Aloe Vera For Ulcerative Colitis

Aloe vera is commonly thought of as a treatment for sunburns or skin conditions, but recent research shows aloe vera gel can also improve inflammatory bowel disease and ulcerative colitis .

The first records of aloe vera date back 6,000 years, showing the Egyptians were using it medicinally . There are two main parts to the aloe vera plant: the clear gel in the leaves and the green part of the leaf surrounding the gel. The green part is what is used in aloe juice or dried to form aloe latex. It is important to note the difference because the gel is anti-inflammatory and healing, while the latex is a powerful laxative . The gel form of aloe is what was used in the recent double blind placebo controlled study .

The researchers used the Simple Clinical Colitis Activity Index to determine the severity of ulcerative colitis. A score of 12 or higher indicates severe acute colitis requiring hospital admission. A score of less than 3 indicates inactive disease. The current research included participants with mildly to moderately active ulcerative colitis with a score greater than 3, but less than 12 .

Why There Aren’t More Studies On Aloe

Herbal remedies, in general, are difficult to study for several reasons. One reason is that it’s challenging to make sure every person in the trial is getting the same thing, because there can be variations in the quality of the product used.

There’s also a risk that, in some cases, other compounds could be present in the preparation of the substance being studied, which would make the results of the study suspect.

In these instances, it would be difficult to know how much aloe patients were receiving, or if any imperfections in the quality of the product were responsible for a response . There’s also the question of what the dosage should be to achieve an effect.

Another problem is that when patients are being given an herbal preparation, they might not be receiving any other type of treatments, which could have ethical consequences: What if patients don’t get any better with the herbal medicine?

Conversely, patients may be receiving another conventional therapy , and it would be difficult to know if a response was from the supplement or the drug. As a result, there are few studies on herbal remedies for diseases like IBD, and even fewer that specifically address the effect that aloe has on ulcerative colitis.

First Talk With Your Doctor

Natural therapies may sound harmless, but get a pro opinion before you try anything, advises Dr. Dupont. The most important thing is to go over anything youre thinking of taking with your doctor, he says. Many of them do have benefits and are safe, but some may have interactions with medications. Now is not the time to drop-kick your prescription, either. Complementary medicine should be used in conjunction with, not as a replacement for, conventional medicine, he adds. If you’re curious about trying supplements, here are few worth looking into.

It Has An Immunomodulatory Effect

Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune disorder , where the immune cells attack the cells of the colon and lead to the ulcerative conditions.

Aloe vera can be used as an immunomodulator, to stop such an immune response and induce the anti-inflammatory effect.

It is shown to block the immune response by inhibiting the expression of various factors responsible in the process and thus providing a new approach for the treatment of ulcerative colitis .

Aloe vera is shown to have two functionally and chemically distinct compounds which are shown to possess this immunomodulatory effect.

It reduces the activation, propagation and secretion of the immune cells in the blood and thus has a suppressive effect on the immune system.

What does this mean? The consumption of aloe vera has an immunomodulatory effect on the autoimmune condition and reduces the immune response which causes ulcerative colitis.
