The Ulcerative Colitis Diet

1. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Studies have found that an omega-3 fatty acid called eicosapentaenoic acid has the power to fight inflammation. It blocks certain chemicals in your body called leukotrienes. A benefit of fish oil is its a good source of EPA, and in some tests, people benefited from very high doses of it.

A 2010 case report published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine evaluated a 38-year-old woman who had ulcerative colitis and used omega-3 fatty acids as part of her treatment. In 1998, at the age of 27, she went to the emergency department after 10 days of bloody diarrhea and lower abdominal cramping pain. She described up to 15 bowel motions daily with urgency, and she lost approximately six pounds. She was also clinically dehydrated.

After weeks of various treatments that only led to short-term results, the patient turned to omega-3 fatty acid treatments. The EPA and DHA doses were well-tolerated and had no side effects. Her bowel frequency slowly decreased, and within a week all rectal bleeding had resolved. The woman continued to take one gram of omega-3s and 2.4 grams of mesalazine, an anti-inflammatory medication that did not have the same reactions when given alone. The patient went into remission after adding omega-3s into her diet.

2. Probiotics

  • High-fiber foods.

In addition to the problem foods listed above, infants, children and teenagers can also experience issues with:

  • Dairy products.

You may hear the term complementary medicine and wonder what its all about. Can it help treat my IBD? Will it alleviate my symptoms?

Complementary medicine includes a variety of treatment options that are not considered conventional medicine. We can help by breaking down the most common types of complementary medicine therapies so that you and your healthcare team can discuss what options may work best alongside your conventional treatment.

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health provides the following evolving definitions:

  • Complementary: If a non-mainstream practice is used together with conventional medicine

  • Alternative: If a nonmainstream practice is used in place ofconventional medicine

  • Integrative: Brings conventional and complementary approaches together in a coordinated way.

More research is needed on the role of complementary medicine in IBD. Some studies have shown that complementary medicine may help to control symptoms and ease pain, contribute to a better quality of life, and improve your mood and general attitude toward your health and well-being. Some therapies may even have positive effects on your immune system. However, complementary medicine will not cure your disease and it should not replace conventional therapies.

Root Cause Drivers Of Ibd

Once the IBD patient is in remission then the next step that we need to determine is what is driving that inflammatory response. Looking at the literature we can see that both genetics and environmental triggers are responsible. IBD is very much recognised as an autoimmune disease these days.

The gut microbiota may also be playing a strong role in driving the inflammatory response in many IBD patients.

Get Regular Exercise To Reduce Uc Inflammation

Snider says exercise is useful in managing many of the complications associated with ulcerative colitis, including decreased bone density, a weakened immune system, emotional health problems, stress, and weight gain.

Try to engage in a moderate-intensity exercise like swimming or biking, three or four days per week, he says. A review published in August 2016 in Pharmacological Reports noted that moderate exercise releases protective myokines such as irisin from working skeletal muscles, which promotes healing and helps with inflammatory bowel disease inflammation.

Snider also strongly recommends yoga as a natural treatment for ulcerative colitis, as it promotes relaxation and targets the digestive system, flooding the area with oxygen and nutrition for healing. Find what type and frequency of exercise works for you and take it slow: Too much exercise can cause mild systemic inflammation.

Research indicates that stress plays a role in inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. Researchers analyzed data on 2,007 adults in a Swiss IBD study and found a relationship between depression and anxiety and disease symptoms. The results were published in June 2016 in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Counteract stress with relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation to help your body relax.

Ibd Treatments Assess And Treat The Microbiota

There is no one size fits all in inflammatory bowel disease.

One persons trigger may not be anothers. We have to take into account the genetics that predispose someone to inflammatory bowel disease as well as the environmental triggers.

Today we have discussed bacterial overgrowths in the large bowel as one possible environmental trigger that may be driving your inflammatory bowel disease.

