We decided a priori to adjust all estimates for the womans age, socioeconomic status , parity, pre-pregnancy BMI, smoking and alcohol consumption, as these variables may affect the risk of pregnancy and birth outcomes and are also associated with IBD. Information on parity was obtained from the Medical Birth Register. Information on the remaining variables was obtained from DNBC prenatal interviews conducted at ca. 16 and 30 weeks gestation. Our SES variable combined information on educational attainment and current employment for the adult in the household with the highest SES at the beginning of the pregnancy. The smoking and alcohol variables combined information from the two interviews and represented the womans behavior while pregnant pre-pregnancy information was not available for smoking.
