Does Aloe Vera Juice Help Horses With Ulcers

What I Feed My Horse! It’s MADNESS!

Horses can get ulcers for various reasons so, by inference, there are various ways to help this. Research on aloe vera has shown its gastrointestinal effect as well as its effect on wound healing. Gastric ulcers in horses occur in various places and to various depths. In the wrong place or to a significant depth and aloe vera will not be enough to deliver a positive outcome. It does not matter whether you use aloe vera juice, aloe vera gel or aloe vera powder. A Consultant Gastroenterologist co-designed the processing of Aloeride aloe vera, so abandon the idea that juice or gel would be superior. The lower part of your horses stomach mixes chyme by its muscle action and that is how aloe vera working molecules make contact with the stomach wall. Aloe Vera Juice Or Omeprazole

To determine whether aloe vera is a good choice for horses or not, research is conducted on horses with EGUS. A total of 39 horses that had one or more types of ulcers were taken. These horses were offered omeprazole and aloe vera. Some findings found were:

  • Ulcers are more common in the squamous portion of the horses stomach compared to the glandular portion.
  • Of those 39 horses, 85% of the horses that get omeprazole have improved ulcers. And 56% of those offered aloe vera have improved stomach ulcers.
  • Omeprazole shows higher cure rates compared to aloe vera.

The research continued for four weeks, and the inner gel of the aloe vera leaf was administered to the horses at a rate of 17.6 mg/kg twice daily. Omeprazole paste was administered at a 4 mg/kg rate once a day to horses suffering from EGUS.

Although the treatment results with aloe vera were inferior to those of omeprazole, still half of the horses have improved their health. According to Crandell, the aloe vera treatment used in that research rapidly neutralizes gastric acid. It also protects the inner part of the stomach, and promotes a normal gastric environment.

What Are The Side Effects Of Aloe Vera

Side effects of aloe vera are uncommon. The risk of side effects may vary based on the form of aloe vera and whether it is applied to the skin or taken orally.

For example, aloe vera gel appears to be associated with fewer adverse reactions than aloe vera whole leaf extract and aloe latex. The gel has been associated with skin discomfort, pain, and dermatitis in some individuals. Overall, adverse reactions with aloe vera gel appear uncommon and non-severe.

Gastric Ulcers In Horses

Texchange at Yarn Expo, Shangai, China. Oct,2014.

Ulcers are unfortunately very common in horses especially in performance horses. It is estimated that up to 90% of horses have gastric ulcers.

Gastric ulcers are painful lesions in the stomach lining that can contribute to aggression, girthiness, and poor performance. Ulcers can also lead to other problems including poor nutrient absorption, weight loss and poor coat quality.

Horses evolved to spend the majority of their time grazing for food and consuming high-fibre forages. Therefore, they evolved to constantly produce gastric acid.

However, in modern management practices, horses are more prone to ulcers due to intermittent feeding and/or limited access to forage. This creates periods of time when the stomach is empty and unbuffered acid comes into direct contact with the intestinal wall.

Exercising your horse on an empty stomach can also cause so-called splash ulcers as gastric acid splashes into the upper part of the stomach.

Horses most commonly develop ulcers in the squamous non-glandular region of the stomach. This is the upper region that does not naturally have a protective barrier between the stomach lining and the stomach acid.

Ulcers can also develop in the lower, glandular region of the stomach. However, ulcers are less common here as this area naturally produces mucins to form a protective barrier and bicarbonate to buffer the stomach acid.

And In The Other Corner: Prebiotics

If probiotics are getting all the attention right now, prebiotics are waiting in the wing for their 15 minutes of fame. Think of prebiotics as the behind-the-scenes supporters. They work by providing the building blocks for probiotics to grow and do their thing. As for where youll find them, start with fresh fruits and vegetables, including onions, garlic, bananas, and artichokes.

Why Doesnt Aloeride Have This Seal Of Approval

Imagine that you are an aircraft manufacturer. You shall want to attach wings that wont fall off at say 20,000 feet. British Standards help you identify nuts and bolts that will withstand pressures at 20,000 feet. Useful if not essential

When it comes to Standards in aloe vera land, in 1981 one American manufacturer helped institute a Seal Of Approval that created the illusion of Standards. That same company was the first in the world to receive this Seal of Approval, something that wouldnt have been possible under British Law. It is probably fair to say that every educational institution on the planet believes that self-accreditation doesnt properly reflect academic or scientific achievement.

Subsequently a very misleading public statement was broadcast: the Certification Seal represents the only way to validate an aloe vera product to the world market and to quality-minded consumers. We authorised accredited, independent laboratories to measure the industry-standard value for working consituents in two products that carry this Seal Of Approval. Spot the variations and youll understand why their statement was and is misleading.

Research studies in animal models, humans and cell culture have shown several effects including:

  • Antioxidant activity: Anthraquinones are phenolic compounds that bind free radicals to prevent them from causing damage to tissues.
  • Antimicrobial activity: Aloe-emodin is an anthraquinone that inhibits proliferation of pathogenic microbes such as those of the genus Clostridium or Streptococcus
  • Prebiotic activity: The polysaccharide acemannan can feed beneficial microorganisms to increase production of short-chain fatty acids that can be used as an energy source by the animal and alter microbial composition
  • Antidiabetic: Polysaccharides in aloe vera have been shown to decrease blood sugar levels in animal models and improve the health of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas
  • Anticancer: In cell culture and animal models, aloe extracts reduce cell proliferation and induce cell death, which helps shrink tumors
  • These benefits have mostly been demonstrated in animal models and cell lines using high doses of gel extract. More research is required in horses to verify these effects.

    Understanding Ulcer Medication For Horses

    Red Cloud

When it comes to treating Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome, several good options exist, but the specific type of drug/medication and length of treatment your veterinarian prescribes will likely depend on the exact location in the stomach, as well as the severity of ulceration.

Latsons business partner, equine internal medicine veterinary specialist, Dr. Robert Franklin, explains that the horses stomach is divided into two halves: the top, which is called non-glandular and the bottom, referred to as glandular.

The non-glandular region is typically the area affected by ulceration, says Franklin. This region typically responds well to treatment.

GastroGard and UlcerGard, which both contain the active ingredient omeprazole, are the two main drugs veterinarians tend to use for non-glandular ulcers.

They work about 80% of the time in a 4-week treatment period, notes Franklin.

However, Franklin goes on to explain that a glandular ulcer does not heal nearly as easily and doesn’t always respond to the typical treatments, so veterinarians often have to rely on a different strategy when treating these types of ulcers.

Weve used sucralfate in combination with omeprazole to manage glandular ulcers. Some more recent studies have shown that another drug called misoprostol is likely the best treatment for this type.

The result of the study shows a significant reduction in the GERD symptoms at an interval of both 2 and 4 weeks of treatment in all the groups.

The aloe vera group showed a reduction in all the GERD symptoms at both 2 weeks and 4 weeks as compared with the baseline or untreated patients.

In the omeprazole and ranitidine group, the frequency of all assessed symptoms of GERD was also reduced significantly compared with the data recorded at the start.

A trend in the increased frequency of heartburn was seen in all the groups at 4th week as compared to that at 2nd week.

Adverse events resulting in two drop-outs each from omeprazole and ranitidine groups while no drop-out took place from the aloe vera group.

This indicates that the side effects from the omeprazole and ranitidine were intolerable to the patients as compared to the relief these chemicals give.

While aloe vera show the least side effects and these few side effects were comparably tolerable.