Each individual IBD patients microbiota needs to be assessed and then treated in a tailored, individual way, based on the results. Often the goal is to reduce the pro-inflammatory bacteria and increase the anti-inflammatory bacteria. Balancing and modulating the inflammatory response is key. The end goal of this process is to eliminate, or significantly reduce the triggers that push a patient into an active flare of IBD.

Different tools to modulate the gut microbiota include diet, prebiotics and probiotics. We can use very targeted herbal medicines to treat the results of the test and the patients presenting symptoms.

Clinical Trials For Uc

Clinical trials are studies that use people to test new forms of treatment. A person can sign up for a clinical trial as long as they meet the criteria for the study. Before signing up, they should talk with a doctor about the possible risks and benefits of joining an investigational study.

People who are interested in joining a study can also talk with a doctor to see if they know of any upcoming studies they may qualify for. Interested people can also visit ClinicalTrials.gov to find UC studies across the country.

Drawbacks Of Conventional Treatment Approaches

The pharmacological therapies used for UC are associated with one or more side effects, which render them unsuitable for regular use. The conventional therapy is the treatment regimen, which is widely accepted and used by most of the healthcare professionals. The main adverse effects reported after using conventional therapy of UC include fever, nausea, headache, kidney damage, myopathy, myalgia, edema, neoplasia, congestive heart failure, tuberculosis, tremor, and hirsutism . Side effects observed on using 5-aminosalicylates include bronchitis, arthralgia, headache, dizziness, abdominal cramps, and minor metabolic disorders . Corticosteroids, though effective for UC when immediate remission is required, are also not free from side effects. The significant adverse effects of corticosteroids include edema, moon face, acne, mood disturbances, adrenal suppression, congenital fetal abnormalities, cushingoid face, gastric ulceration, and osteoporosis. Moreover, their long-term use may cause ocular side effects because of steroid-induced cataract and hyperglycemia, and chances of severe relapse have also been reported . The safety profile of biologicals has also been studied. Their side effects include leukoencephalopathy, hypersensitivity, myalgia, neoplasia, congestive heart failure, tuberculosis, and malaise . The most common side effects of immunosuppressants are hepatitis, pancreatitis, bone marrow toxicity, and leukopenia .

Alternative treatment for ulcerative colitis

Dr. David Williams

Ulcerative colitis is a serious inflammation of the lower bowel. This inflammatory bowel disease seems to be hereditary and usually begins between the ages of 15 and 40. Ulcerative colitis is rare in most populations that havent adopted the typical Western diet that is high in refined carbohydrates and fats and low in fiber. And in some cases, ulcerative colitis has been linked to allergic reactions to certain foods. Corn, wheat, and milk products seem to be the most common culprits.

With ulcerative colitis, the inflammation of the lower bowel surface often results in ulcerations that lead to profuse bleeding, along with other symptoms including severe, chronic diarrhea and bloody, mucus-laden stools. If the condition persists, the individual will suffer from fat, protein, vitamin, and mineral deficiencies. If ulcerative colitis continues for 10 years or more, studies have shown the risk of developing colon cancer is almost 200 times greater than that of the general population.

Most doctors in this country rely on powerful drugs to treat ulcerative colitis, even though their side effects can be substantial and their success rate is relatively low.

My plan below, however, consists of proven all-natural therapies, along with a few additional alternative remedies to try for especially stubborn cases. Of course, because ulcerative colitis can turn severe in some instances, it should always be monitored by a doctor.

  • Is my child growing at a normal rate?
  • What can I do to help my child cope at school?

A note from Cleveland Clinic

When you have ulcerative colitis, its essential to work closely with your healthcare team.

Take your medications as prescribed, even when you dont have symptoms. Skipping medications youre supposed to take can lead to flareups and make the disease harder to control. Your best shot at managing ulcerative colitis is to follow your treatment plan and talk to your healthcare provider regularly.

IBD is an area where promising discoveries and potential new treatments are emerging often. For example, trials have been conducted on the effectiveness of fecal transplants, in which healthy stool is transplanted into an inflamed large intestine in hopes of restoring the balance of healthy bacteria. Other exciting paper writing findings involve stem cell research.
