Ulcerative Colitis symptoms are very similar to Crohns disease and IBS.

Ulcerative Colitis is often the term given to the generalised condition of inflammation the rectum or colon . Crohns disease however is diagnosed when there are several discrete and non-continuous patches of ulceration and inflammation, anywhere from the throat to the anus.

Ulcerative Colitis can go into remission for many years and then return.

Carbohydrates and sugars have been shown to promote the growth of yeast and bacteria in the intestines which causes imbalance, increasing the risk for Ulcerative Colitis. Eating red meats, proteins and the consumption of alcohol may also increase the risk of a relapse of the disease.

Infections, poor blood supply and autoimmune reactions can also be linked. Ulcerative Colitis is more common in men, although it can affect women too.

Experts believe this may be because it contains sulforaphane and anthocyanins two compounds researched for their cancer-fighting properties.

Research links high intakes of cruciferous vegetables, including cabbage, to an 18% lower risk of colon cancer. Diets rich in cruciferous vegetables have also been linked to a lower risk of breast cancer.

Moreover, theres evidence to suggest that the sulforaphane found in purple cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables may help kill cancer cells or prevent them from growing and spreading.

Cell and animal studies suggest that anthocyanins may have similar anti-cancer effects. Anthocyanins are found in red, blue, and purple fruits and vegetables, including purple cabbage.
