How To Get Rid Of Stomach Ulcer? Dr.Berg On Peptic Ulcer Treatment

The idea that ulcers can be caused by taking over-the-counter pain relievers may come as a surprise to people who have long believed that diet and stress are major factors.

Dingell, a self-described junk food queen and Diet Coke addict, who typically drinks 10 to 12 bottles a day, said she anticipated being told by her doctors that she would need to make changes to her diet. But, experts said, the belief that certain foods and carbonated or acidic beverages can cause or worsen ulcers is a common misconception.

Either of those can cause abdominal pain for different reasons, Stevoff said. A lot of times, people equate their abdominal pain with having an ulcer.

Your gastrointestinal tract only has a limited amount of ways to express its displeasure, Staller said, such as nausea, vomiting, a sour stomach or indigestion, pain and bowel symptoms. It can be challenging for laypeople and doctors to determine whats causing symptoms, and its common to confuse another gastrointestinal malady, such as indigestion, with ulcers, he said. The vast majority of patients with indigestion that Staller performs endoscopies on dont have an ulcer when we look, he added.

Do Nsaid Induced Ulcers Heal On Their Own

Male, 33 years old, 6 feet, no medications

Let me preface this with I was taking lots of Ibuprofen of up to 16 200mg pills per day for a period of close to 8 months of more. Sometimes I would taken these pills at night or in the morning on a empty stomach. After realizing how bad it was for my stomach I switched to Tylenol only.

My main symptom right now is gas needing to be released from my stomach via burping. The air immediately needs expelling when I wake up or get up from laying down. I also have excessive burping after any snacks or meals. I try to watch what I eat but fatty foods and red sauce seem to make it worse. It may not sound horrible but its really annoying and more excessive than you might imagine.

I tested negative for H Pylori, but I understand NSAID induced ulcers dont have this bacteria present. My GI said that ulcers created by NSAIDs should heal on their own if the medication that caused them is removed. Is this true? I dont seem to be getting better.

What If An Ulcer Doesnt Heal Or Comes Back After Treatment

Taking medicines and treating the underlying cause heals most ulcers. However, if your ulcer doesnt heal or comes back after treatment, your doctor may

  • check for and treat any factors that could be causing the ulcer, such as an H. pylori infection.
  • recommend you quit smoking, if you smoke. Smoking can slow ulcer healing.
  • recommend or prescribe more medicines to help heal the ulcer.

Caring For Venous Ulcers

  • 1Seek out a medical professional for compression therapy. Your doctor or nurse practitioner will start by clearing out all debris and dead tissue from the ulcer and apply a simple, non-stick dressing. They will then apply a compression bandage over the affected leg. Dressing and bandages typically need to be changed once a week.XTrustworthy SourceNational Health Service Public healthcare system of the UKGo to source
  • Your medical professional may be able to show you how to change and wrap your bandages so that you do not need to revisit them on a weekly basis.
  • If your ulcer is still healing, initial compression may hurt. Talk to your nurse or doctor about an appropriate pain management program to help you deal with any discomfort.
  • 2Keep your legs elevated to reduce swelling. Venous ulcers can lead to fluid buildup in your legs, which can cause your feet and ankles to swell. Keep your legs elevated whenever you can. If possible, keep your ankles at the same elevation as your eyes. A note from Cleveland Clinic

Stomach ulcers are common and treatable, but they should be taken seriously. Even when they dont cause symptoms, they arent a good sign. A stomach ulcer means that your natural stomach acid is overwhelming your protective stomach lining. Thats a situation that can only get worse if it isnt managed. Lifestyle changes may help, but youll still need to treat the underlying cause. Its probably either NSAID use or a common bacterial infection. Your healthcare provider can help prescribe the right medicines for your condition.

What Is The Treatment For Ulcers

If you have ulcer symptoms, see your doctor. Prompt treatment can prevent excessive bleeding and other complications.

Ulcers are usually diagnosed after an upper GI endoscopy . An endoscope is a long flexible tube with a light and camera on the end. The tube is inserted into your throat, then to the esophagus, stomach, and upper part of the small intestine. Learn how to prepare for an endoscopy here.

Generally performed as an outpatient procedure, it allows the doctor to locate and identify problems in the stomach and upper intestine.

Bleeding ulcers must be addressed quickly, and treatment can start during the initial endoscopy. If bleeding from ulcers is found during the endoscopy, the doctor can:

    • inject medication directly
    • cauterize the ulcer to stop the bleeding
    • clamp off the bleeding vessel

If you have an ulcer, youll be tested for H. pylori. This can be done using a tissue sample taken during the endoscopy. It can also be accomplished with noninvasive tests such as a stool sample or breath test.

If you have the infection, antibiotics and other drugs can help fight the bacteria and ease symptoms. To be certain you get rid of it, you must finish taking the medication as directed, even if your symptoms stop.

