Choose Fish With Omega

Scientists have not yet come to a consensus about whether or not eating red meat has any effect on people with UC, but the nutrients in fish could be beneficial. Consuming foods like fatty fish, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, may help with UC-related inflammation, says Diekman.

Omega-3 fatty acids are a crucial nutrient your body uses to make cells and hormones that regulate blood clotting. While some studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids are anti-inflammatory, more research still needs to be done to prove theyre beneficial. According to the National Institutes of Health , omega-3 fatty acids, like probiotics, also support the immune system.

Unlike other fats, the body cant make this good fat on its own from other raw materials. Instead, you must get it from food sources, including fish like salmon, herring, sardines, rainbow trout, and mackerel just refrain from frying fillets, since fatty or greasy foods can exacerbate UC symptoms.

Evidence That Honey Provides Sweet Relief For Gut Issues Such As Colitis Irritable Bowel And Crohn’s Is Quickly Emerging

Although sugars in general are currently suffering bad press when it comes to illnesses involving inflammatory digestive issues, there is strong evidence emerging that honey does not cause the same aggravating symptoms as other forms of the sweet stuff. In fact, recent research provides robust indications that honey, unlike other forms of sugar, can actually go a long way toward restoring the integrity of the gut when damage has occurred.

The evidence concerning the beneficial properties of honey could not be stronger simply because the research concerned looked at the effects on one of the two main forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease , ulcerative colitis . This illness, which like many other digestive tract conditions is on the increase, is also chronic in nature. For patients this means that although the symptoms can go into remission intermittently, they can also expect it to be a life-long problem.

Currently the contemporary treatments available for ulcerative colitis generally include those which are available for many other inflammatory intestinal problems such as irritable bowel syndrome. Usually these include both anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics which are often prescribed for long periods of time particularly when a sufferer has regular or severe relapses.

H Pylori And Manuka Honey

The Miracle Healing of Manuka Honey – Dr Alan Mandell, DC

Heliobacter Pylori is a bacteria in the stomach that some people have and some people dont.

It turns out that 44% of humans are living with H. pylori bacteria in their body, most likely having been infected with it during childhood.

Although it can lead to serious illness, it doesnt cause issues in everybody. Many people dont present symptoms and will not even know they have it.

Pylori is not, on its own, a stomach problem. Its when it starts to damage the lining of the stomach that it can cause a range of stomach problems like peptic ulcers or even gastritis.

Typical symptoms of when this happens are similar to that of stomach cancer but blood tests, stool tests and breath tests can be used to diagnose H. pylori as the cause.

So how might manuka honey help H. pylori?

University of Auckland senior researcher Dr Fiona Radcliff undertook two laboratory studies using BEE+ Manuka Honey to investigate its effects on the growth of H. pylori. The results were clear, the higher the UMF the more likely it was to inhibit growth and kill the bacteria in liquid cultures. The honey rated UMF® 25+ had four times the ability to inhibit H. pylori growth and kill the bacteria as the honey rated UMF® 5+ said Dr Radcliff. There was also a significant difference between UMF®-rated manuka honey than supermarket brands. – Womens Health

According to Dr. Radcliff, manuka honey can kill H. pylori, and the higher the UMF grade, the more effective the manuka honey will be.

Is Manuka Honey Good For Gastritis And Gastric Ulcers

Gastritis is a general term for a group of conditions with one thing in common: inflammation of the lining of the stomach. The inflammation of gastritis is most often the result of infection with the same bacterium that causes most stomach ulcers. Regular use of certain pain relievers and drinking too much alcohol also can contribute to gastritis. – Mayo Clinic

If youre starting to think these stomach problems all sound the same, youre probably not the only one. Remember our friend, H. pylori? Yes, gastritis and gastric ulcers are commonly caused by the bacteria H. pylori.

But thats not all – they can also be the result of excessive alcohol consumption, using pain medication for an extended period, and infections and stress.

Unfortunately, gastric ulcers are prevalent worldwide with no effective treatment. Its widely recommended to focus on diet: feeding the body helpful substances, and cutting down accelerants.

Anti-inflammatory foods and probiotics like yoghurt and kombucha are known to have positive effects on gastritis.

Theres also been research into whether the antibacterial properties in manuka honey that generally help fight infection can be effective in treating gastritis. Heres an excerpt from one such study:

Manuka honey has also been considered as a treatment for gastroenteritis, which is again, inflammation of the stomach lining, this time causing diarrhoea.

Do The Probiotics In Kombucha Boost Your Gut Health

Probiotics are beneficial microbes that may help prevent and/or treat a variety of health conditions, such as antibiotic-associated diarrhea and ulcerative colitis.

However, the FDA has not approved any probiotics and many questions remain regarding them, including which are most helpful, what amount likely promotes better health and who benefits most?

So, while kombucha does contain live, beneficial bacteria and yeast, whether these microbes actually do anything for you remains to be seen.

Whats more is that the probiotic composition of kombucha can vary significantly, meaning it may be hard for kombucha manufacturers to ever truly know how their product, specifically, may impact a persons health.

Manuka Honey Has Antibacterial Effect

How to treat ulcerative colitis through Ayurveda? – Dr. Mini Nair

Manuka honey is known to have a broad spectrum antibiotic action due to the presence of a compound called methyglyoxal.

As colitis is also very commonly caused by infectious bacteria, manuka honey becomes a viable option for the treatment of the disease due to the antibacterial effect mentioned.

There have been studies that look into the effect of manuka honey on the bacteria that cause colitis. These are Escherichia coli and Clostridium difficile.

A study published in September 2014 studied the effect of manuka honey on Clostridium difficile . During the course of the study, the manuka honey was incubated with three different strains of C. difficile.

The effect seen was that manuka honey had a bactericidal action on the bacteria and caused a significant decrease in the population of the bacteria in the biofilms. This proves that manuka honey can be used to treat infectious colitis.

Another similar study around the same time in 2014 looked into the effect of manuka honey on another bacteria called E. coli .

The action of manuka honey was closely studied, and the result of the study suggested the potential use of manuka honey as a home remedy for colitis.

What it means?Manuka honey is known to be effective against bacteria that are commonly responsible for the development of colitis. Studies confirm that manuka honey stops the growth of two bacteria Clostridium difficileand Escherichia coli that are very commonly responsible for colitis.
