time to time, too much of it can do more harm than good.
Bran mashes will not protect your horses digestive health. In fact, rice bran or wheat bran confer few, if any, health benefits for horses and carry some risks.
Bran is believed to have a laxative effect in people, but to get the same effect in a horse, youd have to feed huge amounts of it-more than he could eat. Some horses do produce softer stools the day after eating bran, but this probably reflects brans tendency to irritate the lining of equine intestines. If fed daily over a long period of time, bran may actually contribute to the formation of enteroliths.
But the bigger danger of feeding too much bran to horses lies in what it can do to the dietary calcium-phosphorus ratio. The two most abundant bodily minerals, calcium and phosphorus work together to build sound bones and assist muscle function. To do so, however, they must be absorbed in appropriate proportions by the body, which means that when a horse ingests phosphorus, he must also ingest an equal or, preferably, slightly greater amount of calcium.
That said, an occasional hot bran mash wont harm your horse, and hell likely relish the treat. Likewise, small amounts of bran can be incorporated into the daily diet, as long as the horse gets enough calcium from his other food sources.

Can You Feed Horses Rice
Wheat bran can be fed as a fiber source if it is fed daily and in small amounts. Feeding substantial amounts of wheat bran daily can lead to mineral imbalances. Nutritionists recommend no more than 1 lb per day and emphasize that it is very important to feed adequate calcium when adding wheat bran to the diet.

What To Give Horses With Ulcers
What To Give Horses With Ulcers? If a horse has gastric ulcers, they must be medically treated. Two drugs of choice, omeprazole and ranitidine. These drugs reduce/stop gastric acid production and create an environment in the stomach where healing can take place. Omeprazole appears to be the most effective.
What can I give my horse for suspected ulcers? There is currently only one pharmaceutical treatment omeprazole approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for gastric ulcers in horses. Omeprazole is available as a paste formulation and has been very effective in preventing and treating gastric ulceration in all types of horses.
What to feed horses with ulcers? Include alfalfa in the feed for horses with ulcers. Research has shown that alfalfa is a better buffer to acidity than other fibre sources due to its protein and calcium content.
What is the best supplement for horses with ulcers? In horses with gastric ulcers, feeding aloe vera improved the severity of lesions in the squamous region of the stomach. Forty horses with squamous and/or glandular lesions were either supplemented with aloe vera gel or treated with omeprazole for 28 days.
Benefits Of Oil For Horses With Gastric Ulcers
Oil or high fat feeds are also thought to be beneficial to horses with gastric ulcers as prostaglandins which inhibit acid secretion are derived from fatty acids. Oil may also bind free fatty acids within gastric fluid potentially creating a less acidic environment. One study found supplementing 45ml corn oil significantly lowered gastric acid output and increased prostaglandin concentration leading the authors to conclude that corn oil may theoretically be a way to increase the protective properties of the glandular mucosa . In another study though, where corn oil or rice bran oil were supplemented at higher levels, no improvement was found in the number and severity of ulcers in the non-glandular mucosa .

Low Glycemic Index Supplement
The glycemic index of a feed is the measure of blood glucose levels in response to feeding. A low-GI feed produces minimal spikes in blood glucose resulting in slow-release energy that decreases the risk of disorders such as developmental orthopedic disease, laminitis, digestive problems, and metabolic issues.
With so many feeds and supplements on the market, everyone wants to know that the product they choose will work!
A study was performed to test the effects of feeding Equi-Jewel or corn oil in exercised horses. During strenuous exercise, horses fed Equi-Jewel had lower lactic acid levels than horses fed corn oil. As lactic acid accumulates in the working muscle, horses become fatigued. The inclusion of stabilised rice bran as a substitute for corn oil in rations also resulted in lower heart rates and subsequent shorter recovery periods. In essence, horses fed Equi-Jewel will have greater stamina and endurance than horses fed corn oil.
Gastric Ulcers In Horses: Beet Pulp As Prevention
- PrintPrintPrint Post
Any horse can develop gastric ulcerspainful erosions of the stomach lining that contribute to weight loss, poor performance, irritability, and colic. Despite intense study of equine gastric ulcer syndrome in horses, failsafe management strategies have yet to be identified. One recent study on EGUS in warmbloods* reported that horses offered beet pulp had a lower risk of developing ulcers in the squamous part of the stomach.
Gastric ulcers occur either in the glandular part of the stomach that produces gastric fluid or the squamous or nonglandular portion. Ulcers in the glandular region are referred to as equine glandular gastric disease , while ESGD refers to ulcers in the squamous region.
Based on the most up-to-date data, primarily derived from performance horses with ESGD, some ways to potentially help prevent or manage the syndrome include:
- Offer as much fiber or forage as possible. Consider using alfalfa hay, as it contains natural buffers, for horses that require the energy it provides
- Avoid prolonged periods without forage
- Use low-starch feeds whenever possible.
- Introduce a high-fat supplement, such as stabilized rice bran, in lieu of larger amounts of starch. Stabilized rice bran reduces acid secretion and increases output of prostaglandins that help protect the stomach lining
- Allow pasture turnout as much as possible, even if a grazing muzzle needs to be used and
- Ensure horses have access to water at all times.

