All of the diets above are intended to be temporary and followed during a flare-up. Working with a dietitian can help prevent deficiencies in certain micronutrients, which is common with IBD.
During a flare its helpful to eat four to six small meals per day rather than fewer larger meals. Its also very important to drink fluids because diarrhea can occur with a flare and cause dehydration.
Foods To Eat With Ulcerative Colitis
My long-term nutrition goal for my clients with ulcerative colitis is always to move towards an anti-inflammatory diet where they eat as many whole plant foods as possible. It is thought that a more Mediterranean or anti-inflammatory diet pattern contributes to an healthier community of gut bacteria, a stronger gut barrier and a better immune balance between tolerance and inflammation. In one clinical trial, a plant-based diet improved relapse rates in ulcerative colitis. Other lab research suggests that a Mediterranean-style diet decreases risk of colitis. However, because of the nature of inflammation and irritation, it can often take very slow and sustained change over time to increase intake of plant-based foods comfortably.
- Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables have been associated with a decreased risk of ulcerative colitis. They are high in anti-inflammatory phytochemicals and fibre, which is critical for production of short chain fatty acids by our gut bacteria that help to ease inflammation and support gut barrier function.
- Omega 3 rich seeds
We all need omega 3 rich foods in our daily diet ulcerative colitis is no exception. Data suggests that increased intake of omega 3 rich foods decreases risk of ulcerative colitis but clinical trials on fish oils have not offered conclusive benefits to disease outcomes.
- Calcium- and magnesium-rich foods
- High Fibre Foods, as tolerated
Worth A Try For Crohn’s Or Uc
After reading this study and other books on diet, I think the SVD diet is one all IBD patients should consider. It seems to strike a nice balance. Most days patients can eat healthy fruits, vegetables, rice, tofu, nuts, and beans, and, if you’re not vegan, things like boiled eggs. At the same time room is left once a week for wild-caught fish or lean meats.
The great part about this diet is it is not only healthy for you but can serve as a potential gateway to the vegan lifestyle. It did for me. I noticed I was better on it, acclimated, and eventually was able to drop meat altogether.
Furthermore, since you rarely eat meat on this diet, you really make those moments count and generally eat high-quality meat. I did at least, for example, ordering elk from a company in Wyoming, which is leaner, nutrient-dense meat that is supposedly better for your health. All in all, I highly recommend trying out the SVD protocol.

My Passion For Cooking

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet
The Specific Carbohydrate Diet was specifically designed to help treat Celiac disease, but it has since been recommended for Ulcerative Colitis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Crohns Disease. The main takeaway from this whole article should be some of our intestines dont digest grains or sugars well!
The Specific Carbohydrate diet, like the Low-FODMAP diet is considered an elimination diet, which is a diet where you eliminate trigger foods during flare-ups to help battle your painful symptoms. On this diet, you eliminate carbohydrates that are complex to digest. You may be tired of hearing this, but the top two foods you need to quit on the SCD are grains and dairy. This diet can be hard to follow long-term since there are so many foods you have to eliminate, so dont feel bad if you feel like you cant keep up. Long-term diets arent really sustainable, which is why I suggest a trial period to see how your gut is feeling, but also to see how youre managing mentally.
Mixing Different Food Types
While I don’t agree with everything Dr. Klein suggests, he taught me a few helpful tricks. For instance, Dr. Klein stresses the importance of food combinations. To take one example, if you are ill, he suggests you avoid mixing 2 or more different food types since this can be difficult to digest. I’ve tried following his advice and think it helps.
In terms of the healthy vegan diet, Dr. Klein feels this is non-negotiable. This is one point where I think he may be a bit too extreme. Many Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis patients have done well on a variety of different diets so I don’t think this is necessarily a one-size-fits-all disease. Additionally, some patients probably benefit from eating meat periodically.

After a colonoscopy, you may feel nauseated, fatigued, and uneasy about eating again. Thinking about what to eat to restart your digestive system can be intimidating after youve spent so much time emptying it, especially if you live with ulcerative colitis or Crohns disease. For many, food is comfort, and that can still be the case when recovering from a colonoscopy. Simple, easy-to-digest foods should make up most of your first meals after a colonoscopy.
Its important to note that while this article highlights great meal ideas, the most essential thing to provide your body after a colonoscopy is plenty of fluids with electrolytes. Bowel prep can be very dehydrating, so once your procedure is over, plan to drink several cups of an oral rehydration solution like Pedialyte or DripDrop. I like to use avocado oil not only because its a healthy fat, but because it has a high smoke point of 500°F. Oils that have a lower smoke-point like olive oil turn rancid when cooked above a certain temperature, which has in turn been linked to cancer. Therefore, use olive oil for colder dishes like dressings. Canola oil has a smoke point of 400° and contains omega-3s but has been linked to inflammation if heavily consumed.
People with diabetes should be aware that even though honey is a natural sugar, it will still cause blood sugar levels to increase.