If your ulcers are the result of taking too many NSAIDs, work with your doctor to find another medication to treat pain.

Over-the-counter antacids sometimes relieve symptoms. Ask your doctor if its okay to take antacids.

Fruits Vegetables Whole Grains And Other Foods High In Fibre Can Prevent Ulcers

Add another star to fibres crown. Besides keeping you regular, fibre has a role in keeping ulcers at bay, especially those in the duodenum. A number of studies have found that people who eat high-fibre diets have a lower risk of developing ulcers. In the Physicians Health Study from Harvard, researchers looked at the diets of 47,806 men and found that those who ate 11 grams or more of fibre from vegetables had a 32 per cent lower risk of developing duodenal ulcers.

Scientists arent sure how fibre helps, but it may be thanks to the fact that it slows the emptying of the stomach and thus reduces the amount of time the stomach lining and duodenum are exposed to digestive acids. Soluble fibre, the kind found in oats, beans, barley, peas, and pears, also forms a slippery goo in the stomach that acts as a barrier between the stomach lining and corrosive stomach acids.

Recommended dose: General health guidelines suggest getting 25 to 35 grams of fibre a day.

What Are The Complications Of Peptic Ulcers

Ulcers can cause serious problems if you dont get treatment.

    The most common problems include:

    • Bleeding. As an ulcer wears away the muscles of the stomach or duodenal wall, blood vessels may be hurt. This causes bleeding.
    • Hole . Sometimes an ulcer makes a hole in the wall of your stomach or duodenum. When this happens, bacteria and partly digested food can get in. This causes infection and redness or swelling .
    • Narrowing and blockage . Ulcers that are found where the duodenum joins the stomach can cause swelling and scarring. This can narrow or even block the opening to the duodenum. Food cant leave your stomach and go into your small intestine. This causes vomiting. You cant eat properly.

Adjust Your Dosage To Reduce Risk Of Side Effects

    Stomach Ulcer | Nucleus Health

It’s best to take the lowest dosage of NSAID necessary to relieve your symptoms. Using the lowest effective dose reduces the risk of side effects.

Another suggestion for you to considerwith your healthcare provider’s approvalis to take your NSAID as needed, rather than daily. By doing soand keeping your dose lowyou would be reducing the risk of serious side effects.

That said, be sure to take your medication as directed. If you have questions, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

How Do Doctors Treat An Nsaid

If NSAIDs are causing your peptic ulcer and you dont have an H. pylori infection, your doctor may tell you to

    • stop taking the NSAID
    • reduce how much of the NSAID you take
    • switch to another medicine that wont cause a peptic ulcer

Your doctor may also prescribe medicines to reduce stomach acid and coat and protect your peptic ulcer. Proton pump inhibitors , histamine receptor blockers, and protectants can help relieve pain and help your ulcer heal.

    How Are Peptic Ulcers Treated

Treatment will depend on the type of ulcer you have. Your healthcare provider will create a care plan for you based on what is causing your ulcer.

Treatment can include making lifestyle changes, taking medicines, or in some cases having surgery.

    Lifestyle changes may include:

    • Not eating certain foods. Avoid any foods that make your symptoms worse.
    • Quitting smoking. Smoking can keep your ulcer from healing. It is also linked to ulcers coming back after treatment.
    • Limiting alcohol and caffeine. They can make your symptoms worse.
    • Not using NSAIDs . These include aspirin and ibuprofen.

Medicines to treat ulcers may include:

    • Antibiotics. These bacteria-fighting medicines are used to kill the H. pylori bacteria. Often a mix of antibiotics and other medicines is used to cure the ulcer and get rid of the infection.
    • H2-blockers . These reduce the amount of acid your stomach makes by blocking the hormone histamine. Histamine helps to make acid.
    • Proton pump inhibitors or PPIs. These lower stomach acid levels and protect the lining of your stomach and duodenum.
    • Mucosal protective agents. These medicines protect the stomach’s mucus lining from acid damage so that it can heal.
    • Antacids. These quickly weaken or neutralize stomach acid to ease your symptoms.

In most cases, medicines can heal ulcers quickly. Once the H. pylori bacteria is removed, most ulcers do not come back.

    Why Nsaids Can Cause Ulcers

NSAIDs can cause ulcers by interfering with the stomach’s ability to protect itself from gastric acids. While these acids are vital to the digestive process, they can cause damage if the protective barriers of the stomach are compromised.

Normally, the stomach has three protections against gastric acid:

    • Mucus produced by foveolar cells that line the stomach
    • Bicarbonate produced by foveolar cells, which helps neutralize stomach acid
    • Blood circulation that aids in the repair and renewal of cells in the stomachs mucosal layer

NSAIDs slow the production of protective mucus in the stomach and change its structure.

A class of lipids made by the body called prostaglandins have an effect on pain receptors. NSAIDs work to reduce pain by blocking the enzymes that are involved in the production of certain prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are also protective in the mucosal layer of the stomach, and when they are depleted, there can be a break in that layer.