In summary, beet pulp is a good dietary supplement for hard keepers, as a forage or fiber replacement for poor quality hay, and for older horses with problems chewing or digesting hay. Beet pulp is an excellent source of digestible fiber and is an ingredient in high quality complete and senior horse feeds.
Stabilized Rice Bran Supplies A Highly Digestible And Safe Form Of Calories To The Diet
The fat found in rice bran is an extraordinary source of dietary energy. In fact, fat contains more than two times the energy that carbohydrates and proteins do, thereby fueling horses more efficiently. Fat is considered a cool feedstuff because it does not cause the hormone spikes that lead to excitability. Adding stabilized rice bran to your horses diet allows you to decrease the amount of starchy concentrates you feed, reducing the risk of colic and laminitis resulting from grain overload. It is an excellent source of energy for horses struggling with RER and PSSM.

I Use Corn Oil For My Show And Sale Horses But It Is So Messy Can I Use Equi
Yes. Equi-Jewel is popular among professional trainers and sales conditioners because it promotes healthy skin and a lustrous coat, and its use decreases grooming time. In addition, daily supplementation with Equi-Jewel can improve body condition of horses that do not carry sufficient weight. Unlike starchy grains, the fat in Equi-Jewel is burned at a slow and steady rate, countering the hormone spikes that lead to excess excitability, so horses remain calmer.
Fat Supplies A Highly Palatable And Digestible Form Of Energy For An Assortment Of Horses
Fat is an extraordinary source of dietary energy. In fact, fat contains more than two times the energy that carbohydrates and proteins do, thereby fueling horses more efficiently. Fat is considered a cool feedstuff because it does not cause horses to become excitable, as is often the case with horses that consume large amounts of starch-rich concentrates.
Rice bran has become a favorite fat supplement among owners and trainers of performance horses. Research has proven that fat is a superior energy source when compared to high-starch grains and commercial concentrates. Scientific studies have shown that, during strenuous exercise, horses fed fat had lower lactic acid levels than horses fed high-starch feeds. Because lactic acid causes muscle fatigue, horses fed fat had improved stamina. When rice bran was substituted for corn oil in rations, horses had lower heart rates, more stamina, and subsequent shorter recovery periods
In broodmares, studies have shown that mares in good condition and positive energy balance have better conception rates. Adding rice bran to the diet allows breeders to keep mares in better condition without the risk of grain overload. Rice bran has been shown to improve fertility rates in both mares and stallions.
Growing horses raised on high-fat, high-fiber, low-starch diets exhibit a lower incidence of developmental orthopedic disease.

What Causes A Horse Not To Gain Weight
A poor-quality forage or feed can house mycotoxins, dust, or mouldall of which can lead to health issues that could cause the animal to lose additional weight. Poor-quality feed and forage will also have lower levels of nutrients, which can easily result in deficiencies, especially if the horse is a picky eater.
How Much Rice Bran To Feed A Horse
How Much Rice Bran To Feed A Horse? Stabilized rice bran is generally palatable and easily accepted. Start feeding a small amount to a maximum of 4 lb per day. Consider consulting an equine nutritionist prior to instituting any dietary change, and discuss all components of the diet, including supplements, to ensure you are not double dipping.
How do you feed rice bran to horses? Adding a few ounces of rice bran to help make a meal or supplement more palatable is fine. One cup by volume of rice bran is about a pound of feed by weight. You should be able to safely substitute up to one cup rice bran.
Can you feed too much rice bran to horses? Raw rice bran should not be fed to horses due to palatability problems and digestive upset which may result from rancid fat or spoilage.
How much bran should I feed my horse? Wheat bran is very palatable and provides energy and protein at levels similar to oats. Small amounts can be fed on a daily basis in the regular ration, but it should not be fed at a rate of more than 10% of the total diet .

Rice Bran`s Ups And Downs For Horses
- Original: Oct 1, 2007
About 25 years ago, a stabilization process was developed that prevented high-fat rice bran from becoming rancid and preserved its natural properties.
Since then, rice bran has become a darling in equine nutrition, as a lower carbohydrate grain substitute , as a fat source and as a supplementary source of soluble fiber, vitamin E and other naturally occurring antioxidants. By adding some calcium, manufacturers correct the drawback of an inverted calcium-to- phosphorus ratio.
All these things are true, but lets look at them a little more closely:
Lower soluble carbohydrate is not low enough for many carb-sensitive horses. At an average 25% sugar and starch, its way too high for some.
Lower soluble carbohydrate doesnt necessarily mean low calorie. Because of the high fat, the calorie level is similar to plain oats. In fact, many rice-bran-based products have fat added on top of the naturally present level, making them weight-gain products.
Stabilized rice bran is a rich natural source of fat, including essential fatty acids, but the balance is heavily in favor of the omega-6 fatty acids, not the omega-3s that are lacking in diets not based on fresh pasture grasses.
Rice bran is something most horses find palatable. It can be a good way to get extra calories into a picky eater or an older horse with trouble chewing hard feeds and hays.
