Aloe Vera Juice Or Omeprazole
To determine whether aloe vera is a good choice for horses or not, research is conducted on horses with EGUS. A total of 39 horses that had one or more types of ulcers were taken. These horses were offered omeprazole and aloe vera. Some findings found were:
- Ulcers are more common in the squamous portion of the horses stomach compared to the glandular portion.
- Of those 39 horses, 85% of the horses that get omeprazole have improved ulcers. And 56% of those offered aloe vera have improved stomach ulcers.
- Omeprazole shows higher cure rates compared to aloe vera.
The research continued for four weeks, and the inner gel of the aloe vera leaf was administered to the horses at a rate of 17.6 mg/kg twice daily. Omeprazole paste was administered at a 4 mg/kg rate once a day to horses suffering from EGUS.
Although the treatment results with aloe vera were inferior to those of omeprazole, still half of the horses have improved their health. According to Crandell, the aloe vera treatment used in that research rapidly neutralizes gastric acid. It also protects the inner part of the stomach, and promotes a normal gastric environment.

What Are The Side Effects Of Aloe Vera
Side effects of aloe vera are uncommon. The risk of side effects may vary based on the form of aloe vera and whether it is applied to the skin or taken orally.
For example, aloe vera gel appears to be associated with fewer adverse reactions than aloe vera whole leaf extract and aloe latex. The gel has been associated with skin discomfort, pain, and dermatitis in some individuals. Overall, adverse reactions with aloe vera gel appear uncommon and non-severe.

Ulcers are unfortunately very common in horses especially in performance horses. It is estimated that up to 90% of horses have gastric ulcers.
Gastric ulcers are painful lesions in the stomach lining that can contribute to aggression, girthiness, and poor performance. Ulcers can also lead to other problems including poor nutrient absorption, weight loss and poor coat quality.
Horses evolved to spend the majority of their time grazing for food and consuming high-fibre forages. Therefore, they evolved to constantly produce gastric acid.
However, in modern management practices, horses are more prone to ulcers due to intermittent feeding and/or limited access to forage. This creates periods of time when the stomach is empty and unbuffered acid comes into direct contact with the intestinal wall.
Exercising your horse on an empty stomach can also cause so-called splash ulcers as gastric acid splashes into the upper part of the stomach.
Horses most commonly develop ulcers in the squamous non-glandular region of the stomach. This is the upper region that does not naturally have a protective barrier between the stomach lining and the stomach acid.
Ulcers can also develop in the lower, glandular region of the stomach. However, ulcers are less common here as this area naturally produces mucins to form a protective barrier and bicarbonate to buffer the stomach acid.

When it comes to treating Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome, several good options exist, but the specific type of drug/medication and length of treatment your veterinarian prescribes will likely depend on the exact location in the stomach, as well as the severity of ulceration.
Latsons business partner, equine internal medicine veterinary specialist, Dr. Robert Franklin, explains that the horses stomach is divided into two halves: the top, which is called non-glandular and the bottom, referred to as glandular.
The non-glandular region is typically the area affected by ulceration, says Franklin. This region typically responds well to treatment.
GastroGard and UlcerGard, which both contain the active ingredient omeprazole, are the two main drugs veterinarians tend to use for non-glandular ulcers.

However, Franklin goes on to explain that a glandular ulcer does not heal nearly as easily and doesn’t always respond to the typical treatments, so veterinarians often have to rely on a different strategy when treating these types of ulcers.

What Were The Results Of The Study
The result of the study shows a significant reduction in the GERD symptoms at an interval of both 2 and 4 weeks of treatment in all the groups.
The aloe vera group showed a reduction in all the GERD symptoms at both 2 weeks and 4 weeks as compared with the baseline or untreated patients.
In the omeprazole and ranitidine group, the frequency of all assessed symptoms of GERD was also reduced significantly compared with the data recorded at the start.
A trend in the increased frequency of heartburn was seen in all the groups at 4th week as compared to that at 2nd week.
Adverse events resulting in two drop-outs each from omeprazole and ranitidine groups while no drop-out took place from the aloe vera group.
This indicates that the side effects from the omeprazole and ranitidine were intolerable to the patients as compared to the relief these chemicals give.
While aloe vera show the least side effects and these few side effects were comparably tolerable.
