Here are 13 foods that should be easy on your digestion. However, the right Crohns diet is highly individualso use trial and error to see what works for you.

Many people with Crohns are lactose intolerant. Luckily, theres a great dairy alternative: almond milk, which is made from ground-up almonds and can be fortified to contain as much calcium as regular milk .

Almond milk also has vitamin D and E, but contains no cholesterol or saturated fat, and fewer calories than cows milk. Many varieties contain added sweetener choosing an unsweetened product cuts about 20 calories per serving.

Scrambled, hard-boiled, soft-cookedany way you prepare them, eggs are an inexpensive source of easily digested protein.

Make sure youve always got some in the fridge.

Eggs and toast are a standby for Marge McDonald, 46, during a flare up, along with potatoes and egg noodles. Anything non-greasy, says McDonald, who directs the Burlington Senior Center in Massachusetts and has ulcerative colitis. Honestly when Im flaring I just end up eating carbs.

If you have very soft-cooked oatmeal, thats a great breakfast, she says.

Foods To Avoid During Ulcerative Colitis Flares

During a flare, ulcerative colitis symptoms become more severe, and certain foods can worsen them further.

Following these guidelines can keep you away from the most common food triggers during UC flares:

  • Avoid high-fiber foods, such as whole grains, dried fruit, and raw vegetables or vegetables with tough skin. Make sure to cook vegetables thoroughly, and avoid vegetables with seeds.
  • Avoid cruciferous vegetables that produce gas, such as broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.

What To Eat During A Flare

âIf a flare-up occurs, eat foods that are easy to digest and gentle on the gastrointestinal tract,â Goodrich says. âYou should also reduce dairy and switch to processed grains and cooked vegetables.â

She suggests the following sample menu during a flare-up: Cream of Wheat for breakfast, chicken noodle soup for lunch and chicken, cooked carrots and mashed potatoes for dinner.
