Assess Your Individual Tolerance

What You Can And Cant Eat On The Bland Diet

No evidence suggests that spicy or citrus foods affect ulcer disease, although some individuals do report worsening of symptoms after eating these types of foods. It is important to find out what works for you. If you notice that your symptoms get worse after eating certain foods, then limit or avoid them so you can feel your best, making sure that you dont eliminate an entire food group.

Dietary Fibre & Vitamin A

Research shows that a high fibre diet decreases the risk of developing ulcer disease. Although both insoluble and soluble fibres demonstrate this association, there is a stronger association between diets high in soluble fibre and a decreased risk for developing ulcers.

Foods that are high in soluble fibre include oats, psyllium husk, legumes, flax seeds, barley, nuts, and certain vegetables and fruits, such as oranges, apples, and carrots.

Findings from a prospective cohort study that included 47,806 men, showed that a diet rich in vitamin A from all sources might reduce the development of duodenal ulcer, as might diets high in fruits and vegetables, possibly due to their fibre content.2 A prospective cohort study follows, over time, a group of similar individuals who differ with respect to certain factors under study, to determine how these factors affect rates of a certain outcome however, more research is necessary to verify results because there are so many other factors involved with this type of study that could confound the data.

Animal studies demonstrate that vitamin A increases the production of mucus in the gastrointestinal tract. Impaired mucosal defense can allow ulcers to develop. Therefore, vitamin A may have a protective effect against the development of ulcer disease.3

Good sources of vitamin A include liver, carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, kale, spinach, and collard greens.

How Much Bland Diet To Feed A Dog

When your dog is having an acute episode of vomiting and diarrhea the first thing you need to do is withhold food or water for a couple of hours to try and ease the symptoms. Some experts say you should have your dog fast for 12-24 hours in case of vomiting and diarrhea. Not everybody agrees with this though. If the dog is already weak he will need some food to get his energy back. Fasting is not an option for a puppy!

Also, if the dog appears dehydrated, as is frequently the case with an upset stomach, try offering small amounts of water every 10-15 minutes.

How much food you should give your dog depends on his weight. A very small dog, weighing less than 5 pounds only needs 1/2 of rice and meat split into small servings to be offered throughout the day. A large dog over 100 pounds should get some 4-5 cups, also spread throughout the day in small servings. Allow at least 2 hours between meals.

Do make sure to rehydrate your dog after the vomiting and diarrhea episode. Keep in mind that a dog needs about one ounce of water for every pound of body weight per day. If you suspect the dog is dehydrated, you should add some Pedialyte, available over the counter, to his drinking water to combat electrolyte imbalances.

    Bland Diet Recipe Substitutes

As you can see from the lists above, a bland diet offers more variety than you may have originally assumed. However, there are some limitations that may restrict you from eating some foods that you might usually enjoy.

    • While you can eat chicken while on a bland diet, you may find that you miss being able to add pepper to your meal. Instead, try using dried thyme on your chicken.
    • Nutmeg is a spice often included in many desserts. Try replacing nutmeg with cinnamon as an alternative spice for a tasty treat.
    • While you cannot duplicate the crunchy sensation of nuts in your recipes in a bland diet, you can often find a nut butter that you can use as a substitute to add flavor to your favorite dishes.
    • While you should avoid raw fruits, applesauce or other pureed fruits are acceptable to provide a fruit-filled treat.
    • If you are hooked on caffeine, you may find avoiding caffeinated beverages difficult. Try drinking herbal tea, coconut water, or sparkling water to curb your caffeine fix.
    • While fried eggs, meats, potatoes, or breads are to be avoided, try baking, broiling, or mashing these foods to replace fried substances in your meals.

Bland Diet For Dogs With Allergies

    Bland Diet List Of Foods

Just as they can get ulcers, many dogs can develop food allergies. As in humans, food allergies cause rashes and itchiness, which might be hard to detect in a dog. However, food allergies can also cause vomiting and diarrhea. Its very hard to tell if the dog has a sensitive stomach, as many pet owners claim, or there is an underlying health problem.

If you suspect your dogs symptoms are caused by some allergy, put the dog on a bland diet until the stomach gets better. After that, you should try an elimination process. Reintroduce a new food in the dogs diet and wait for a couple of days to see if the symptoms reappear. Repeat this process until you find the culprit, the food your dog is allergic to.

Never introduce two new foods at the same time as you wont be able to tell which of them is the cause of your dogs problems.

If your dog has allergies, be very careful with commercial diets, as in some cases not all the ingredients are labeled properly. Also, the fillers in pet food are sometimes whats causing a dogs allergy in the first place. And there are such fillers even in products marketed for dogs with a sensitive stomach.

Any sort of food can trigger an allergic reaction in dogs. The most commonly reported allergens for dogs are beef, chicken, fish, corn, dairy, or soy. Food allergies usually appear when a dog is very young, between 5 and 12 months.

In order to fully treat and prevent recurrence of the disease, it is imperative to adjust your diet and give up bad habits: one of the most important components of therapeutic interventions is a diet for a stomach ulcer.

Gastric ulcer is unfortunately a fairly common disease of the digestive tract. The annual rates of global incidence of peptic ulcer are 0.100.19%, diagnosed by doctors, and 0.030.17% for hospitalization data.

In the United States, about 4.5 million people suffer from peptic ulcer disease each year. Approximately 10% of the US population has signs of duodenal ulcer. Only about 10% of young people have H. Pylori infection, but the proportion of people with Helicobacter pylori infection increases steadily with age. H. Pylori infection can be diagnosed in 90-100% of patients with duodenal ulcer and in 60-100% of patients with gastric ulcer.

    Green Tea And Flavonoid

Emerging research from China shows the potential protective effects of green tea and other foods that are rich in flavonoids against chronic gastritis, H. pylori infection, and stomach cancer. Specifically, these foods seem to inhibit the growth of H. pylori.

In addition, one recent laboratory study of green, white, oolong, and black teas indicated that these teas inhibit the growth of H. pylori but cause no harm to beneficial types of bacteria normally found in the stomach, including L. acidophilus, L. plantarum, and B. lungum. However, this was an in vitro study, which means testing occurred directly between teas and bacteria in the laboratory, and we cannot draw direct conclusions as to what would happen inside the human body between these two substances. Beneficial effects in the laboratory were best when tea steeped for a full five minutes.

Flavonoid-rich foods include garlic, onions, and colourful fruits and vegetables such as cranberries, strawberries, blueberries, broccoli, carrots, and snap peas.4,5
