If you have Crohns or ulcerative colitis, vitamin and mineral supplements may be recommended, especially if you are at risk for nutritional deficiencies. Deficiencies can be caused by certain medications, surgeries, or active inflammation from IBD, which can affect your bodys ability to absorb certain vitamins and minerals.

For many with IBD, eating a healthy diet rich in foods with vitamins and minerals may be all that you need. However, some patients may have trouble absorbing enough vitamins and minerals from food alone.

    Using Essential Oils For Inflammation

There are a few different ways to use essential oils for inflammation, including:

    • Bath: Add a few drops of your preferred essential oil to your bathwater to enjoy the aroma and potential health benefits.
    • Diffusion: A diffuser dispenses a mist of essential oil particles into the air, and inhaling the scent may help reduce some UC symptoms. If you dont have a diffuser, you can dilute the essential oil in water in a spray bottle and spritz the oil onto your linens or into the air in your home.
    • Massage: Dilute essential oils with a carrier oil and apply it directly to the affected area. Gently massage the essential oil/carrier oil combination onto your stomach, for example, to help reduce abdominal cramping and pain.

Most essential oils should not be swallowed, but dietary supplements can be consumed in capsule form. Be sure to speak with your healthcare provider before adding essential oils or any herbs to your treatment plan.

Home Remedies To Treat Ulcerative Colitis Naturally

Do you know that there are natural remedies that can help to treat ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic intestinal disease that continuously affects the colon by causing damage to its inner lining.

Its exact cause is unknown, but it is often related to genetic factors, alterations in the microbial flora and increased intestinal permeability.

It can be confused with an episode of common diarrhea, since in some cases they occur together. However, due to the inflammation of the colon, colitis tends to manifest itself with other symptoms.

In turn, there may be bleeding and small sores on the internal walls of the intestine, which triggers severe abdominal pain, swelling and blood or pus in the stool.

Although its treatment is mainly based on modifying the diet, some natural remedies that control the symptoms can also be taken into account.

    Powerful Teas That Fight Inflammation

Due to their anti-inflammatory properties, certain plants may relieve pain thats caused by inflammation.

Plants, herbs, and spices have been used medicinally for centuries.

They contain powerful plant compounds or phytochemicals that can prevent oxidative damage to your cells and reduce inflammation.

Drinking tea made from these plants, herbs, and spices is an easy way to enjoy their benefits.

Green tea comes from the same shrub as black tea, but the leaves are processed differently, allowing them to retain their green color.

The health-promoting compounds in green tea are called polyphenols, of which epigallocatechin-3-gallate is the most potent .

EGCG has anti-inflammatory properties that can help relieve some of the flare-ups associated with inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis .

In a 56-day study in people with ulcerative colitis who didnt respond to conventional medication, treatment with an EGCG-based medication improved symptoms by 58.3%, compared with no improvements in the placebo group .

Green tea also seems to reduce inflammation-driven conditions like heart disease, Alzheimers, and even certain cancers .

To brew green tea, steep a tea bag or loose tea leaves in a tea infuser for five minutes. Matcha powder is finely ground green tea leaves, and you can simply stir a spoonful into hot water or milk.

If you want to give green tea a try, you can find it locally or online. Matcha powder is widely available as well.

    Note About Dietary Supplements

These products can be marketed without approval from the FDA, unless they are made using a new dietary ingredient. That means manufacturers claims about effectiveness are largely unproven. The FDA does regulate dietary supplements to prevent adulterated or misbranded products. Claims on the label that the product is safe and effective may not be entirely accurate.

It is possible for supplements to be misrepresented, contaminated, or degraded. Regulation of natural supplements is much more relaxed as compared to prescription medication, which is subject to rigorous testing. The FDA requires proof that prescriptions are both safe and effective for the condition they are intended to treat before it will give approval.

You should not stop taking your prescribed medication, even if you are using supplements to help manage your Crohns disease or ulcerative colitis symptoms. Always talk with your provider before starting any supplement regimen.

    Dss Induced Colitis Mice Model

Male BALB/c mice were purchased from the Experimental Animal Center, Second Military Medical University and were maintained under a 12 h light-dark cycle at a temperature of 24°C. After adapting to the environment, 32 mice were divided into four groups. All animal experiments were conducted according to the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals published by the National Institutes of Health, and the study protocol was approved by the Animal Care and Use Committee of the Shanghai University. The DSS-induced colitis mice model were established as previously described . Briefly, BALB/c mice were administered 2.5% DSS for 7 days, Weighing body weight and monitoring disease action index daily.

