Its not always easy knowing what foods best fuel your body, especially when you have Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Your diet and nutrition are a major part of life with inflammatory bowel disease , yet there is no single diet that works for everyone.

Nutrition affects not just your IBD symptoms, but also your overall health and well-being. Without proper nutrients, thesymptoms of your Crohns disease or ulcerative colitis can cause serious complications, including nutrient deficiencies, weight loss, and malnutrition.

What To Eat If You Have Crohns

If youve got inflammatory bowel disease , you need to make calories count.

Certain foods won’t speed gut healing, but there are plenty that can help you stay well-nourished without aggravating symptoms, says Tracie Dalessandro, RD, a nutritionist based in Briarcliff Manor, NY, who also has Crohns disease.

Here are 13 foods that should be easy on your digestion. However, the right Crohn’s diet is highly individualso use trial and error to see what works for you.

Many people with Crohns are lactose intolerant. Luckily, theres a great dairy alternative: almond milk, which is made from ground-up almonds and can be fortified to contain as much calcium as regular milk .

Almond milk also has vitamin D and E, but contains no cholesterol or saturated fat, and fewer calories than cows milk. Many varieties contain added sweetener choosing an unsweetened product cuts about 20 calories per serving.

Scrambled, hard-boiled, soft-cookedany way you prepare them, eggs are an inexpensive source of easily digested protein.

Make sure youve always got some in the fridge.

Eggs and toast are a standby for Marge McDonald, 46, during a flare up, along with potatoes and egg noodles. Anything non-greasy, says McDonald, who directs the Burlington Senior Center in Massachusetts and has ulcerative colitis. Honestly when Im flaring I just end up eating carbs.

If you have very soft-cooked oatmeal, thats a great breakfast, she says.

Foods That May Fight Uc

Some research shows that certain nutrients may help fight the irritation and swelling in your gut caused by UC. Scientists have studied how linoleic acid affects people with the condition. Although everyone needs this “good” fat, donât overdo it, since there is some evidence it may play a role in inflammation if you get too much.

Other studies show that an omega-3 fatty acid called EPA may fight inflammation. This is another âgoodâ fat that blocks certain chemicals in your body called leukotrienes. Fish oil is a good source of EPA. In some studies, folks with UC saw some benefits when they took high doses. Many people, though, didn’t like the fishy taste. There is also some evidence that adding fish oil to aminosalicylates may be helpful, but this isnât proven. DHA is another omega-3 found in fish oil that can fight inflammation and is used by some people with UC.

Some research also shows that yogurt with gut-healthy bacteria, called probiotics, eases inflammation. Scientists are still studying how they may help people with UC and similar conditions. Some people also believe that a diet low in FODMAPs — a type of highly-fermentable carbs found in meats, fruits, dairy, and lots of other foods — may help ease UC symptoms. But the evidence is unclear if it does. And without close monitoring, any diet that restricts certain foods may lead to poor nutrition and other problems.

We dont know what causes Crohns and Colitis but we do know that a combination of the following factors are likely to play a part:

  • Genetics
  • A problem with the immune system, where the body attacks its own cells
  • Changes in the bacteria in the gut.

These, together with environmental factors, like food and stress, may trigger the conditions.There isnt any clear evidence that specific foods cause Crohns or Colitis. Some researchers think a diet low in fruit and vegetables may increase the risk of Crohns and a low intake of vegetables may increase the risk of Colitis for some people. Theres also some evidence that eating a lot of meat or table sugar, called sucrose, may increase the risk of Crohns and Colitis. But there isnt enough evidence yet to say for certain whether food affects the risk.

  • Follow a low residue diet to relieve abdominal pain and diarrhea.
  • Avoid foods that may increase stool output such as fresh fruits and vegetables, prunes and caffeinated beverages.
  • Try incorporating more omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. These fats may have an anti-inflammatory effect. They are found in fish, including salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines.
  • Patients often find that smaller, more frequent meals are better tolerated. This eating pattern can help increase the amount of nutrition you receive in a day.
  • Consider taking nutritional supplements if appetite is poor and solid foods are not tolerated well .

What Foods Should I Avoid If I Have Ulcerative Colitis

While no single diet has been proven to treat the intestinal inflammation that causes ulcerative colitis, avoiding some foods may help alleviate symptoms during a flare-up. Trigger foods are not the same for everyone, so it is important to track what you eat and identify your own troublesome foods.

