Abstract

BACKGROUND:

The use of herbal and synthetic compounds can be effective in improving the areas and repair of tissues that have been affected during the processes like what happens in ulcerative colitis as a common inflammatory disorder. According to the beneficial effects of aloe vera, in this study, we aimed to assess the therapeutic effects of oral aloe vera gel on acetic acid-induced colitis in rats by histopathological and molecular analysis of Bax, and BCL-2 genes expression in colon tissue samples.

METHODS:

RESULTS:

Histologically, aloe vera gel treatment could reduce and heal colon tissue damages in induced colitis. Also, this gel reduced apoptosis in rats colon with acetic acid-induced colitis, which showed in significantly decreased in Bax mRNA expression and significantly increased BCL-2 mRNA expression compared with the colitis group with no treatment.

Aloe vera gel has a significant effect on the treatment of UC in rat because of the beneficial effect that was found from aloe vera such as decreasing the severity of colitis as evidenced by histopathological findings, and with respect to apoptosis and gene expression that were related to wound healing process, and suppression of the elevation of Bax mRNA with the upregulation of Bcl-2, which can be considered effective in the treatment of UC.

Measurement Of Clinical Disease Activity

Disease activity scores were calculated using the SCCAI. This was modified to allow inclusion of patients with active proctitis, but without increased stool frequency. The modification involved altering the scores for stool frequency so that patients recording zero or one bowel movement in a day scored zero, those with 23 stools scored 1 point, those with 46 scored 2, those with 79 scored 3 and those with > 9 scored 4. To confirm the validity of this minor modification, we showed that, in patients at baseline, the SCCAI was significantly negatively correlated with the IBDQ it also correlated positively with the Baron sigmoidoscopic score .

Aloe Vera Is Used For:

Aloe vera can be used topically or orally. When taken orally, aloe soothes the gastrointestinal tract. One study found aloe vera gel to be beneficial for those with ulcerative colitis. A review of studies also found aloe vera gel to be helpful when used as a mouthwash to prevent oral mucositis in people undergoing cancer treatment. When used topically, as a gel from the leaves, aloe is an effective, natural treatment for a variety of skin conditions, including burns, abrasions, cold sores, psoriasis, sunburn and frostbite. Three studies have shown that aloe vera gel has some beneficial effect as a topical treatment for mild psoriasis. While widely thought to promote the healing of wounds, studies of this therapeutic use have yielded mixed results.

Consider Therapy To Help Manage Stress And Pain

Working with a therapist on certain mind-body techniques can help you control ulcerative colitis symptoms.

Cognitive behavioral therapy and a technique called biofeedback may be useful, as these processes teach skills to cope with stress and pain. In CBT, you learn to recognize and change behaviors and emotions that affect you physically. According to an article in Therapeutic Advances in Gastroenterology, CBT can ease abdominal pain for some people. Biofeedback will teach you how to identify and control some bodily processes, such as heart rate or tension in your muscles, and it can be effective in helping manage chronic pain.

Preparation Of Calcium Phosphate

Ahmadzadeh-Asl et al investigated calcium phosphate cements prepared by using hyaluronic acid solutions with two different molecular weights. The results revealed that the long setting time and the low compressive strength of the CPC could be improved drastically by using HA in the cement composition, in molecular weight dependent manner, suggesting that calcium phosphate nanocomposite cement obtained by HA solution can be successively used as injectable bone filler material.

In a biomimetic approach, to enhance cartilage synthesis and regeneration, Wang et al prepared amorphous inorganic polyphosphate micro-particles with Mg2+ as a counter-ion. Similar particles were obtained addition of Mg2+ ions to a solution containing HA, as a major component of the synovial fluid and soluble Na+-polyP and Ca2+ polyP. The authors proposed a strategy for treatment of joint dysfunction caused by osteoarthritis based on the application of amorphous Mg2+-polyP micro-particles that prevent calcium crystal formation in the synovial fluid using scavenging Ca2+ polyP ions and enhance chondrocyte function after binding of the Ca2+-polyP to HA at the cartridge surface. In complex polyP, HA might be protected against enzymatic degradation by hyaluronidase.

