Is Bananas Good For Arthritis

There is no one definitive answer to this question as everyoneâs experience with arthritis is different. Some people find that bananas help alleviate their arthritis symptoms while others find that they have no effect. If you are considering adding bananas to your diet to help with your arthritis, it is best to speak with your doctor first to ensure that they are safe for you to eat.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 54 million Americans have arthritis. Arthritis is a term that refers to a number of disorders, including osteoarthritis, gout, lupus, and fibromyalgia, among others. Certain foods, particularly those high in fat, sugar, and high-fructose corn syrup, are more likely to contribute to this condition. Potassium is found in bananas, which can aid in pain relief and inflammation relief. Approximately 9.4 ounces of this mineral is required for 10 percent of the recommended daily intake. According to Arthritis Foundation research, the Mediterranean diet is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help alleviate arthritis symptoms.

Manuka Honey Fights Pathogens

It has been found that in cases of ulcerative colitis, which is an inflammatory bowel disease , there is a large concentration of a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori in their gastro intestinal tract.

This bacterium is known to cause autoimmunity, where the bodys immune system begins to destroy the cells of the body itself. Ulcerative colitis is believed to be an autoimmune disease that may be a result of genetics or some environmental factors.

H. pylori also makes the inner lining of the gastro-intestinal tract more permeable and hence more vulnerable to pathogens and infections. H. pylori has been found to be sensitive to the honey. This is because the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in the honey, which is about 20%.

Honey can act as a bacteriostatic and it can also be bactericidal at different concentrations. 5 to 11% of concentration of Manuka honey proves to be bacteriostatic, whereas 8 to 15% of concentration is found to be bactericidal.

These are achieved because of the high sugar content of the honey. As the solute concentration is higher in the honey than the solute concentration in bacteria, the water in the bacteria is drawn out. This limits the growth of bacteria.

Manuka honey has a low pH that is between 3 and 4.5, it is acidic and hence most microorganisms are unable to survive in such conditions

What does this mean?Manuka honey has the capability to control the growth of the bacteria that are responsible for causing ulcerative colitis.

Choose Fish With Omega

Pineapple and Digestion

Scientists have not yet come to a consensus about whether or not eating red meat has any effect on people with UC, but the nutrients in fish could be beneficial. Consuming foods like fatty fish, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, may help with UC-related inflammation, says Diekman.

Omega-3 fatty acids are a crucial nutrient your body uses to make cells and hormones that regulate blood clotting. While some studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, more research still needs to be done to prove theyre beneficial. According to the National Institutes of Health , omega-3 fatty acids, like probiotics, also support the immune system.

Unlike other fats, the body cant make this good fat on its own from other raw materials. Instead, you must get it from food sources, including fish like salmon, herring, sardines, rainbow trout, and mackerel just refrain from frying fillets, since fatty or greasy foods can exacerbate UC symptoms.

Instead, try baking or grilling fish, or try this recipe for UC-friendly salmon chowder.

Also remember that its especially important to make sure youre eating enough protein immediately after a flare-up to replace any lost nutrients and reduce the risk of anemia.

Pineapple Benefits For Digestive System

As for pineapple, like papaya, it is full of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Eating this fruit can help avoid bloating, constipation, and diarrhea. It also can help remove intestinal worms.

Additionally, pineapple contains bromelain, a digestive enzyme only found in pineapple, that provides many health benefits like supporting gut health. This enzyme can also help fight digestive diseases by reducing inflammation in the intestine, thus preventing diarrhea. Furthermore, because bromelain can help protein digestion, eating pineapple can help people with indigestion problems caused by eating protein-rich meals.

May Help Your Digestion

The enzymes in pineapple juice function as proteases. Proteases help break down protein into smaller subunits, such as amino acids and small peptides, which can then be more easily absorbed in your gut .

Bromelain, a group of enzymes in pineapple juice, may particularly help improve digestion in people whose pancreas cannot make enough digestive enzymes a medical condition known as pancreatic insufficiency .

Animal research suggests that bromelain may also help protect your gut from harmful, diarrhea-causing bacteria, such as E. coli and V. cholera .

Moreover, according to some test-tube research, bromelain may help reduce gut inflammation in people with inflammatory bowel disorders, such as Crohns disease or ulcerative colitis .

That said, most studies have investigated the effect of concentrated doses of bromelain, rather than that of pineapple juice, and very few were conducted in humans. Therefore, more research is needed.

Summary

The bromelain in pineapple juice may aid digestion, guard against harmful, diarrhea-causing bacteria, and reduce inflammation in people with inflammatory bowel disorders. However, more research is needed.

Celery Juice Provides Beneficial Antioxidants

Like other plant foods, celery juice contains phytonutrients such as phenolic acid and flavonoids, says Palumbo. And phytonutrients, which have antioxidant properties like preventing cell damage, should be an important part of your diet, notes MedlinePlus.

A November 2015 review in Molecules suggests that eating a diet rich in phytonutrients may lower your odds of developing certain diseases. That said, just drinking celery juice alone likely wont give you all the phytonutrients you need, says Palumbo. Youll have to eat other fruit and vegetables, too.

A person who drinks 16 oz of celery juice each morning might think, Well, I am done for the day in terms of getting in all my vegetables and fruit, says Palumbo. But thats not ideal because people need to eat a variety of vegetables and fruit to get all the phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals, and more that help keep them healthy.

Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disease. Research studies have found that Turmeric regulated the activity of the immune system which can be useful for patients suffering from ulcerative colitis.

In an experimental study carried out on animals, published in the journal of international pharmacology in 2008, the effect of curcumin on major T cells, natural killer cells and macrophages were evaluated.

The results suggested that curcumin injection does not impair cytotoxic function of the immune system cells. The study concluded that curcumin modulates the immune system and is safe for consumption.

Another study published in the journal of clinical immunology in 2007 suggested that curcumin acts as an immunomodulatory agent by modulating the expression of T cells, B cells, natural killer cells, macrophages, and dendritic cells.

Curcumin downregulates the expression of proinflammatory cytokines. The study concluded that curcumin can be used as a potential therapy for immune disorders.

What does this mean?Turmeric consumption can be helpful in treatment of autoimmune disorders like ulcerative colitis as turmeric has the ability to downregulate the expression of proinflammatory cytokines and modulate other cells of the immune system like macrophages, B cells and T cells.

Peppermint Tea Helps Irritable Bowel Syndrome Unproven For Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Many of us have trouble keeping IBS distinct from IBD . They are, however, totally different disorders. IBD, which includes Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis, is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the digestive tract. Over the long term, the intestines become damaged and people suffer complications. IBS, on the other hand, is considered a functional GI disorder, meaning there is no obvious damage to the intestines. Just to make the confusion more complete, the symptoms are as similar as the abbreviations. People suffering with stomachaches and diarrhea could have either condition. Could peppermint tea help soothe any of this discomfort?