Avoid these foods during an ulcerative colitis flare-up, as they can be potential trigger foods:

  • Foods high in insoluble fiber: whole grain foods , fruits with skin and seeds, some raw green vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, nuts, seeds, beans, lentils and peas
  • Dairy products: milk, cream cheese and soft cheeses
  • Non-absorbable sugars: sugar alcohols such as sorbitol and mannitol, which are found in sugar-free foods like gum, candy and ice cream
  • High-sugar foods: pastries, candy, chocolate and juices
  • High-fat foods: butter, margarine and cream, as well as greasy foods such as pizza and fried foods
  • Alcoholic and caffeinated beverages: beer, wine, liquor, soda and coffee. Elimination of alcohol may not be required, but it should be consumed in moderation.
  • Spicy foods

Eating When You Are In A Flare

There are certain foods you may want to avoid when you are in an IBD flare, and others that may help you get the right amount of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals without making your symptoms worse.

Your healthcare team may put you on an elimination diet, in which you avoid certain foods in order to identify which trigger symptoms. This process will help you identify common foods to avoid during a flare. Elimination diets should only be done under the supervision of your healthcare team and a dietitian so they can make sure you are still receiving the necessary nutrients.

Some foods may trigger cramping, bloating, and/or diarrhea. Many trigger foods should also be avoided if you have been diagnosed with a stricture, a narrowing of the intestine caused by inflammation or scar tissue, or have had a recent surgery. Certain foods can be easier to digest and can provide you with the necessary nutrients your body needs.

What Is Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is an IBD that causes the lining of the large intestine to become inflamed and small ulcers to develop on the colon’s lining. It is a chronic, long-term condition that can have weeks or months with mild or no symptoms followed by flare ups. During a flare up, or relapse, the symptoms of ulcerative colitis return or flare up. The severity of a flare up can vary.

Common symptoms are diarrhea, urgency to have a bowel movement, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, blood in the stool, constipation, loss of appetite, fatigue and weight loss. These can have a negative impact on your nutrition and health.

If youre worried about triggering a flare, eat small, frequent meals throughout the day, says Palcsik, and avoid foods that contain sugar alcohols.

People who feel nauseated in the mornings can likely tolerate a protein shake and cooked, pureed, or canned fruit, she adds. Soft, fleshy fruit like watermelon and applesauce are other good options. Palcsik recommends pairing one high-protein food with a carbohydrate thats low in insoluble fiber.

A few stomach-friendly breakfast ideas:

  • 1 cup of low-fat cottage cheese with a fruit cup
  • 2 scrambled eggs with ½ cup of unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 cup of oatmeal with a peeled peach
  • Smoothie made with 1 cup of low-fat Greek yogurt, 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk, 1 cup of frozen peaches, and ½ banana
  • 2 hard-boiled eggs with 1 cup of cooked wheat grains

Eat In: Ulcerative Colitis Meal

When you have a gastrointestinal issue like UC, you cant rely on restaurants and takeout counters to have foods that suit your needs. Many restaurants use a lot of butter to make their food taste so good.

Thats why you may want to do more cooking at home using fresh foods if possible, not prepared stuff packed with preservatives.

Some people with UC find that eating four to six small meals instead of three large ones keeps their guts happier, which means youve got more dishes to plan than ever.

Pick up some meal-prep habits if you havent yet. Those include planning bigger meals in a slow cooker or making staples like baked chicken, starches, or roasted veggies that you can mix and match for the rest of the week.

While youre shopping for the week ahead, pick up some of the staples youll need during a flare-up, too. That way you can skip going to the store when youre under the weather.

So much research still needs to be done to find the ideal combination of foods that will keep IBD in remission, but you can work with a gastroenterologist or registered dietitian to find what works for you.

That may require a lot of trial and error, so be patient with yourself.

How To Make The Best Overnight Oats

  • Taste the fruit. Adjust any the sweeteners accordingly. Fruit adds color and sweetness to overnight oats, eliminating the need for added sugar or allowing you to add less of it.
  • Add different textures. With old-fashioned rolled oats as a base, the walnuts and fresh fruit add flavor, crunch, and variety.
  • Add the right amount of liquid. The oats will soak up the milk and become softer overnight. You have some flexibility here. Be sure to add enough milk to cover the oats or else they will be a bit firm the next day. If you prefer to have a little extra milk with your oats, go for it!
  • Season to taste. Punch up the flavor with a pinch of salt or a generous sprinkle of cinnamon or cardamom if you want more spice.