The suppression of the body’s natural defenses against gastric acids can lead to inflammation in the stomach lining. Over time, this can cause the rupture of a capillary blood vessel, causing bleeding and the development of an open, ulcerative sore in the mucosal lining.

Are There Secondary Benefits Of Using Cbd For Ulcers

It may take years before we know CBDs impact on stomach ulcers. However, theres a great deal of evidence that CBD oil could help manage many of the symptoms related to this painful condition.

Indeed, one reason people gravitate towards CBD oil is its anti-pain properties. Many trials suggest taking CBD internally or externally could reduce swelling. CBDs anti-inflammatory properties should help decrease the severity of ulcers and promote a faster recovery.

Customers should also remember that CBD oil has natural anti-anxiety properties. Indeed, one of the leading reasons people try CBD for the first time is to decrease stress. Many scientific reports show theres a psychological component related to ulcers. If a person is stressed, theyre more likely to develop a peptic ulcer. Therefore, if CBD could reduce anxiety levels, there should be a lower risk someone would experience an ulcer in the first place.

    Burning Pain In The Abdomen

Persistent burning pain in the abdomen is one of the first signs of a stomach ulcer. The sensation of pain occurs when juices in the stomach, which help in digestion, come into contact with an open sore in the stomach lining.

In most cases, the pain is felt from the breast bone to the navel, and it often worsens during the night. If you skip meals, particularly breakfast, you may also experience this burning sensation in the stomach during the daytime.

If the dull and burning ache of the ulcer often turns into a sharp, stabbing pain, it is a sign that your ulcer is acting up and you need medical help. It could mean that the ulcer has caused a more critical problem like a perforation in the wall of your stomach or intestine, or a blockage in your digestive tract, and it is triggering intense pain.

    What Are The Possible Complications

The FASTEST Way to Heal an Ulcer

An untreated ulcer that swells or scars can block your digestive tract. It can also perforate your stomach or small intestine, infecting your abdominal cavity. That causes a condition known as peritonitis.

A bleeding ulcer can lead to anemia, bloody vomit, or bloody stools. A bleeding ulcer usually results in a hospital stay. Severe internal bleeding is life-threatening. Perforation or serious bleeding may require surgical intervention.

    Tips For Living With Ulcers

    • If you have an ulcer, be careful when choosing over-the-counter pain relievers. Aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen can irritate an ulcer and prevent a bleeding ulcer from healing. Avoid powdered headache medication, too. It usually contains powdered aspirin. Your best choice may be acetaminophen, which doesnât cause or worsen stomach ulcers.
    • Donât overdose on iron supplements. You may need them if you have bleeding ulcers, but taking too much can irritate your stomach lining and the ulcer. Ask the doctor how much iron you need.
    • Learn how to manage stress. Relaxation techniques like deep breathing, guided imagery, and moderate exercise can help ease stress and promote healing.
    • Avoid foods that irritate your stomach. Use common sense: If it upsets your stomach when you eat it, avoid it. Everyone is different, but spicy foods, citrus fruits, and fatty foods are common irritants.
    • Stop smoking. Heavy smokers are more likely to get duodenal ulcers than nonsmokers.
    • Practice moderation. Drinking lots of alcohol has been shown to contribute to ulcers, so keep your intake to a minimum.

Patients With No Gastrointestinal Risk And With Cardiovascular Risk

For patients with cardiovascular risk but low GI risk, naproxen may offer advantages not present in other NSAIDs. If the patient is intolerant or finds naproxen ineffective, selection of an NSAID that does not interact with aspirin is essential. Ibuprofen is thus contraindicated. Choices include low-dose celecoxib, which has not been implicated as carrying cardiovascular concerns at high or multiple daily doses. Diclofenac may also be considered. Concomitant treatment with a PPI, as appropriate, should be strongly considered in patients taking any NSAID and aspirin, since the risk of ulcer bleeding in patients taking multiple agents is increased.

Stomach Ulcer Diagnosis And Conventional Treatment

If you suspect you have a stomach ulcer, see your doctor to first rule out other causes of your pain. In order to diagnose a stomach ulcer, your doctor may perform an endoscopy, which allows the doctor to view the inside lining of the esophagus, stomach and small intestine. Once a diagnosis is verified, treatment options can begin.

Your doctor will likely take your medical history and perform a physical exam along with a blood test, plus ask you about your past use of medications and possibly do an X-ray to locate a stomach ulcer. Testing the blood for H. pylori, plus doing a urea breath test and/or stool test to look for the presence of H. pylori antigens, are common ways to diagnose an ulcer.

The goal of stomach ulcer treatments is to help reduce pain and inflammation in the digestive tract, boost the immune system to fight H. pylori bacteria, prevent complications, and lower the chance for future ulcers from forming or returning.