After acclimatization for 3 days, mice were randomly divided into four groups as follows: 1) the control group, fed with standard rodent food and water, without any other treatment 2) the model group provided free access to 2.5% DSS, and orally administered normal saline at 100 L/20 g daily 3) provided free access to 2.5% DSS and orally administered SASP at 400 mg/kg daily 4) provided free access to 2.5% DSS and orally administered ginger at 500 mg/kg daily. The dose of ginger was determined according to the method by Teng et al. , because we had used the same ginger. Body weight and DAI were noted daily.

Be Careful About Your Teas Quality And Quantity

While teas can help fight inflammation and provide various other health benefits, there are some concerns to consider.

Some tea plants are treated with pesticides and herbicides, so try to choose high-quality, organic or pesticide-free varieties.

A study on pesticides in tea imported from China found residues in 198 of 223 samples. In fact, 39 had residues that were over the European Unions maximum limits .

In addition, teas should be stored in an airtight container in a dark, dry place. If not stored properly, they can harbor mycotoxins, a harmful byproduct from a fungus that can grow on some foods and has been found in tea .

Finally, some teas may interact with medications, supplements, or herbs if you drink a lot of it. Consult your healthcare practitioner if you have concerns about possible interactions (

Gut Microbiome Disorder Contributed To Metabolic Dysfunction

As shown in Figure 6A, Wilcoxon analysis was used, and we eventually found that changes in the intestinal flora in different groups showed a close relationship with human physiological function. The most prominent function focused on human disease, organismal systems, genetic information processing, metabolism, and cellular processes. KruskalWallis analysis using the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database identified 30 pathways based on different flora . The predictions revealed that most pathways involved were related to metabolism, including the metabolism of starch, sucrose , and amino acids , as well as genetic information processing . Clusters of Orthologous Groups of proteins is a database of the NCBI. COG is categorized into two: prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Prokaryotes are generally called COG databases. In this research, cluster analysis of difference results was performed based on COG databases, and the heatmap in Figure 6C shows the top 30 COG related to different species in the four groups. We also generated a bar blot, as shown in Figure 6D, to predict the potential functions microbiomes possess. However, we only found two functions, carbohydrate transport and metabolism and transcription, slightly related to their microbiology.

Cellular/molecular/systemic Effects Of Described Plant Preparations

Struggling with leaky gut or ulcerative colitis. These gut ...

A lot of clinical and especially experimental work has suggested that, individual chemical substances derived from the described plants and herbals may have antibacterial, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and immunoreguratory properties. For example curcumin has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic, hypocholesterolemic, antibacterial, wound-healing, antispasmodic, anticoagulant, antitumor and hepatoprotective activities . Boswellia serrata has significant immunoregulatory properties. Boswellic acids reduces the levels of TNF- by suppressing the biosynthesis of leukotrienes via inhibition of 5-lipoxygenase . The extracts of wormwood could reduce TNF- and other proinflammatory cytokines. Andrographis paniculata inhibits in vitro the production of TNF-, IL-1 and nuclear factor-B. Moreover, the polysaccharide content of herbal and plant preparations suggests that they might also have prebiotic properties. Other herbal preparations such as GBF have prebiotic characteristics that could increase luminal butyrate production by modulating the microfloral distribution .

However, we must bear in mind that the results obtained from in vitro studies of an herbal preparation are not equally effective in vivo. This is because many factors including the amount of the active substance contained in the extract as well as interactions between individual constituents could interfere with the results obtained in IBD patients.

    What Is Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative Colitis is a form of irritable bowel disease that targets the end of the large intestine, most notably the rectum and anus. With significant inflammation of the innermost layer of gut tissue, UC causes bloody stools, abdominal pain, weight loss, fever, dehydration, and frequent urges to have a bowel movement.

Some UC bowel movements are false urges this means that although the need to pass stool feels urgent, very little is passed into the toilet bowl. Inflammation is the main culprit in these false urges.

There will be periods of time where UC sufferers will be in symptom remission their bowel movements will improve along with their quality of life, but the tissue in their colon will still be inflamed. Stress and diet triggers will often cause relapses for people with UC.

Complications of UC include anemia and colorectal cancer. Relapses are frequent, so doctors and patients must work together to reduce inflammation and pain and to improve quality of life.

Medications, nutritional supplements, herbs, diet, and surgery are all useful tools for individual cases of UC. Unfortunately, no cure exists, but with the proper diet and lifestyle choices, the risk of UC relapse can be reduced.