Modify Diets To Include Soft Fiber And Cooked Veggies
Warren tends to recommend anti-inflammatory diets rather than individual foods. The Mediterranean diet, for example, includes a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, nuts, and healthy fats such as olive oil. Warren recommends modifying the basis of this diet to incorporate these foods in a more digestible form. For example, she suggests opting for almond butter instead of whole almonds, cooking green leafy vegetables instead of eating a raw salad, and choosing inherently soft forms of fiber, such as avocado, sweet potato, and papaya.
When cooking vegetables, try steaming or microwaving instead of boiling to avoid losing nutrients during the cooking process. Warren also suggests pureeing vegetables to make nutritious soups and smoothies that are easier to digest than whole produce.
During a flare-up, Kennedy says its best to stick to foods that are easy to digest, such as refined grains , and low-fiber fruits such as bananas, cantaloupe, and honeydew melon. Removing the peel from other fruit, like apples, also cuts back on irritation-causing fiber.
Kennedy says to incorporate noncruciferous vegetables, including bell peppers, squash, eggplant, tomato, and zucchini, which have low fiber content and are easier to digest. Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli and cauliflower, on the other hand, have high fiber content and can be irritating. Avoid dishes that include these ingredients and always avoid spicy foods, says Kennedy.
Will A Vegan Diet Help Ulcerative Colitis
The plant-based diet in this study we looked at above included fish and even meat occasionally.
We can guess that a vegan diet would be even more effective, but until thats actually studied, we have no evidence behind it.
Unfortunately theres not much more we can say. Ill update this page if and when more research on vegan diets and ulcerative colitis come out.

Pita Chips And Hummus
Hummus is made with mashed chickpeas, olive oil, and other seasonings.
The Crohns and Colitis Foundation recommend 1/4 cup of hummus and 2 ounces of pita chips as a snack.
To make hummus at home, a person can blend chickpeas, tahini, and a little olive oil together. They can add seasoning to taste but should avoid adding too much salt.
Even though it is high in fiber, pita chips and hummus can be a generally well-tolerated snack or small meal. The chickpeas in hummus may help symptoms in a person experiencing gas or bloating.
What About Vitamins And Minerals
It is a good idea for all people with IBD to take a standard multivitamin every day. People with IBD who are doing well do not need any extra vitamins or minerals. If you have Crohns disease is in the ileum or the ileum has been removed you may need to take B12, calcium, or vitamin D. You may need iron supplements if you have blood loss during inflammation or reduced iron absorption as a result of inflammation. Diarrhea or vomiting can cause loss of potassium and magnesium. If you are lactose intolerant and avoid dairy products, this can lead to low calcium. Ask your doctor if you need to be tested for any of the above.

Crohn’s Disease Exclusion Diet
The CDED is a whole foods diet designed to limit or exclude foods that may negatively affect the gut microbiome, inflammation, and the intestines ability to absorb nutrients or other functions. CDED excludes wheat, dairy, animal fat, additives, processed foods, and red meat. It includes readily available foods such as fruits, vegetables, rice, potatoes, lean meats, and eggs. In order to achieve energy needs and provide an extra supply of protein, calcium, and vitamin D it is recommended, in practice, to combine the diet with a variable amount of a formula as partial enteral nutrition .
The diet is set in three phases designed to gradually reintroduce diversified foods, provides progressively greater flexibility and improved quality of life. In phase 1, PEN comprises 50% of your calories during the first 6 weeks, decreasing to 25% of your calories over the following 6 weeks. After 12 weeks, there is a maintenance phase, where additional foods are included in the diet, the formula is maintained at 25% or adapted levels recommended by your specialized doctor or dietitian.
CDED has been shown to induce clinical remission and mucosal healing in pediatric and adult Crohn’s disease.
Clinical studies using Modulen IBD® as PEN show that CDED + PEN was as effective as the current EEN standard in achieving remission, but the CDED + PEN was better tolerated and superior for sustaining remission.
Induction And Maintenance Of Remission By Therapy Incorporating Pbd
We have 15 years of experience treating more than 159 UC patients and 70 CD patients . This includes 15 UC patients from 11 to 18 years old and 16 CD patients from 13 to 18 years old . Our cases, even mild cases, were treated on an inpatient basis . In most of the patients, there was no hesitation about admission because they were aware of the abnormality and wanted to be treated. PBD was served after admission.
We believe the incorporation of PBD in therapy contributed most to our achievement. In our practice, hospitalization plays a critical role in replacement of an omnivorous diet with PBD. It is obvious that the majority of diseases we face are chronic diseases due to an unhealthy lifestyle . Therefore, incorporation of a healthy lifestyle in medicine, namely lifestyle medicine, is fundamental for prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. Changes in lifestyle including dietary habits are not easy. Hospitalization helps limit risk factors for IBD and our health such as smoking, alcohol, sweets, and animal foods, while patients benefit from preventive factors every day such as intake of vegetables and fruits . Hospitalization seemed to enhance their self-management skills, which contributed greatly to prevention of relapse .
Although some experts recommend avoidance of dietary fiber in the active phase, our experience refutes this. We provided PBD in the active phase without any problems, even in patients with the stricture form of CD .

Eating When You Are In Remission
While theres no cure for UC, you may experience periods of remission. During this time, youll be symptom-free and your UC wont interfere with your daily life.
Theres no definitive way to avoid flare-ups forever, but you can prolong your remission periods by maintaining a diverse and nutrient-rich diet that does not include trigger foods.
To stay symptom-free, it may be helpful to follow one of the diets that other individuals with UC find successful, as well as introduce new foods slowly and stay hydrated.
However, its important to consult with your doctor or dietician before making any changes to your diet.

I had tried a paleo diet for my ulcerative colitisthe Specific Carbohydrate Diet, which had only helped somewhat. Now I wanted to try a vegan one. Perhaps Id fare better with veganism, as my friend Alison had.
Specifically, I wanted to try a diet called macrobiotics.
Id first learned of macrobiotics back in May.
