Frankincense serrata essential oil can be used as part of your skincare routine, too. By blending frankincense with other essential oils and a carrier oil, the mixture can be used as an effective natural anti-aging serum.

Certain early research has shown that frankincense can help with diminishing signs of aging such as fine lines, roughness, and sun damage.

Fruit And Vegetable Smoothies Are Easy To Digest

Most individuals with active or inactive IBD can tolerate fruits and vegetables when the rough fiber is removed or broken down in the blender before ingestion.

Thats why I often recommend fruit and vegetable smoothies to my IBD patients, both during flares and in remission.

Blending fruits and vegetables breaks down the tough-to-digest fiber but leaves the nutrients intact.

Using Essential Oils Topically

Essential oils are very concentrated and can cause skin irritation. To prevent this, you can dilute them in a carrier oil before theyre applied topically. Some common types of carrier oils are jojoba, avocado, and coconut.

When starting out with essential oils, its a good idea to use a more diluted preparation. For a 2.5 percent solution, the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy recommends using 15 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil.

Some people may have a skin reaction to certain essential oils, so its always a good idea to do a patch test on a small area of skin first.

To do this:

  • Place a small amount of diluted essential oil on the skin of your arm or wrist.
  • Cover the area with a clean bandage for 24 hours.
  • Remove the bandage and check the area. If you notice areas of redness or swelling, dont use the essential oil on your skin.

Aromatherapy May Help You Manage Ulcerative Colitis

Studies have shown that ingredients in essential oils used in aromatherapy may have anti-inflammatory or analgesic properties, and some may help boost your mood and energy, says Hallie Armstrong, ND, a naturopathic physician at Beaumont Health in West Bloomfield, Illinois. It may be that these properties can help you manage symptoms, like pain and fatigue, that come with UC.

There is research to support the effectiveness of aromatherapy in treating a range of medical conditions. A review published in August 2015 in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine found that essential oils extracted from plant parts may reduce inflammation, relieve symptoms of indigestion, and treat skin infections, among other benefits.

However, its important to note that most studies have been done in animals, so the findings may not translate to humans. More robust studies in people are needed to determine if the health claims around essential oils hold true.

Still, if youd like to give essential oils a try, they may enhance your overall well-being if used in a safe way. Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns before, after, or while using essential oils.

    Can Olive Oil Treat Constipation

Well, we only found 2 studies that have evaluated the effect of olive oil on constipation, but both showed promising results.

In the first study, researchers were comparing different bowel-cleansing regimens for colonoscopy preparation .

They evaluated the conventional preparation, which involves drinking 4 liters of a polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution , against an experimental regimen in which patients drank one-fourth cup of olive oil mixed into a glass of apple juice before consuming 2 liters of PEG-ELS.

Surprisingly, the olive oil regimen did a BETTER job cleansing the colon, and patients found it to be more tolerable than the conventional preparation.

The second study compared the effects of olive oil and flaxseed oil to mineral oil on constipation symptoms .

For 4 weeks, patients consumed 4 to 6 milliliters of oil each day, away from meals, and monitored their symptoms.

The olive oil and mineral oil were similarly effective, both significantly reducing symptoms of constipation.

Some of these teas most stores will have stock of. For some of the herbal teas, you may need to go to a health store or tea shop. You can also shop for tea online.

There will also be brewing instructions on most boxes of tea. If not, generally, to be safe you can go with 3-5 minutes of brewing, but some teas such as black tea and green tea can become very bitter if they are brewed for longer than 3 minutes. Common Issues Of The Digestive System

    Irritable Bowel Syndrome

IBS is also known as nervous indigestion, irritable colon, spastic colon, spastic colitis, or mucous colitis.

Stress is by far the most significant trigger with IBS and essential oils that calm the individual and restore parasympathetic functioning are the most important treatment.

Causes: Spasms in the large intestine, with no apparent physical defect in the digestive tract.

Symptoms: Alternating constipation and sudden diarrhea, lower abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, gas, nausea and halitosis may also occur.

Which essential oils for the digestive system can be used for IBS?

Any of the neurodepressant essential oils listed previously will be helpful, combined with any of the antispasmodic essential oils, as the major symptoms are caused by intestinal spasm. Peppermint has been successfully used internally in conventional allopathic medications to relieve IBS symptoms. Peppermint also has a good effect on spasms and pain when used topically. Basil is useful for both its strengthening effects on the nervous system and as an antispasmodic.