Walker et al published several preparations of HA being available for many United State, FDA Labelled indication, for cosmetics and intraarticular uses.

Get Regular Exercise To Reduce Uc Inflammation

Snider says exercise is useful in managing many of the complications associated with ulcerative colitis, including decreased bone density, a weakened immune system, emotional health problems, stress, and weight gain.

“Try to engage in a moderate-intensity exercise like swimming or biking, three or four days per week,” he says. A review published in August 2016 in Pharmacological Reports noted that moderate exercise releases protective myokines such as irisin from working skeletal muscles, which promotes healing and helps with inflammatory bowel disease inflammation.

Snider also strongly recommends yoga as a natural treatment for ulcerative colitis, as it promotes relaxation and targets the digestive system, flooding the area with oxygen and nutrition for healing. Find what type and frequency of exercise works for you and take it slow: Too much exercise can cause mild systemic inflammation.

Research indicates that stress plays a role in inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis. Researchers analyzed data on 2,007 adults in a Swiss IBD study and found a relationship between depression and anxiety and disease symptoms. The results were published in June 2016 in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Counteract stress with relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation to help your body relax.

Active Ingredients And Mechanisms Of Action

A large number of biological activities have been ascribed to Aloe vera to explain its purported health benefits, including antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, lipid and glucose lowering, antiproliferative, immunostimulatory, and antioxidant functions. A number of potentially active ingredients in the latex and gel of Aloe vera have been identified however, much has yet to be determined about their mechanisms of action. Further studies are also required to determine the active properties of numerous other Aloe vera constituents and to explore the competitive or synergistic actions of particular combinations of ingredients.

    How To Harvest The Plant

Its relatively simple to harvest an aloe plant for gel and juice. Youll need a mature plant thats at least a few years old. This ensures a higher concentration of the active ingredients.

Youll also want to wait a few weeks before cutting leaves from the same plant. You may want to have a few plants on rotation if you plan to harvest aloe often.

To harvest your aloe plant for gel and juice:

  • Remove 3-4 leaves at a time, choosing thick leaves from the outer sections of the plant.
  • Ensure the leaves are healthy and free of any mold or damage.
  • Cut them close to the stem. Most of the beneficial nutrients are found at the base of the leaves.
  • Avoid the roots.
  • Wash and dry the leaves.
  • Trim the prickly edges with a knife.
  • Using a knife or your fingers, separate the interior gel from the outside of the leaf. The interior gel is the part of the aloe that youll use.
  • Allow the yellow sap to drain from the leaf. This is the aloe vera latex. If you plan to use the latex, you can catch this in a container. If youre not planning to use the latex, you can dispose of it.
  • Cut the aloe gel into slices or cubes.
  • If you want smooth aloe gel, after separating the aloe from the exterior part of the leaf, you can put the aloe into a blender and then strain the substance to remove the pulp.

    Power Calculations And Statistical Analysis

On the assumption of a 10% clinical remission rate with placebo and a 50% remission rate with aloe vera gel, and with the use of a 2:1 aloe vera:placebo randomization scheme, 45 patients were required to detect this difference at the 5% level of significance with 80% power. All patients who met the inclusion criteria and were effectively followed up were included in the analyses.

Fisher’s exact test was used to compare treatment and placebo groups with respect to gender. The chi-squared test was used to compare treatment and placebo groups in relation to baseline disease extent and therapy. The MannWhitney U-test was used to compare the groups at baseline in relation to age, SCCAI, IBDQ, sigmoidoscopic score, histological grade and blood results. Correlations at baseline between SCCAI, IBDQ and sigmoidoscopic score were assessed by Spearman’s rank correlation test.

Statistical calculations were made using computer software programs . Numerical results are expressed as the median and interquartile range. Because all the comparisons to be made were planned prospectively, no correction for multiple comparison was applied. All tests were two-tailed and significance was reported at the 5% level.
