What You Should Know About Mouth Ulcers

Do you usually develop round sores, a swollen skin around the mouth, or feel severe pain when chewing hot, salty or sour foods, or feel irritation while brushing? According to health experts, you could be troubled by mouth ulcers.

Mouth ulcers are a condition whereby the cells and tissues of the mouth are damaged leading the mouth to develop a wound. These ulcers are small, painful injuries or wounds that develop in the mouth or at the bottom of the gums. They make drinking and eating cumbersome due to the pain they cause, says Private Kamanzi, a dietician at Amazon Wellness Centre, Remera, Gasabo District.

Causes

Kamanzi says some of the causes are dietary factors like over dependency on alcohol and tobacco since they contain nicotine which absorbs the water in the mouth, hence leaving it dry, thus leading to sores in the mouth.

According to Dr Dieudonne Bukaba, a nutrition expert from AVEGA Clinic Remera, mouth ulcers, also called aphthous ulcers or canker sores, can sometimes be caused by certain medical conditions such as viral infections including the cold sore virus, chickenpox, and hand, foot and mouth disease, as well as vitamin B12 or iron deficiency.

Kamanzi adds that lack of vitamins like B1, B2, B6 or B9 is a cause of mouth ulcers because this causes the tissues of the mouth to lack elasticity.

The dietician says that nutrition-related disorders like type 1 and 2 diabetes or gestational diabetes are a cause of mouth ulceration.

What Are The Signs

Vitamin B12 deficiency

The symptoms of mouth cancer can be difficult to spot, especially since some are easily mistaken for a relatively minor problem such as mouth ulcers. Mouth ulcers that are caused by mouth cancer tend to be long lasting and not healing, and usually appear on or under the tongue .Apart from mouth ulcers, the most common signs to look out for include the following:

  • A lump in your mouth

  • A white or red patch on the gums, tongue or lining of the mouth

  • Difficulty swallowing, chewing or moving the jaw or tongue

  • Numbness of the tongue, lips or areas of the mouth

  • A feeling that something is caught in your throat

  • Chronic sore throat or hoarseness

  • Swelling of the jaw that makes dentures uncomfortable or ill-fitting

  • Neck swelling

Vitamin B And Canker Sores

If you suspect you are low on your B vitamins, your doctor may prescribe a nutritional supplement for folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12 and/or zinc, says the Mayo Clinic. Taking vitamin B complex for ulcers may help, based on a few recent studies regarding vitamin B and canker sores.

The journal Pain Management Nursing, the official journal of the American Society of Pain Management Nurses, chronicled a small study of 44 people in its June 2015 issue. Researchers gave half the group vitamin B12 ointment for two days, and found statistically significant differences in pain levels after those two days.

Vitamin B injections were the subject of a study in the December 2017 issue of the Journal of Skin and Stem Cell. The study followed 60 patients who suffer from recurrent mouth sores. Half were given injections of vitamins B1, B6 and B12 for eight weeks. The other half were given chewable vitamin tablets composed of iron, folic acid, vitamin B complex and vitamin C.

All patients were treated for eight weeks and followed for 10 months. At the end of 10 months, the patients getting the injections of vitamin B had significantly fewer recurring lesions than those taking the vitamins by mouth. The authors also said many older studies, dating as far back as 1975, have found nutritional deficiencies in patients with mouth sores.

Data Extraction And Quality Assessment

Based on the screening criteria, two investigators independently screened titles and abstracts and, if necessary, read full-text. They also independently completed data extraction and quality assessment. Any disagreement between the investigators was resolved through discussion with a third reviewer.

The inclusion criteria for participants were as follows: patients with a definite clinical diagnosis of mouth ulcers patients who voluntarily read and signed the informed consent patients with high compliance with clinical studies who were not easily lost to follow-up. The exclusion criteria of participants were as follows: patients with mouth ulcers caused by other clinical treatments or diseases patients with hematopoietic and coagulation disorders patients with comorbidities such as chronic diseases or underlying diseases patients who were unable to communicate verbally.

The experimental methods included in the study involved random allocation of the participants to the control and treatment groups. The control group received no treatment, while the treatment group received vitamin B alone or vitamin B combined with pantothenic acid.

More severe or persistent cases of canker sores need to be checked by a doctor to rule out associated conditions or to access prescription treatments. Again, any treatments aimed at the ulcers themselves are not certain to change their course, but can ease the symptoms.

Antibiotics may be prescribed to minimize inflammatory irritation whether or not a bacterial infection is present.

Anesthetics, as well as being available in consumer products for canker sores, may also be prescribed as topical preparations to ease irritation and pain.

Some medicines designed for other conditions can sometimes be used. scientists cite an association between recurrent cases of canker sores and an overactive immune system, so topical immunosuppressant medications may help, such as locally applied cortisone. With a similar mode of action, topical corticosteroids are often considered by doctors these include clobetasol ointment, dexamethasone rinse, and fluocinonide gel . One possible side effect of using corticosteroids against canker sores is a fungal infection in the mouth.

Particularly severe or recurrent cases of canker sores may be referred to an oral specialist who might consider systemic rather than locally applied drugs. These specialists may also be needed to make a more specific diagnosis some rare cases of recurrent canker sores are diagnosed as Sutton disease, for example.

How Does Lysine Work For Canker Sores

How can one treat Oral ulcers? – Dr. Arundati Krishnaraj

It is thought that canker sores may be triggered by a lysine deficiency. People have found that taking lysine does help control canker sores when they are unable to get enough through their diet. Also, people who take the amino acid, arginine, may have lower levels of lysine. Arginine supplementation can reduce lysine in the body.

While the cause of canker sores is still not completely known, they may be caused by a virus or other imbalances in the body. Here is how Lysine for canker sores helps:

Lysine is an essential amino acid that is one of the “building blocks” of protein. It helps produce and put the collagen in your body. Your tissues all have collagen and when you have an injury or sore, lysine may help bring all the things together that the tissue needs to heal. Lysine also functions to keep the enzymes away from injured tissues that continue to break down the collagen. Lysine may also give your immune system a boost to help your body heal damaged tissues.

Recommendations for Use

As soon as you notice a canker sore, begin taking 1,000 mg three times daily with each meal. After the canker sore goes away, continue to take 500 mg three times daily with meals for a week.

  • Avoid lysine while taking antibiotics like neomycin, streptomycin, and gentamycin. Keep dosage less than 10 grams daily to prevent toxic levels of the antibiotics in your bloodstream.
  • Lysine may cause side-effects such as diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping.