    Methods of Application:

Abdominal Massage: Essential oils used in a 1-5%, for abdominal massage can be very helpful during the constipation stage of IBS and can also help to relieve the bloating and pain. Be sure to follow the directional flow of the colon when doing abdominal massage. Cautions: Diarrhea is a contraindication to abdominal massage.

    Eat In: Ulcerative Colitis Meal

When you have a gastrointestinal issue like UC, you cant rely on restaurants and takeout counters to have foods that suit your needs. Many restaurants use a lot of butter to make their food taste so good.

Thats why you may want to do more cooking at home using fresh foods if possible, not prepared stuff packed with preservatives.

Some people with UC find that eating four to six small meals instead of three large ones keeps their guts happier, which means youve got more dishes to plan than ever.

Pick up some meal-prep habits if you havent yet. Those include planning bigger meals in a slow cooker or making staples like baked chicken, starches, or roasted veggies that you can mix and match for the rest of the week.

While youre shopping for the week ahead, pick up some of the staples youll need during a flare-up, too. That way you can skip going to the store when youre under the weather.

So much research still needs to be done to find the ideal combination of foods that will keep IBD in remission, but you can work with a gastroenterologist or registered dietitian to find what works for you.

That may require a lot of trial and error, so be patient with yourself.

No one likes an upset stomach, but digestive problems can go beyond discomfort. In recent years, medical experts have referred to our gut as our second brain. When our digestive system is suffering, it can impact our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Adding essential oils for the digestive system to your wellness protocol can be very helpful.

If youre looking for an overall blend to help support good digestion, e3s Digestion Blend is a great choice. However, lets explore the different essential oils and application methods that can help soothe your gut and address some of the most common digestive issues.

Stress is probably the factor with the highest impact on our digestive system. Youve probably experienced how when youre under extra stress or worried about something your stomach gets more agitated. This makes sense since the digest system is directly influenced by the sympathetic and parasympathetic division of the nervous system. Digestion effectively stops when your sympathetic system is active, so if youre chronically stressed this can lead to many forms of digestive dysfunction. Thats one of the reasons why the most effective essential oils for the digestive system are often the ones you find the most calming and soothing.

Tips For Drinking Alcohol Responsibly If You Already Drink

Doctors do not recommend starting to drink red wine to benefit your health. The reason to drink red wine is because it gives you pleasure, not to mistakingly think youll get a cardiovascular benefit or because you believe it has medicinal value, says Bhatt. So dont start drinking if you dont already. But if youre already a red wine drinker, follow these guidelines:

Stick to one. Having a glass of wine each night with dinner for a week is far less risky than drinking all seven glasses of wine at once on a Friday night, says Koob.

Drink it with food. Happy hour may be fun, but at least make sure youre snacking while sipping. Food helps protect the lining of the stomach and also slows the absorption of alcohol into the body, which means organs in the body, including the liver and brain, are exposed to less alcohol all at once, says Koob. That buffers your blood alcohol level and decreases the risk of injury.

And make it a healthy meal. If youre drinking a glass of wine, couple it with healthy foods, like those found in the Mediterranean diet, including whole grains, vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, and healthy fats like olive oil, says Bhatt.

    Analysis Of Colonic Inflammatory Markers

Colon tissues, approximately 2cm long, and 1cm away from the rectum were rinsed thoroughly by PBS and stored in RNAlater at 80°C. Six randomly selected colonic tissues from 50mg/kg standard and ETO- curcumin groups as well as their respective non-treatment and DSS-treatment control groups were used for the gene expression analysis. The nCounter GX mouse inflammation kit was used to determine gene expression alterations in inflammation-associated genes. In brief, RNA extracts from colon tissues were subjected to nCounter RNA sample preparation. Thereafter, 100ng of RNA was used to hybridize probes at 65°C for 18hours, followed by purification and analysis on an nCounter Prep Station and Digital Analyzer. The raw data were normalized using nSolver using built-in positive controls and the housekeeping genes were used to normalize and calculate mRNA content. Data were then analyzed by multiple t-test with correction for multiple comparison using Sidak-Bonferroni methods using JMP genomics .
